Early morning dew dripped down off the wall's old, stone bricks onto grass and dirt. A raven with a hole in her side hopped along the grass and looked up at the half-open window. With a quick glance around to confirm no-one was watching, she hopped inside.

Just within, a guard was asleep at the front desk. Spreading her wings, the raven fluttered into the air and down the steep steps. The dripping dew followed her down, petering out as she reached the room at the end.

She landed in a room with five barred cells, but only three were occupied. The raven hopped over to the one containing Essi.

Essi sat on the ground, struggling to breathe calmly. Her eyes kept wandering all over the floor as her face twitched.

In a cell behind the raven, his floating arm chained to the wall, Daiki whispered, She's doing her best. I wouldn't bother her.

R turned around with slow, heavy steps. And … what about you? she asked.

    I am fine.

R turned to the cell in the far corner. The immense Temel stood chained to a heavy ball. He had nowhere near enough room to spread his wings. He leaned forward and met her eyes, offering an angry grunt.

Daiki asked, How does it look out there?

One guard. Asleep. Keys are kept inside the busy guardhouse down the road.

To think … I once had a plan that I thought was feasible. It wasn't good enough.

R hopped over to his cell. It's not that bad. Not yet. We still have options. Just remember not to mention the Agrising Comminate or the Spire. Just knowing about those things is dangerous. They're not just living in the Spire's dream - they could resist or they could … succumb to the attraction of power. Ignorance will protect the innocent.

Living in the dream? Daiki asked, his brow furrowing. That's an awfully long term plan you have there.

It has to be, R whispered.

Temel grumbled, Does it include getting us out of here?

I'm working on it. Patience, Temel.

Daiki chuckled. Patience? How long have you known Temel, exactly?

Temel hissed and glared at Daiki. Shut up, Daiki. I'll take that floating arm, shove it up your arse and watch you fly up into the heavens.

They stared at each other. Daiki snorted and, holding back a laugh, said, Pegasus had its wings, Hermes had his winged boots, I have my arm up my arse.

Temel laughed. Don't make me laugh when I'm angry, dammit.

How detailed is this plan of yours, R? asked Daiki.
