#1 The Japanese Footbridge by Claude Monet is a famous painting, but Gustave Caillebotte’s paintings are exquisite and less known. The reason Caillebotte is less known is because he is in the impressionist exhibit with Monet, who is more famous.
#2 Gustave Caillebotte was a French painter who was born into a wealthy family. He was friends with many of the most controversial young artists of his time, including Monet and Degas. He died at the age of 45 in 1894. His will stipulated that all paintings hang at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris.
#3 The artworks were finally hung in 1897, at a new wing in the Musée du Luxembourg. The public flooded the museum to see art they’d previously savaged or simply ignored. The seven core impressionist painters were the only ones who shared this characteristic.
#4 The fact that Caillebotte’s bequest shaped the impressionist canon spoke to something deep and universal about media, entertainment, and popularity. People prefer paintings that they’ve seen before.

The fact that Caillebotte’s bequest shaped the impressionist canon spoke to something deep and universal about media, entertainment, and popularity. People prefer paintings that they’ve seen before.
#5
The Caillebotte bequest helped to shape the canon of impressionism, as he had purposely bought his friends’ least popular paintings. The most important impressionist collector, Paul Durand-Ruel, didn’t try to sell his art.
#6
The French impressionists were not interested in making money from their paintings. They were willing to withhold the gift of exposure from themselves in order to give it to others.
#7
The debate between the formula hunters and the skeptics was missing a voice: the scientists. They decided to ask people what they liked, and found that people enjoyed rectangles that had the proportions of the golden ratio.
#8
The human face is slightly asymmetric, and people are partial to the most familiar version of it. The preference for familiarity is so universal that some think it must be written into our genetic code.

The world is full of beauty, and people are constantly adapting to it. They are the sum of all they have met, and they are born average and die unique.
