Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

The planet Zakaria, thirteen years ago.

Rebecka Liedeberg was, like many ten year old girls, pretty, energetic, and full of life. Or rather, she had used to be, until her mother had dragged her from her happy home of Routh to practically the other side of the planet. A new state, a new town. A new school. New friends. Or not, as the case might be.

Pretty, energetic and full of life Rebecka may have been, but she was also studious and smart, and in the classrooms and playgrounds of Setora Junior High, being studious and smart was an open invitation to ostracisation and bullying. The pack of pre-teen bitches were waiting for Rebecka, as they had been almost every day since she'd first moved and made the critical mistake of putting her hand up to answer the teacher's question in class, as she left the school. There were seven of them in all, clearly an unfair number, but then girls like Theresa Patts never did care for fairness. Or girls who were studious and smart.

Well, if it isn't the brainbox, Theresa mocked as Rebecka came into view. The other girls laughed hysterically, like a pack of demented hyenas. Rebecka tried to keep walking, but the girls blocked her way. Rebecka knew what was coming; she'd endured the beating for almost three weeks now. Please leave me alone, she whimpered, hating the sound of her own voice even as she did so.

Please leave me alone, Theresa mocked mockingly. The other girls again reacted with hysteria far from befitting the little wit in Theresa's words.

Why are you doing this to me? Rebecka demanded.

Cos we don't like you, Theresa told her bluntly.

What the hell did I ever do to you?! Rebecka flared.

You made me look at your butt-ugly face every day, Theresa sniped. Isn't that enough? Rebecka tried to push past her, but Theresa and one of her friends grabbed her by the arms and threw her to the floor. You go when I say you can go, you uppity little bitch, Theresa snarled. And not until. First, we're gonna have a little fun.

    Rebecka stared at her fearfully.

Is this the school welcoming committee? a new voice broke into the conversation. Theresa and her pack of bitches turned. 'Cause if so, it kinda blows. It was a young girl, about the same age as Rebecka and the others, with long blonde hair and a
