Introduction
Hello and welcome! I’m Mark Rothman, progress coach, and this is Playing Bigger: How to Rewrite Your Narrative to Live a Bigger, Better Life.
Thanks for joining me!
I love those moments when I see people open up and start living their bigger, better lives -- the kind of life we all want to live! So, I’m grateful that you’ve decided to do that for yourself - at least, that’s what I’m assuming, if you’re checking out this course.
We’re all controlled by the stories we tell ourselves. And too often, those stories keep us small. They prevent us from living that bigger, better life. In this course, I’ll discuss how you can rewrite those stories and free yourself from them using six powerful tools: context, gratitude, faith, terms, ownership, and your relationship to money.
In unit one, we’ll talk about the greatest obstacles to freeing yourself and some of the general strategies you can use immediately to overcome these obstacles.
In unit two, we’ll get into the power of context, faith, and gratitude. These are three of the most important concepts for change when it comes to rewriting your story.
In unit three, we’ll dig into how you can change your terms, ownership, and your relationship to money so that you can find even more freedom.
Along the way, I’ll give you some journaling exercises to unlock your progress and get you started on the path toward liberation.
Now, are these all of the terms and ideas to help you live the life you want? Of course not. This course is meant to be comprehensive, but it can’t include everything. My hope is that this will be a huge step forward for you.
I can tell you from my personal experience, when you engage these terms, when you really work on them and apply these ideas to your life, you will see amazing change.
When I talk about making change, there’s an analogy I like to use. Imagine you’re on a ship leaving from Los Angeles that’s headed to Korea. But imagine that ship is one degree off course when it leaves its port. Where will the ship end up? It’s headed toward Korea - but just one degree off. It’s going to end up somewhere completely different - maybe Tokyo or New Zealand.
If you’re a golfer, you’re probably also familiar with this idea. The head of your club only needs to be angled a little bit off when it strikes the ball to send it in an entirely different direction from the one you intended.
Following that line of logic, we can also make one degree of change for our own good and watch it add up. By taking small steps every day, you’ll soon find yourself in an entirely different place. You’ll find a lot in this course to help you achieve that goal.
But before we get into the course in earnest, let’s talk about the stories we tell ourselves.
For one thing, they’re all true. Whether it’s the short version that you tell at parties or the long version you tell to people you know well, all of these stories are true. It doesn’t matter whether you leave out a few details; you’re telling different versions of the same true story from your life.
All of these stories start with an inner story. What are we telling ourselves in our heads? In a lot of ways, the inner stories are the ones that are the most powerful, the ones that really control us.
Here’s the thing: If you think about it, if you’re really honest with yourself, how true are your inner stories? How often do these stories actually put you in the worst light? How
