About this ebook

Many want to serve the Lord in the gospel but are ignorant of the standards of God for those who would qualify as labourers in the gospel.

The author shows from the scriptures who is qualified, the characteristics of the qualified and examples of those who qualified to serve the Lord.

In this book, you will discover the qualifications which revolutionize the disciple's service to God in the gospel and also the flaws he must avoid in order to be a qualified workman who serves God and man in this generation.

We send this book out with the prayer that the Lord would be pleased to use it to grant His children a better understanding of His service and instruct them on how to qualify to serve Him in the gospel enterprise.

May God bless you richly as you read.

Qualifications For Serving in The Gospel - Zacharias Tanee Fomum

THE QUALIFICATIONS TO SERVE IN THE GOSPEL—1

    The Apostle Paul writes:

Paul, and Timothy, slaves of Jesus Christ. To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi (Philippians 1: 1a, HCSB).

    1

    A NEW KIND OF SLAVERY

Paul and Timothy qualified to serve. They qualified to be slaves of the Lord Jesus Christ. First of all, they were slaves because the Lord Jesus had purchased them back from Satan. Can you imagine a slave market scene with slaves bound in chains, under the yoke of the slave master? That is what we were. Can you also imagine a noble who comes to that market and is rich, fabulously rich, and he buys the slaves. As he buys them, he takes off the chains and the slaves are free. Then he tells the slaves, Go, you are free. Then one slave says, No, I am not going, I am coming with you, I am coming with you to serve you out of gratitude.

The slave has now changed Masters. He remains a slave; he is a slave now by personal choice; the slave of the one who liberated him. It is a new kind of slavery, a voluntary slavery to the Redeemer-Master.

    2

    A SLAVE BY PERSONAL CHOICE

The thought of what is recorded in Exodus 21:1-6 came to my mind as I was thinking about that. There the Bible says:

Now these are the ordinances which you shall set before them. When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing.

If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for life.

So the slave was bought. He had served six years. He was free to go. He could go free or he could say, I love my master, I will not go.

This is now personal choice, – constrained by the love he had for his master, isn’t it so? I love my master, I will not go.

When he says that, not under duress, not being forced, but motivated by the love he has for his master, then the master brings him to God and the master brings him to the door or the doorpost. Then his master bores his ear through with an awl and he serves his master for life.

Permanent slavery. Permanent slavery by choice, for life. I love my master….

    3

A MISSION FOR THE REDEEMED AND CONQUERED SLAVE

Paul was free but on the Damascus road he was purchased. He was free from Jesus but bound by Satan. And on the Damascus road he was purchased. Not only purchased, he was conquered. He surrendered and he asked,

… ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand upon your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you to serve and bear witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles—to whom I send you to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me’ (Acts 26:15 -18).

    4

A UNIQUE VISION FOR THE SERVANT AND HIS HELPER

Timothy was chosen by Paul to become his co-worker, his helper. Timothy needed no further revelation. Paul had received it for both of them. Timothy just fitted in and obeyed, and Paul’s task and
