There was a loud thump as Mazin’s shoulder hit the wall. He threw his hands to his face as the flickering light of the oil lamp stung his eyes. Something brushed his shoulder. He threw an arm out and the creature caught it.

He slid his fingers back from his face, revealing his burning, reddened eyes. Through the blur of stinging tears he saw the dark figure holding his arm, human-shaped, but made entirely of black fire. He blinked away the tears.

Zorana stood there with his arm in her hands. Mazin stared at her. What the devil is that symbol? What have you got us into?

She whispered, I told you, it's the Agrising Comminate - if we serve it, it will grant us power that you can't comprehend. It's the only way we can have a future together that we won't have to explain to anyone.

Serve? He pulled his arm away. How?

She patted his shoulder. I promised I would let you in on the plan. It's time I did that. Zorana stepped back and took a deep breath. Right now, you're the only other person who knows about the Agrising Comminate. This gives you a measure of power - already, just by knowing. But there's more. You'll start to take steps that will bring you fully into the fold and manifest your power. For now, though, you need to understand that the power of knowing goes for all. Anyone who knows about the Agrising Comminate gains a measure of power. The greater a person's mental alignment with it, the more of its power is available. Even our enemies can benefit. So, we need to be careful about who we tell - we don't want to empower a rebellion, after all.

Mazin raised a hand. You're losing me, here.

Zorana squeezed his shoulder. It's alright, it's a lot to take in at once, and you'll pick it up. For now, we need to find more people we can trust with this.

How many more?

We'll start with five - enough to have people across the strata of society in Ashborne, but few enough that we can still manage them.

Mazin sighed. Zorana, I don't see where you're going with this. What's this power you were talking about?

Zorana placed both hands on his shoulders. "With enough people consciously and unconsciously brought under the mindscape of the Agrising Comminate, its power will grow. The end goal is to bring it into this universe. Allow its power to become absolute.
