Description
Today we're chatting with morning news anchor and media personality Joelle Tomlinson about her journey into journalism, the identity struggle she had growing up biracial in Saskatchewan to adoptive white parents. What it's been like navigating the grief and trauma of losing her brother to an accidental drug overdose, and how she has unpacked her grief and grown because of it.
We dive into how her journalism career started as a scrappy teenager vying to get published (and how that led to her first on air job!), navigating the many NO's to find the one YES, and the career opportunities that have surprised her. She speaks vulnerably about the challenges and abuse she faces as a bi-racial woman in the media industry, how she protects her energy and handles it with grace, the line she treads with tokenism in her work and the importance of mentorship in the workplace.
PLUS: Why running is therapy for her, how it has supported her healing, and the vulnerability it takes to run Ultra marathons. Why she ISN'T a long term goal setter and how it has opened her up to opportunity, the value of making mistakes and stepping outside her comfort zone, how she found and created community in a new city, and beauty of making new friends as an adult.
