About this ebook

Many of us are familiar with the value of stories. They help us relate to and identify with others, incite emotion, and make us feel like we can be more than we are. Humans are hardwired to appreciate stories. But there’s another utility for stories that may not have occurred to you: They can help us in our career hunt. But how?

In Tell Your Story, an audio course from Scribd Coach, career/innovation coach and host of the Deviant Thinking podcast Jennifer Thompson explains precisely how you can tell your story and leverage it as part of your career journey. In the course, she explains what it means to own your story and why it’s important, how to increase the odds of getting a job you’re passionate about with your story by your side, and, finally, how to put together a compelling story and use it in an interview context.

Chances are, you know a lot of your story already; Jennifer Thompson’s course can help you flesh it out and put it to work.

    Introduction

Hi, and welcome to Tell Your Story: Finding Your Voice to Build a Career, a course from Scribd Coach. My name is Jennifer Thompson. I’m thrilled you’ve decided to join me for this course, where I'll be teaching you how to stand out in your field by owning your voice and your story.

Off the bat, you’re probably wondering why I’ve decided to focus specifically on your story. Well, it’s my belief that there are so many people in careers they don't like and roles that don't serve them because they haven't been able to take ownership of their own stories. They have a story, like all of us, but it isn't being told by them. It doesn't have their stamp of ownership. It's sort of like living in the skin of another person, or like being in another person's dream; it may look like everything is okay from the outside, but it just doesn't feel right.

This can end up being detrimental to you and your career. Owning your story, on the other hand, will improve your chances of getting the career you want in an environment that’s a good fit for you. In my experience, people who know their career story and know where they are going find success.

Everyone needs to own their story. It’s not just essential in the
