CHAPTER 1

Elizabeth Bennet let out an extended sigh of relief as her coach came to a stop in front of her cousin’s London home. Trevor Vernon was a distant cousin on her mother’s side, but his family had always been good company, and he welcomed Elizabeth to his home with open arms. While she did not provide him with every detail of her need for escape, when she wrote and asked if she could visit him, he did not hesitate to invite her to London. Now that she was at the Vernon home, she felt as if she could breathe for the first time in a month or more.

The noise and bustle on the streets was interrupted by the sound of the coach driver retrieving Elizabeth’s trunks. When he opened the door to assist her as she stepped out, she realized it had been some time since she spoke to anyone. She felt a bit out of practice.

Thank you for ensuring my safe travel from Meryton. Will you be my driver for the return home in three days?

He tipped his hat and nodded.

That I will, miss. Mr. Joseph Daniels, at your service. If you are in need of my driving before the end of your stay, I will be staying at The Village Tavern. It is a coaching inn just up the road. If I do not hear from you before, I will be here at 7am on Monday morning.

Elizabeth smiled gratefully as she followed the driver up to Trevor’s door, the man dragging her trunk behind him. She only had to knock on the
