Through the tiniest gaps in the wood, Essi could feel the eyes of the Comminate on her. Its dull prodding at the edges of her mind made her feel tired. It wanted her to rest. To stop resisting.

She looked across the mayor's desk at Zorana staring at her. But she couldn't be sure if that woman was the source of the pressure in her mind. Especially now that she was so close, she caught glimpses of what Zorana was seeing: herself. Tired. Captured. But not helpless.

Look around you, next time you step outside. I control everything in this town. Zorana leaned forward. I could, if I so desired, have you destroyed right now. But given how things have changed since last we looked each other in the eye, I think I might owe you a fate far worse than death. She smiled.

Essi smiled back. "I think the Agrising Comminate has gone to your head. You don't have full public favour. In fact, there are quite a few people out there who may have voted for you, but who are still watching you very closely. You see, I was offered a little local wisdom. There's a legend about a young man who talked big about how he was a much better archer than anyone else in the town. So the townspeople went up to him, gave him a bow and demanded he prove it. He was hesitant, so they encouraged him. They told him he had their full support. So they cheered him on and he went out to the forest, with the town following. The cheers turned to laughter and jeering
