About this ebook

This book is an expository study of spiritual leadership.

The author, Z.T. Fomum, taught extensively on leadership—training thousands of spiritual leaders across the world—being himself the leader of a growing missionary movement currently established in over 140 countries.

The content of the book is not theological discussions, but words from a heart to hearts. Several leaders have become experts in the presence of men in the guise of the ministry they render. But God's plan was that the leader be His companion—a man of His presence. The Lord Jesus established leaders first to be with HIM and then serve Him from a position of overflow. The entire life and ministry of the leader depend on it.

The author elaborates on two schools of leadership—the home and the workplace—where one is moulded to provide the model of a God-approved heart for others to imitate.

This book will not leave you indifferent. Read it and may God transform you into a leader of His presence.

    PREFACE

This book titled, The Leader and his God is a compilation of messages taught to Christian leaders in Yaounde (Cameroon), Lomé (Togo) and Libreville (Gabon). This is about the crucial need for the Christian leader to enter into and maintain a growing relationship with his God, from which overflows his ministry. The messages herein produced are from cassette recordings and notes taken during these leadership meetings; they are not theological discussions, but words from a heart to hearts.

We send this book out with prayer that it may please God to use it to transform the lives of His children who hold leadership responsibilities at different levels. May God bless you and speak to you as you read.

HIGHLIGHTS ON THE LEADER AND HIS GOD

The first thing God wants from a spiritual leader is companionship with Him. Spiritual leadership is not a call to run after the people, but a call to run after God and fellowship with Him. The leader must, first of all, be God’s companion.

God seeks for lovers and worshippers.

The lover lives to satisfy the needs of the Beloved by his being and by his presence.

The Lord Jesus appointed the twelve disciples so that they might be with Him (Mark 3:14).

The Lord Jesus appointed the twelve disciples so that they might know Him and put Him on.

He appointed the twelve disciples so that by knowing Him and putting Him on, they might go to people and give them Jesus, that is, the Jesus they had known.

The Jesus that you can give to people is the Jesus you have put on—the Jesus in you, the Jesus you know.

A man’s leadership is directly proportional to his Jesus-content: a) No Jesus-content, no leadership; b) Little Jesus-content, little leadership; c) Much Jesus-content, much leadership.

Spiritual leadership is the call to provide a model of a god-approved heart for others to imitate.

Leadership is the flow of a pure heart towards God.

God cannot jump over the type of heart a man has and use him.

A man leads before God by the kind of heart he has.

When you pray, what flows to God is not the words of your prayer; it is your heart—your being that flows to Him.

When you fast, what flows to God is not the absence of food; it is not the number of days you fasted; it is your heart what you are inside, that flows to God.

When you preach, what flows to God is neither your sermon nor your eloquence; rather it is your being—your heart that flows to Him.

When a man’s prayer, fasting, sermons and heart are not one, he is a hypocrite.

Men can appoint a hypocrite to leadership but God will not.

A hypocrite can appoint himself to leadership but God will not.

Truth is the foundation of leadership. If you miss that foundation, your leadership will be counterfeit.

Because a leader will produce his kind, a hypocritical leadership will produce hypocrites.

A spiritual leader is 75% his being, 20% his doing and 5% his possessions. Otherwise said, a spiritual leader is, first of all, his character, and only secondarily his accomplishments, and thirdly his possessions.

There is only one school in which to prepare the leaders of tomorrow: The School of the Development of the Spirit.

John the Baptist went to the desert to develop his spirit—conscience, intuition and communion.

John the Baptist developed his spirit in the loneliness of the desert with only one companion—God. … The word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert (Luke 3:2b).

A man leads to the extent to which his spirit has been developed. To put it otherwise, spiritual leadership is directly proportional to the growth of the leader’s spirit.

A man leads according to the depth, the length, the breadth and the height of his spirit.

Weaknesses in the spirit are weaknesses in a man’s whole relationship with God. Such weaknesses also spell failure in the exercise of spiritual leadership. They produce leadership driven by the soul; leadership controlled by the mind, will and emotions. Soul-driven leadership is not spiritual leadership.

Men look for abilities, God looks at the heart—for a loyal heart.

Vision is received in the presence of God. The vision reaches its maximum through continuous being with God.

Leadership includes the power to take unpopular decisions in conformity to God, and imposing them on God’s people.

Quality in leadership will lead to quantity, but quantity will never lead to quality.

God raises leaders for union with Him.

God raises leaders for intimacy with Him.

God raises leaders for fusion with Him.

When God is satisfied with a man’s heart, He offers him as a gift to the church, to go and produce others whose hearts are as pure as his. These will satisfy the heart of God.

Spiritual leadership is a call to provide a model of a god-approved heart for the people to imitate.

You can gather a crowd of people, however, you might not be their leader if you do not have Jesus, because leadership is the capacity to give Jesus to the people.

The partner-fit for a spiritual leader is a woman with a fully developed spirit. She should be ultra-sensitive, mature, stable and growing in conscience, intuition and communion. When this is the case, she and her husband (the spiritual leader) will have the same sensitivity towards God. Together, they will pursue God, lay hold of Him, possess Him, be transformed into His likeness, intuitively know what is on His heart and instantly know what He wants because of deep union and fellowship with Him.

What God does inside will flow out as ministry. If God has done nothing in your heart, nothing will flow out; you have no ministry. If God has done little in your heart, little will flow out; you have a little ministry. If God has done much in your heart, much will flow out; you have a great ministry. Ministry is the resultant overflow of divine abundance.

When you begin to think that it is your possessions—house, wealth, learning, ... that will determine your ministry, you have missed it all. By being born in a stable and lying in
