Fasting is central to any work and to any move of God. We have been burdened for very many years now about fasting, and are labouring to fast ever increasingly. We have been burdened about the centrality of fasting and have laboured to lead individuals into seeing the necessity of fasting, and to actually fast. We have been burdened to lead churches into seeing the necessity of fasting, and into fasting. As I fast alone, and as we travelled and taught on fasting, I took down key thoughts for myself that came through as I fasted alone, as I led others in fasting and as we taught on fasting.

In this book we share with you some of the thoughts that came through between 15th February 1992 and 8th January 2009.

Our prayer is that by God’s grace, you will find in this book some thoughts that will revolutionise and stir your heart to fast and fast and fast. May our God bless you exceedingly.

FASTING TOUCHES THE HEART OF GOD

Ahab said to Elijah, So you have found me, my enemy!

I have found you he answered, because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord. I am going to bring disaster on you. I will consume your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel Slave or free. I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have provoked me to anger and have caused Israel to sin.

And also concerning Jezebel the Lord says: Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. "Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds of the air will feed on those who die in the country.’’ There was never a man like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Ammonites the Lord drove out before Israel.

When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite:’ "Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his days, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.’’

LEADERSHIP AND FASTING

The leader is a person who is given special responsibilities to accomplish by the Lord and he or she knows that, alone he or she will not be able to accomplish what the Lord wants. The leader then mobilizes the people he is leading to work with him so that the special responsibilities that God has given him to accomplish are accomplished to the satisfaction of God’s heart. God may give the leader a responsibility for which the price to pay is one hundred and twenty days of complete fasts. The leader can set to invest the one hundred and twenty days of fasting alone and that will take one year for him to price that God wants. He can also look for hundred and twenty people who will each fast for one day with him and in that way, the price will urgently be paid and God will then be free to do what He wants to do through the leader.

It is better, for the glory of God, for forty people fasting one day and having forty fasting days invested into God’s cause than one person fasting for forty days.

FASTING AND SELF-GLORY

All fasting that is not carried out for the exclusive glory of the Lord Jesus is done for self and all that is done for self is done for the Evil one. So any fast that is carried out for self-exaltation is carried out for the glory of the Devil for he is one who said:

I will ascend to heaven, I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.

FASTING

Short fasts can be invested into the battle to come back to God from the condition or from the heart that is dry from much spiritual labours or for small projects. Long fasts are primarily for warfare with Satan. Because this is so, only those who are filled with the fullness of God should carry out long fasts. The longer the fast is to be the fuller of God, the one who wants to carry the fast should be at the beginning of the fast. Those who carry out long fasts without spiritual abundance are doing themselves much harm and such fasts will produce little spiritual impact. The Lord Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit before he started his forty-day fast (Luke 4:1-2).
