THE FORMATION OF THE STATE IN ARGENTINA (1852-1880)

By 1850 the second phase of the Industrial Revolution had started in Europe. In this framework, Rosas blocked trade in the country, preventing free navigation of the rivers, which generated the REBELLION OF THE COAST, a sector that was affected by that measure (to which was added the Buenos Aires monopoly of customs and port). With his defeat in the battle of CASEROS, there was the FALL OF THE GOVERNOR of Buenos Aires, ROSAS. From there, until 1880, he STARTED THE PERIOD OF THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION. At that time the national state was formed.

From the mandate of Urquiza, winner of Rosas, THE CENTRALIZATION OF POWER BEGAN, which was previously in the hands of each province. For this he combined force (his military victory for him in Caseros) and consensus (Agreement of Governors of San Nicolás).

    AGREEMENT OF SAN NICOLÁS (05/31/1852)

The meeting in San Nicolás de los Arroyos was held with the objective of laying the foundations for a future constituent congress. The meeting was held and on May 31, 1852 and the agreement of San Nicolás was signed. Thirteen provinces, except Buenos Aires, ratified the agreement that constituted a fundamental precedent for the promulgation of the Constitution in 1853

In 1853, the NATIONAL CONSTITUTION was issued, but Buenos Aires did not accept to join the ARGENTINE CONFEDERATION, which remained under the hegemony of Entre Ríos, where Urquiza was from. The Buenos Aires revolution of September 11, 1852, led by Miter's Liberal or Nationalist Party, separated Buenos Aires from the rest of the country for eight years.

In 1860 Buenos Aires agreed to enter, but a year later this province defeated the Confederation in PAVÓN and imposed its hegemony over an apparently unified territory.

THE NATIONAL UNITY: PROBLEMS TO BE SOLVED

    • TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY, threatened by rebellions in the interior (Peñaloza in 1862) and by the War of the Triple Alliance between 1866-68. Sarmiento faced the conflict on the coast, product of the murder of Urquiza. The central government was finally able to impose its authority

    • NATIONAL IDENTITY, since it was difficult to go from being a limited region, with regional values and customs, to a national culture

    • The creation of a POLITICAL REGIME, with a stable mode of election and political power acceptable to all. Here Alberdi's theory will play an important role.
