    The Story briefly:

Susmitha, a twenty two years aged psychology student, who was trying to get doctorate in criminal psychology has been allotted with a criminal Mangolitha Esthamavo whom she has to meet and study in jail, submit a paper on him and attend a vivo also on that as a final phase in getting her doctorate. But she learnt that criminal has not been talking with anyone and was strictly limited only to his routine for a long time, she was very much disappointed but decided to meet him and try her level best. When she met that criminal in the jail and pleaded with him to cooperate and interact with her to study him to get her doctorate, he agreed the same but asked her to do a favour to that. That favour was; she has to meet a woman Suvenia in a village in the corner of the country and tell her the sentence ‘this is the flower blossomed in a different place’. What happened when Susmitha met that woman and told that sentence was the story of this novel ‘Flower of the Mist’.

    The story starts from here;

Oh,Susmitha I am just waiting for you. Here is a great news I have to tell you. As soon as Susmitha slumped in the chair opposite to her guide Mahitha, she said looking into Susmitha’s face. You have been allotted with a criminal to do your assessment and study.

Susmitha could not believe that and her face became wide with happiness. She has been doing doctorate in criminal psychology along with her post-graduation in psychology, she completed everything in that except only one thing! That was assessment of a criminal by spending some considerable time with him, write a paper on that and attending a vivo. It was the department of psychology which allot a criminal to every student who were pursuing doctorate in criminology whom they have to assess and rest was the same. To get that opportunity they have to apply in a separate application and it would take minimum three months and maximum six months to be allotted with a criminal. Susmitha has applied for the allotment of a criminal to do the final part of her work to get her doctorate just one week back! How this type of wonderful thing has happened in this less span of time she could not understand.

I cannot believe it at all! How I have been allotted a criminal this fast? with happiness in her face Susmitha exclaimed. I know this takes minimum three months. There are students who have not been allotted with a criminal even after six months also.

You are indeed lucky Susmitha. You have got the allotment of criminal just in one week. Are you sure your dad did not influence anyone in the department?

Never with firmness Susmitha said. First thing he does not like my taking doctorate in criminal psychology and to that matter he did not like my pursuing that course itself. Next thing he never likes influencing, bribing etcetera.

Alright then. With a smile on her lips Mahitha leaned back in the chair. Now your getting the doctorate depends on how better you can assess that criminal, interview him and write your paper.

And do the vivo. A smile crept onto the lips of Mahitha also, she stooped forward and balanced her both arms on the table in between them both. I am curious to know who that lucky person to spend time with me is. Tell me who he is?

Here lies something typical! Mahitha sighed heavily.

Don’t maintain suspense and please tell me. I know the implications in this matter and I am ready for them.

Spending time with criminals to assess them was not going to be a happy experience to the students pursuing doctorate especially when they were girls. There were instances when some criminals attempted rapes also on them. But Susmitha was very much want to know that person whom she has to study.

Mangolitha Esthamavo. Did you ever hear that name? Mahitha knitted her brows together.

Mangolitha.....It did not sound to me that I ever have heard it before. Susmitha leaned back in her chair with gathered frowns.

He belonged to the people called as Esthamavos. A long time back these Esthamavos were notorious robbers, I don’t know how it has happened but government allotted them huge land at the corner of our country and they started living there and they named it as Kasarra, after their goddess Kasarra. I don’t want to tell all about those Esthamavos now but briefly your hero involved in a crime nearly twenty two years or so back in which more than ten people were murdered. Nearly six or so people were murdered by Esthamavos at that time all the culprits who murdered those people were also killed in police firing except your hero. After being jailed this man has spending time in the jail and him you are going to study for your doctorate. Mahitha paused for a second.

Still you did not tell me what is the problem in my studying him. All the criminal more or less do such crimes and come to the jail. With irritation in her face Susmitha said.

For a long time he has not been talking anything with anyone just spending time in his routine.

But not an attacking or violent type.

No, not that type. So far what I have learnt he is not talking anything with anyone but spending time all alone. It is somehow difficult to study him if he has such an attitude.

If it is so why he has been allotted to me? Is it is not better not allowing any criminal? I can wait any long but I want to do this part in a satisfactory way. Susmitha’s voice and face were with full of irritation.

Sometimes these types of criminals also will be allotted and that is not a strange thing! Panel board consider the nature of the criminals also and if they are this type they don’t would be too strict in giving the doctorate. I want you to go and finish this necessary part to get your doctorate. Mahitha suggested.

But I want to do this in the best way, to my satisfaction but not just for namesake.

You can disagree to this and apply for another criminal allotment. But I cannot say how long it will take.

Susmitha took her lower lip between her teeth frames, leaned back in the chair with gathered frowns. In that posture even to a woman Mahitha also she was appearing so much beautiful.

The greatness of a student lies in assessing such type of a criminal. Who knows if a beautiful girl like you approaches him, he also open his mouth and cooperate.

On hearing that Susmitha in that irritation also Susmitha laughed and her laughter was mellifluous.

Just in two days’ time you have to say whether it is agreeable to you or not. If it is agreeable to you, in one week or so you will be specified the time by the department when you have to spend your time with that time and it will be not less than seven hours. Think carefully and tell your answer without much delay.

I will do so. Susmitha said and got off from the chair she sat. I discuss this matter with my parents and then tell you my decision.

FIRST I NEVER WANTED you to study that criminal psychology and aspire for doctorate in it. You can take your doctorate in any other thing also if you want. Susmitha’s father Vykhunta Rao said angrily.

You yourself suggested me to study psychology. In an accusing tone Susmitha said.

I did not ask you to study criminal psychology for your doctorate. Now you have to meet a criminal, that too a criminal like him, for that purpose. Vykhunta Rao was still angry.

That conversation was going on like that for half an hour or so from the moment Susmitha told her father about the allotment of Mangolitha Esthamavo for her study purpose. She told about him also and expected this type of response from him. They both sat side by side in the sofa in their house.

All criminals are almost like that dad. We cannot expect them to do holy things and come to the jail. Susmitha said with an irritating expression. There is already a problem in this. You please don’t further discourage me by talking like this.

What is it? looking into her face Vykhunta Rao knitted his brows.

This rascal has not been talking with anyone for a long time strictly limited only to his routine. Before sending her students to the criminal to study, our guide Mahitha do some research on them also. Why such criminal has been allotted to me I cannot understand! How can I do any assessment on such criminal and write my paper for the doctorate?

Is this thing not just a formality? Should everyone qualify in this to get his or her doctorate?

Yes, it is not just a formality and everyone should be qualified in it. I have to get good marks in the paper which I write after spending my time with this criminal and there will be a vivo also on the same and in that also I should satisfy the interviewers. Then only I can get my doctorate in criminal psychology.

Vykhunta Rao remained silent as he did not know what to say.

If I fail in it, I have to make an application again for this and the usual minimum time that will be taken to be allotted with a criminal for this purpose is three months! I just don’t know whether to feel happy or sorrow that I have been allotted with a criminal just in one week but this type of person!

But I am certainly not happy for your spending time with a criminal. Once again there was dislike in the face of Vykhunta Rao.

He is not even talking with anyone for what you need to feel fear in this? For one thing you can feel so happy. As he has been dormant only with minimum response for a long time either you....... Just by then her mother Malliswari came there with coffee cups in a tray and taking one of them from the tray and looking into her mother’s face Susmitha said. ......or mom need to worry about whether that criminal may do harm to me.

I think that there is still time to you to be allotted with a criminal for your doctorate purpose? slumping herself on the right side of her daughter in the sofa with the tray in her hand and looking into her face Malliswari asked.

Your dearest daughter has been given the opportunity to do that just in one week of her applying for it. That means, she has been allotted with a notorious criminal for doing her study, writing her paper to submit and get the doctorate. Vykhunta Rao said.

Is it is so? This early? suddenly there was anxiousness in the face of Malliswari. And this criminal is notorious?

Yes, this criminal is notorious but less dangerous comparing with other criminals. He is very much dormant and has not been talking with anyone for a long time. Looking into her mother’s face Susmitha said.

So you have been told in detail about him already. There was a questioning expression in Malliswari’s face. Tell me about him and the rest.

Not very much mom. Then Susmitha told her mother as much as she came to know about Mangolitha Esthamavo.

I don’t think I heard this name at any time before. Malliswari said.

To hear such names we are not in police department or in criminal law profession or researching like our daughter in criminal psychology. Vyhkhunta Rao laughed and said. But as per our daughter’s information he was involved in a crime more than twenty years back in which more than ten people were dead.

My god! fear filled the face of Malliswari. More than ten people were murdered!

Mom, he did not all alone killed those ten people or so. He was just one of a gang and the rest of the culprits except this person were killed in police fire. We really did not know what type of circumstances led to that massacre and....... She paused for a second trying to control her irritation. .......because of that he has been in jail for the last twenty years or so. A person does not be called as a criminal and is put in jail unless he does crimes.

Anyhow our girl has been allotted with that criminal for her research purpose. She has to spend a whole day........ Vykhunta Rao tried to say.

......not whole day dad, some seven hours or so. Interrupting him Susmitha said.

That much of time is more than enough to get damage at a dangerous criminal. Malliswari said and the fear in her face was just the same.

Mom, I already said. For the last several years he has not been talking with anyone quite dormant and mild. Sighing heavily Susmitha said. My present problem is how to make him to interact with me.

Who knows? He suddenly becomes active meeting someone from outside especially a girl like you. I really don’t like you going and meeting with him.

Mom, I would not be alone there. There shall certainly be assistance if I want. And to that matter any criminal is dangerous. If I forsake him, I may be allotted with even more dangerous criminal who knows?

Malliswari was about to say something more but before that Susmitha said again. Spending time with a criminal is must to me to get my doctorate and I should get it under any circumstances. So don’t try to say anything more negative and lessen your fear. Indeed there is no need to feel fear at all.

But dear what is the use in your meeting such a criminal if he has not been even talking with anyone for such a long time? What study you can do on him? Vykhunta Rao asked her.

I really cannot answer this question dad. With a helpless expression in her face Susmitha said.
