    How it all started

My fitness journey started at a young age. My mother signed me up for a gym membership and we went together a few times a week. She bought me fitness magazines and got me into martial arts, which strongly influenced the direction of my life. My mother introduced me to the importance of fitness by her example. Without her encouragement and love, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Martial arts taught me discipline and hard work and fitness magazines taught me the intricacies of the body and nutrition. I took some time off from martial arts due to travel with the intention of returning to get my black belt. However, taking too much time off led to a lack of motivation and I  stopped one belt shy of black.

In my early twenties, I joined a gym wanting to put on some muscle. I was hitting a stride until a minor injury set me back and out of fear of being re-injured, I gave up. With not much direction and no outlet, I drifted into my late twenties. I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and drank heavily. I made plenty of mistakes, failing often in my personal life, relationships and business. Things hit an all-time low when my recklessness landed me in jail.

Following two near death experiences, I looked at my life and realized something had to change. I had to leave the environment I was in and start over.  A mentor I had at the time had asked me if I ever thought about acting, I guess he saw my passion for drama.  Lost and broke, I decided to move to Los Angeles with a friend with a dream to pursue acting.

A knock on my apartment door in LA came from a great friend and mentor named George who asked me a question that changed the direction of my life: Want to go for a run? I had exercised before and was a decent runner and had experience with weight training. I was reluctant but I decided to do it anyways. When I agreed to do this run, it was one of the most painful days of my life. I had fallen out of shape so badly that I was blind to the writing on the wall. The run made it as clear as day, I was living below my potential and standards and I was weak.

All the good and bad decisions I had made were all playing out before me as I laid on the grass of a neighbor’s yard surrounded by dog poop. I was too dizzy to stand up in fear of passing out. It is often through experiencing pain that leads to change, rather than hearing about why you should change.  There was only one thing to be done: I needed to master myself.

I call my buddy and joke with him even to this day and the serious effect it had on my life. It was the single moment that tipped me into where I am today. I committed and got upset with where I was in my life and how I let it all happen. I started changing one small thing at a time, creating better habits and focusing on improvement every day until the changes became too noticeable to ignore.

I started working out weighting one hundred forty pounds and now weigh one hundred eighty pounds with single-digit body fat. Since that ever so dreadful run, I completed a marathon, nine Spartan races and five Tough Mudders.  Fitness has given me the focus to have success and I wouldn’t be where I am without an eye for self-improvement.  I worked out so much, that it became my career.

Today I’m an entrepreneur that owns and operates six gyms along with my business partners Dan and David, with ten years of experience in fitness and management. Before that, I was a full-time master trainer that had successfully guided people in achieving their goals. I gained more than the famed ten thousand hours of training sessions, rising to the ranks of the top personal trainer in the company. I earned numerous awards, became a top trainer year over year in the company and acquired ten personal training certifications.

What's the point of all this? I know the struggle of getting fit and in this book are the principles and laws I learned along the way. But this book isn’t about me, it’s about you and your journey.

The problem with fitness today is all the misinformation out there. Fitness is indeed complex in its process and workings with the body. However, there are laws and principles if followed that will get you closer to achieving the body and skill level you want a lot faster than most. Take it from a master with the mind of a beginner, I know a few things.

Don’t wait to start your lifestyle of being fit and achieving your goals. The best time to start anything, ever in your life, is today. It is a full-time career and lifestyle that will pay you dividends daily. In any endeavor you pursue, your life will change only when you commit to daily practice.

There's something about reaching your goals in fitness that gets me going when times get tough. It took me many years to realize, lose and find again the purpose of what I love to do. Which is to help other people who want more for themselves and gain clarity, strategize, achieve more, improve, and perform better. There's nothing more exciting to me than watching someone conquer their weaknesses and get results. The mere thought of it excites me and allows me to sleep better at night knowing I did something worth telling a story about. The laws in this book will help you to find clarity and understanding of what to observe in the fitness world. Break them at your own risk or observe them and succeed.

I’m here to tell you that your goal is doable and not just fill you up with feel-good emotions and fluff. This isn’t another motivational book; this is a book about results. If you’re still with me and have read this far. Discover how you can be the winner of your body, mind and life. Let’s go.

    Principles of Greatness

What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal. -Albert Pike

Before diving into the laws of this book, it’s important to understand the principles that allow the individual to achieve greatness and success. Nothing can be achieved externally without first grasping the concepts internally. It all starts within. The ability to effectively find what matters, filter out the non-essentials and focus on determining your values and applying the principles.

As you read this section, understand there are hundreds of principles and values you can have, there are no right or wrong answers on how to achieve the success you desire in fitness and in life. However, the faster you embody and apply them, the faster you will get to your desired outcome. Accurately identifying what you value, understanding the way things work and applying them day in and day out is what will lead to greatness.

There’s no shortcut to mastery of a craft, there are tactics and things you can do to perhaps get there quicker, but along with time, you can’t replace hard work and effort, these are constants that will show up in every facet of your life. Time simply goes on and what you do with it, which is in your control (effort and persistence) that is multiplied with time, leads to success. Without this as your foundation and values, not much will be accomplished. You’ll have a tough time because of the mishaps of shortcuts, which stem from a lack of learning and understanding will only lead to setbacks and take a longer time overall. Mastering the basics, ins and outs from the beginning leads to fewer mistakes, a fuller depth of knowledge and understanding. Those that kid themselves in trying to bypass this will only lead to a zone of pain and relearning, wasting precious time.

Therefore, the pre principles or required learning is being persistent, applying effort, course-correcting, which are all multiplied by the constant of time. Then you can know that within reason, greatness and success can be yours. The only thing or problem that will ever stand in your way, is you. You are the great force, which determines your outcomes in your life. You will decide to save yourself, succeed or fail, achieve greatness or mediocrity. It is always and will always be, up to you. You must learn, dedicate, and do.

Lastly as Jim Rohn once said, Don’t let your learning lead to knowledge, let your learning lead to action. Use the principles, and recognize the laws in action, then apply what you know, learn some more, until you achieve what it is you can achieve.

    Decision

It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped. -Tony Robbins

The people from this book all had a common trait of the ability to decide on what they wanted to achieve in their career and ultimately stuck to it and succeeded from doing so. In any endeavor you pursue, a decision must be made in what is important, this is vital. Without this, you will spend an entire lifetime contemplating what is important and what isn’t. Successful individuals who decided on what they wanted, who they would be and what they would do to get there succeeded more than individuals with lofty decision-making abilities or a lack thereof.

The ability of you deciding on what you want and not wavering will make you have a clear path on what needs to happen next. Instead of having one foot on each side of the line and being divided and vacillating, making a firm decision on what you will stand for and what you will do will place both of your feet on one side of the line. This identifies a clear stance on where you stand. Successful individuals identified what they wanted and decided that they would pursue it unwaveringly. There was no going back once they knew what they wanted and what was most important.

    Strong Conviction

A belief is something you will argue about. A conviction is something you will die for. -Howard G. Hendricks

Nothing is more important than the belief in yourself. Outward success begins with an inward belief that one can achieve success. Winners may go through self-doubt, but they never lose the belief that they will overcome their difficulties. They have a firm belief that they will succeed because of their mindset, their self-image and overall awareness of their ability. In fact, they are convinced that winning is rightfully theirs. They may not have all the answers, but they have the belief in themselves and what they do. So much that the belief turned into a strong conviction in their ability to attain success. They simply knew that they would succeed and knew no other alternatives.

They are aware of failure and that the possibility of failing is present. However, they operate with a belief and don’t acknowledge failure as an option. Because they don’t know any better, the only thing they know is to succeed, and they ingrain it within them. They don’t consider failure because they don’t associate, assimilate or consider it as a roadblock. Rather, a stepping stone and opportunity to learn. It is the acknowledgement that while something may be present, it doesn’t mean they will subscribe to the status quo surrounding it. They disassociate themselves from such possibilities by holding such a strong conviction that nothing else is even considered. Acting as if there is no other way but success. They had a belief that what they wanted was attainable and within reach and they were focused on the reasoning, belief and mindset that it was not only possible but that the only way is to win.

To become a champion, you must first in your heart believe that you are a champion. Having the conviction there is no other alternative other than the belief you will win while ‌being in touch with reality and realizing that failure does exist, but not subscribing to what others think of you such as heir misconceptions or warnings of failure. Successful individuals act as if there is no such thing as failure because they are convinced in succeeding.

    Sacrifice

Great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice and is never the result of selfishness. -Napoleon Hill

In all the athletes and people, sacrifice showed up as no surprise in their dedication and commitment to perfection of the craft. In all matters requiring mastery, having the ability to sacrifice partying, good times and comfort are prerequisites. The people in this book dedicated their lives to their craft and career.

Staying the course during the successful times and the not so successful times, they outlasted competition by trusting the process and committing to mastery. The love of the game, practice, lifestyle and mindset required to succeed required high levels of commitment and sacrifice that may have seemed as an obsession on the outside was just a deep desire to become better and leave a legacy. They obsessed over getting it right, running the process and staying
