At this time in my life, I want to spend time with my family. I want to focus on the things I always wanted to do and never had the time. My mother was a stay at home mom with seven children. Chapter One

Dolly and Joe knew each other since childhood. Dolly grew up in a small trailer park on the other end of town. Joe was her neighbor. During the summer of 1970, Dolly experienced her first feeling of romance. Dolly and Joe were swimming at Spring Creek. They were laughing, having a great time. Joe suddenly and unexpectedly passionately kissed Dolly. Dolly was a sheltered teenage girl that had never been kissed before. The passion that filled her body was overcoming. She was lost in the passion of the kiss and taken to another world. She didn’t know what to say or do. She just stood there enjoying the moment. She felt happiness. She felt like for once, someone cared about her. Then her sister Marie walked up. The wonderful moment and feeling had ended.

The next day she saw Joe and didn’t know what would happen next. They sit and talked for hours on the front porch of her trailer until the day became night. They shared their dreams for the future. Joe wanted to play Professional Football. Dolly wanted to be a School Teacher. As the sun was setting and the sky was covered with the orange, yellow, red, and all the color of the sunset, they sit on a blanket on the ground on the bank of the creek and listened to the radio. Joe held her in his arms for hours. She felt safe for the first time in a long time. Dolly had been subjected to sexual abuse from her brother-in-law Charlie. He would get her in corner and fondle her breast. She was afraid to tell anyone. She couldn’t hurt her sister that way. Her sister Charity had been diagnosed with Cancer and was fighting a battle for her life.

Charity was her older sister. She was taking Chemotherapy at the time the incidents began to happen. Dolly did everything she could to avoid him. She started working a part time job after school. She did volunteer work at the Senior Citizens Center on the weekend. They were all living in the same house together with her parents. Charity moved in with her husband Charlie and three children when she was diagnosed with Cancer. She needed help to take care of the children. Charity was facing death and Dolly couldn’t add to the pain. It was hard enough seeing her in pain every day. Knowing there was nothing she could do. If she could have taken the pain away, she would have. This is the first time she saw anyone dying.

Many nights she would stay up late with Joe just listening to the radio. When she was with Joe, Charlie would never mess with her. She dreaded the nights that Joe couldn’t stay with her. One evening when Joe came over, she was the only one home. She was afraid that Charlie would come home. Joe had his Aunt from out of town visiting. She told Joe about Charlie. Charlie never messed with her again. Joe had threatened to kill him. Dolly knew Joe loved her and would protect her.

Weeks later was homecoming. Dolly was dressed in a beautiful evening gown and felt like a queen. Joe was her king. They danced until after midnight. After the dance they went to Spring Creek and danced some more. They lay on a blanket and watched the sunrise. Joe held her and began kissing her again. The passion of moment had overtaken them both.
