    PREFACE

This book, You, Your Team and Your Ministry, is a compilation of the teachings of Professor Zacharias Tanee Fomum addressed to the saints in Yaounde, Cameroon, during a leadership training course. In this book, the author tells us who is qualified to serve God and the importance of a team in a man’s ministry. People whose hearts are divided cannot do anything for God. Total consecration to God and total dependence on God are indispensable for success. A man will fail utterly if he does not have the people that it takes to do and finish the job given him. The first mark of a team member is that he does not oppose the team leader in any way. To disagree and to oppose are two different things. Opposition talks of conflict whereas disagreement is only a matter of differences in opinions. Every leader who does not labour to raise around him other men and women near his rank, has failed. He who has never put in his all to please a human being will never put in his all to please God. The author invites you to cooperate with God so that you will be able to raise around you other men and women who will help you in your ministry.

We recommend this book to you, dear reader, with prayer that the Lord would use it to enable you to build the kind of team that you need to help you accomplish God’s purposes.

    LEADING A TEAM—1

    A. IN SEARCH OF A MAN

    Ineed a man,

a man of God who loves God intensely.

    a humble man.

a man of fasting and prayer.

a man with a servant’s heart but who knows how to exercise authority.

someone who has a standing with God.

a man who loves me and is committed to my family.

a man who has abandoned his personal ambitions. It could also be a woman.

a man who will not need to consult too much before doing things rightly.

a man who shall be available twenty-four hours a day.

a man who will be a confidant because his contribution will affect the whole work.

a man who must be a practical man.

a man who will be my administrative assistant.

Why is it hard to find such a man? The truth is that the one person suited for it in our ministry backslid ten years ago. Seeing that God will not manufacture people overnight, He has to wait.

A man’s choices make or mar him. We advance or frustrate God and His purposes by our choices. God had to wait for thirty more years beyond the planned 400 years of the bondage of the children of Israel, until Moses was ripe for the task.

The Bible says, Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years (Genesis 15:13).

Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years. At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the LORD’s divisions left Egypt (Exodus 12:40‒41).

God had to wait for thirty more years because He did not have the right man. It is a frightful thing. How tragic it is to backslide or to retard one’s growth. Moses was retarded in his growth in dying to self. God can stop something permanently because of one man, and all of history would suffer for it.

    B. THE GOD WHO INITIATES AND MAN’S RESPONSIBILITY

As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. When they arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came upon him in power, and he joined in their prophesying. When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets? A man who lived there answered, And who is their father? So it became a saying: Is Saul also among the prophets? (1 Samuel 10:9‒12)

Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul but he was told, "Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honour and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal (1 Samuel 15:12).

Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the LORD, and the wall around Jerusalem (1 Kings 3:1).

Before Solomon’s encounter with God, he had made an alliance with Egypt. His heart was divided from the very beginning.

Biblical kingship went with an anointing of the Holy Spirit. When someone was demoted from being king, the Holy Spirit also would leave him. When Saul was rejected from being king, we are told, Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him (1 Samuel 16:14). The Holy Spirit left, so an evil spirit came. There is no midway.

When Solomon came to power, the anointing that came with kingship was withheld for evermore afterwards.

It is either God who is the initiator or Satan. God will never take over whatever Satan began. There is no room at all for man’s own will and mind.

You cannot go with a divided heart and do anything for God. You cannot, in the least iota of your flesh, accomplish anything to the satisfaction of God’s heart.

    In the mission field, the
