Introduction
Hello everyone! I’m Kierra Asnauskas and this is Permission To Pivot: The Power of Self-Awareness
a course from Scribd. Thank you for joining me.
What does the word pivot
mean to you? Is it a word that applies or should apply to your life? Of course, it’s a word that many of us are familiar with, but chances are: it’s not a word that plays a very big part in your vocabulary, right? And that's understandable. In fact, it’s probably the case for most people.
And yet, in my line of work, so many people would describe their situations to me and, as it turns out, a pivot is exactly what they needed in their lives.
Recently, it’s become more and more prevalent for people to talk about pivoting in terms of business and careers. This is great; or, at least, it’s a great start. But the deeper we look, the more likely we are to find that it isn't just in business or our careers that we may be in need of a pivot. When you pivot, you're basically changing direction based on your knowledge of who you are, what you need, and what your potential impact is. I have it on good authority that, for a vast majority of us, if we got to know ourselves a little better, we’d probably find that we need a pivot of some kind.
This points to something that is at the heart of a meaningful pivot and, therefore, at the heart of this course: self-awareness. You cannot make a successful pivot in your life or in your career without first understanding where it is you belong and why whatever you’re doing now isn’t working. For that reason, before we get down in the weeds on pivoting, it's important to address this issue of self-awareness. Because, without it, you will fall into needless traps on your pivoting journey.
Have you ever met someone who, for the life of them, couldn't read a room? I mean someone who's extraordinarily oblivious in ways that are noticeable to seemingly everyone else? Or, perhaps, if we’re being honest, maybe you have been that person. There’s no shame in admitting it. After all: admitting it to yourself is the first and most important act of self-awareness there is.
The truth is: we've all been that person. I’m sure there are many times when we've been the most obnoxious person in the room, but we were simply unable to realize it. That's because we lacked self-awareness.
Sadly, self-awareness is a topic that hardly gets the attention it deserves. It isn’t taught in schools, and it’s even excluded from all kinds of self-help programs. And the reason is simple;
