Fomum was an ordinary man who constantly acknowledged his weakness and human frailty, his life and ministry was transformed by the mighty power of the Holy Spirit.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AT WORK

This introductory chapter dwells on the author’s experience of the infilling with the Holy Spirit—how the Lord filled him with the power from on high and the manifestation of this power in and through his life.

MY TESTIMONY

The Holy Spirit came upon me and I became a new man, a different man! Another power began to operate in me on the spot. In many ways I am very ordinary and very weak, but from that day, a power operates in my life that is not mine. God has made the power of another to flow through me, through the books, and even in our scientific research.

On 13 June 1956, at the age of 11, I read a tract which my father gave me, titled, Someone died for you, and I believed in the Lord Jesus Christ after reading it. I became a different man and fell in love with the Bible. I would read the Bible late into the nights. In secondary school, my friends referred to me mockingly as the monk who shook the world. I went with others each week to teach Sunday school children twelve kilometres away.

I was proposed at school for the post of minister of religion but I did not like it; I did not like it. I did not like the one word, Monk which the students had tagged on me. I wanted a more important post in student politics, the post of Minister of Education. A germ—the germ of the love of the glory of the world had got into me in high school. The germ of the love of the glory of the world had entered my heart.

In high school, the germ grew. I attended prayer meetings at 5:00 am daily, but the desire to see Africa liberated from colonialism and neo-colonialism, and the desire for a leader for Africa gripped my heart. We started an Nkrumahist movement in school. I even fasted for three weeks partially when Nkrumah died. Then I went through Nigeria to Sierra Leone. On 1 October 1966, alone in my university room, God placed my life and heart side by side with the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. Before then I did not smoke or drink or run after girls and I always compared myself favourably with other young men. But that day, I put my life side by side with the life of the Lord Jesus: His purity condemned my heart that was rotten with impurity even though I was a physical virgin. It condemned my proud and selfish heart that was ready to use anyone that could be used to attain my ambition to be Secretary General of Africa, the next man after Nkrumah.

Placed side by side with the servant heart of the Lord Jesus, I saw the wickedness of my heart. I left my bed and sat on the floor and I wept in repentance. I promised God that if He would forgive me and change my heart, I would serve Him with my whole heart.

This occurred during the first week in the university and many things changed radically. My heart was ignited with love for the word and the words: I read fifty books by Christian authors that year. I witnessed to any student who cared to listen. I talked endlessly about the Lord. I began to plan for the future and drew up a general constitution for the total evangelization of Cameroon. I often withdrew to a nearby forest and prayed for Cameroon.

Joyce Chaplin addressed us on, Adventures with the pen: a challenge to Christian writing (she is author of a book with the same title). When she finished, I went outside and looking up to the sky I begged God to grant me the privilege to write the gospel.

I became General Secretary of the Christian Union and for my consecration, I went on a fast for four days. It was a complete fast; I fasted much in those days though not for long periods: two days, three days ….

I wanted to tell everyone about the gospel and I wanted a first-class degree. Nothing else was of interest to me at the university. I worked at my studies and I worked at the gospel. My first convert was a Nigerian, Akinola. We had argued about the gospel for many weeks. We argued from 8:00 pm to 3:00 am on the day he surrendered and believed. For three days I could not eat for joy. I was floating in the air; I had brought someone out of death into life.
