Introduction
Many books have been written about time management. However, this book isn’t simply about time management, it is a book that teaches how to manage time with SIMPLICITY.
We, as human beings, are inherently creatures of both good and bad habits. This book serves as a guide to help eliminate and minimize bad habits, the ones that keep you from obtaining the levels of success you desire. Implementing the tips, tools, and strategies explained in this book will not only help you manage your time better, but also help to block out other unnecessary and unidentified distractions which inhibit personal and business growth. This book will help bring into focus your main goals and objectives by re-prioritizing where you spend your time. As an added bonus, we have included a section on coaching lessons that leading business and life coaches charge thousands of dollars for.
Co-author, Dominick Burke shares keen time management strategies that have helped him, throughout the years, juggle the obligations of his career and the responsibilities of being a single parent. He also highlights the daily tips he most relies upon, for balancing his demanding personal and business life, which include: running several businesses, authoring books, speaking at events, and regularly participating in sports activities.
Co-author, Scott Tucker brings 35+ years of time management education, experience, and implementation along with his collaborative writing efforts. Included here, are the strategies which have most helped him find the energy and strength to cope with serious health challenges, while still meeting his obligations as a regional sales manager and family man.
CHAPTER 1
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
ARE YOU READY FOR GREATNESS? I was once asked, Do you fear success?
I was never asked that question before, but standing there facing this deeply introspective inquiry, I came to the unsettling realization that, perhaps, I did fear my own greatness.
On my journey to tackling this question, there was one constant truth I encountered, and that truth is, that there are numerous ways in which one can strive to attain personal and business success. There are thousands of motivational, spiritual, and life fulfillment books, tapes, videos, and websites out there that can guide and help you. But, no matter which approach you choose, the main key to making any of them work for you is to start managing your time in the most time-efficient and effective way towards your goals and objectives.
Before we actually share any practical steps, processes, and ideas on Time Management, we must begin with the end in mind, so that we can best utilize the Time Management tools provided within this guide. This will help backwards engineer
the fastest route to your goals and objectives.
That means defining your goals and objectives is imperative to obtaining their successes.
Yes, we are well aware that there are thousands of goal setting books, tapes, videos and websites out there. But for practical purposes, we want to utilize the K.I.S.S theory for goal setting, with the understanding that you will be focusing on Time Management. According to Wikipedia, this theory defined as K.I.S.S, is an acronym for Keep It Simple Stupid, a design principle noted by the U.S. Navy in 1960. The K.I.S.S principle states that most systems work best when they are kept simple rather than made complicated; therefore, simplicity should be a key goal in design, and any unnecessary complexity should be avoided.
So, for simplicity’s sake—What is it that you really want and when do you want it by? For example, would you like to be better organized with your family obligations by the beginning of next month? Could it be that you are motivated for change in this specific area because you are tired of dealing with the associated anxieties and stress that come from not having this in place? Perhaps you feel guilty because you missed your child’s last soccer game or your spouse’s birthday?
Start by first focusing on simple goals and utilizing time management tools to achieve those simple goals, then you can expand your efforts to include greater goals such as financial success, job promotions, family vacations etc.
The first step in achieving this end, is to clearly understand what Time Management is defined as. According to Wikipedia, "time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity."
We would add to planning and exercising
the idea of recording and tracking within a visual tool such as a Calendar, Calendar app, wall hung white board, or other items that help control and promote the usefulness of time spent. We will get into more detail about this in Chapter two.
HOW BAD DO YOU WANT IT? The adage "we reap what we sow" is powerfully demonstrated when you visually track your efforts and results.
There are 2 main steps involved in Time Management, the first one is to plant the seed (outline in writing, all the
