Mexico: A People In History.
This work was directed by Enrique Semo. It is a work that covers 100 years, from the Revolution of Independence to the 1910 revolution.
The first part (dedicated to the Revolution of Independence) was made by Elsa Gracida and Esperanza Fujigaki. It consists of 4 chapters: (Crisis of the Colonial Society, The Popular Revolution, The ebbing of the popular movement and The counterrevolution in independence). This part consists of 87 pages.
I The Crisis of Colonial Society.
The work begins by timing the crisis of the colony system, during the eighteenth century. This crisis would be the product, mainly, of two factors: a) growth of the New Spain economy.
b) reforms applied by the Crown in its American possessions.
These two determinants would cause economic and social imbalances that would lead to the collapse of the colonial system.
The working mass of the countryside would be made up of Indians, blacks and castas.
The working mass of the city: peasants, artisans and emerging proletariat.
There is also a significant sector of the unemployed who are concentrated around the mines and the big cities, to carry out jobs that require little preparation.
The emerging property-owning classes enter into contradiction with colonial society, which subordinates its interests to those of the dominant peninsular bloc.
(Economic growth).
Economic growth in the second half of the eighteenth century reveals some contradictions: the transformation of agriculture and the internal structure of mining originate the boom in agriculture and mining. Manufactures (especially textiles) increase and internal and external trade intensify. New forms of division of labor and the economic boom wear out pre-capitalist relations, depress workers' wages and living standards. In turn, they propitiate the rise of the landowners, the development of gentrified landowners and the emergence of an incipient bourgeoisie.
In agriculture, the rise of traditional landowners (generally absentee) occurs and other new types of landowners emerge. Owners of a hacienda (often mortgaged) are more dependent on the local market or regional trade and manufacturing. Most of them are Creoles, active in the Town Halls. During the Revolution, these gentrified landowners
will be the hegemonic force of the Conservative party. Under his direction there will be: -the new owners that arise from the liberation of trade; of the proliferation of the obrajes; and manufacturing and mining boom. It is a budding bourgeoisie
it is still weak, with a greater or lesser integration into the colonial structure, it cannot articulate its own program.
The Creole aristocracy is very interested in obtaining the political dominance to which its economic power allows it to aspire, but it opposes any movement that threatens the pre-capitalist mode of production to which it is integrated.
According to the authors, a more determined revolutionary position will support the emerging petty bourgeoisie of the countryside and the city. They would be tenants of small haciendas, wealthy butlers, wealthy ranchers, medium-sized mining entrepreneurs, rescuers (?), free artisans, owners of small mills and prosperous muleteers. Their ranks would become a fertile field for the emergence of radicalized elements that in the struggle would become spokespersons for the popular
