    To:

My true love and best friend

You have played a huge role in the creation of the men in my stories.

This is one little way of telling you I love you

    Prologue

Good morning students and staff of Everglade High School. The morning announcements rang clearly through the halls of the building and filled them with a painful sorrow. By now many of you, if not all of you, have heard about the tragic loss of Lori Jenson, our high school's cheer captain. For those who don't know, Lori was killed in a car accident last night. She was hit by a drunk driver and was dead by the time the medics arrived. We will now have a moment of silence in respect for Lori and in support for her family.

To Danielle's dismay, the complete opposite happened. The high school erupted in cheers of joy and praise instead. Danielle knew Lori wasn't liked by many, including herself, because of her snotty attitude and ill-treatment of other students. However, that was no reason to celebrate her death, Danielle looked back at Dayne, Lori's boyfriend. Two silver tears slid down his cheeks and splashed onto the desk.

I'm sorry about you loss, Dayne. Danielle hated to see the man she had a crush on cry. Dayne was a fantastic man. He was smart and Everglade's football start quarterback.

Thanks. Can I carry your books for you? Dayne asked wiping his eyes.

Danielle looked at her foot. She had broken it two days ago while ice skating at the indoor rink down the street from her house. Danielle looked at Dayne again. Sure. Ready to go? Carefully, she stood and grabbed her crutches.

Yeah, let's get out of here. Dayne followed Danielle into the hallway.

I'm going to miss Lori. Danielle said, thoughtfully. She wasn't lying either. She would miss Lori now that she was gone.

Why? All she ever did was pick on you. Dayne put the key into the elevator and opened the door. Why are you going to miss her?

Even though she didn't like me at all, I didn't mind her. I was pretty good at ignoring her rude comments. She was a nice girl under all of the teasing. It must be hard for you though. You two had been dating for seven months.

Sort of. Yeah, we've been dating for a while and yeah, I liked her, but, I didn't love her. Our relationship was more of: the cheer captain dates the football captain because that's how it always is, sort of relationship. In other words, she was okay but I was only dating her because it was expected. Dayne set Danielle's books on her desk then went to his, crying again.

If you want to talk I'll listen. Just let me know. Danielle sat down in her seat and started preparing for English.

After class, Dayne carried Danielle’s books to math and talked about Lori again. Danielle didn’t mind; she liked the fact that Dayne trusted her enough to tell her about his relationship with Lori, even if he cried in the process. He wasn’t the kind of person to show his emotions but he had to trust her enough to open up to her like this.

The rest of the school day went the same way. Dayne would carry Danielle's books and she would listen to him talk about his relationship with Lori. Now they were headed to the back to her locker so she could get her things.

Would you like a ride home? Danielle offered Dayne as he helped her load her backpack.

I wouldn't want to impose. Dayne protested.

The bus ride is long and boring. Besides I am enjoying talking to you.

Okay you can take me. But I'm driving.

That's fine. Danielle tossed him the keys. I'm okay with that.

I'm surprised you are still allowed to drive at all. Dayne slipped into the driver's seat and started the car.

You said earlier that you never loved Lori. If you don't want to answer this I understand but has there ever been a girl, not related, that you truly loved?

Yes. How about you? Has there ever been a guy, not related, that you truly loved? Dayne glanced at her then focused on the road.

Yes, there was one. But things happened and he never knew how I felt. Ironically, his name was also Dayne. His last name Johnson. I will never feel the same way about anyone again.

What happened? If you don't mind my asking.

It's okay. His parents divorced and his mom became addicted to drugs. One night, while the two of us were studying, his mom went on a rampage. She came after him with a knife and stabbed him in the stomach. He was rushed to the hospital and stitched up. Dayne was supposed to spend the night in the hospital but he was gone the next morning. The doctor told me he had died from the wound and his mother had taken him away to be buried. He had given me an emerald ring for my fourteenth birthday but I lost it at the hospital that night. Sometimes I wish I had it still, as a way to remember him and our relationship.

"You still love him, don't you? If he was still here and had only moved after
