    Summary

First Comes Love by Emily Giffin is a novel told from the alternating perspectives of two sisters, Josie and Meredith, who are still struggling with the tragic death of Daniel, their older brother. Daniel was killed in a car accident fifteen years earlier. Although Josie, an elementary school teacher, and Meredith, a lawyer, have never gotten along, the sudden loss of their brother only pushes them farther apart. First Comes Love explores sisterhood, grief, and the bond of deep sibling love that overcomes even the thorniest of relationships.

In 2001, just before Christmas, twenty-five-year-old Daniel Garland, a medical student, was visiting his parents and two sisters in Atlanta, Georgia. He had just introduced his family to Sophie, a fellow med student and the woman he intended to marry. The day after his twenty-fifth birthday, Daniel told his mother that he was going out to get a hamburger and died in a traffic accident. Daniel’s untimely death cast a large shadow over the whole family.

As the fifteenth anniversary of Daniel’s death approaches, the Garlands are still reeling from his passing. His mother wants to plan a family trip to New York to visit Sophie in honor of Daniel’s memory. Josie, however, has preferred to keep her feelings about the tragedy to herself, so she has no desire to participate.

Josie is preoccupied with getting ready for the new school year
