    Chapter 1

Eidel looked from the raven standing in the centre of the table to the other rebels sitting across from her. R hopped toward her and asked, And what is your plan?

Same as yours, she replied. Jail break. But I think my strategy is a little more nuanced. I sign most documents that come in in the name of the Warden, as do others. No-one will be able to distinguish who exactly signed what, so there's some anonymity in it. I can get some of you in there as guards. Then we should have enough time to coordinate breaking them out. But it'll be close. We might only have a day or two leeway if anything goes wrong. It's… well, if you want to do it right, it's a tight schedule. She made sure to meet the gaze of each of the people in front of her. Are you in or out? We don't have time for maybes.

R nodded. I'm in. Everyone here will follow me with you.

I hope so, raven, because it won't be easy. I need some volunteers, people willing to take a hit to their reputation to do this – that's the easiest way to the prison as a guard. Go in with your hands dirty, come out with them clean… at least, as far as the law is concerned.

One resistance member glanced at everyone else at the table and said, We all volunteer.

How much do you all know-

They know enough, said R. You let me handle the dissemination of information about our enemy.

Eidel hesitated. OK, and who exactly are my volunteers?

A woman pointed at each person in turn and said, Loreto, Vivian, Gaspar, Yuliana, and I'm Taimi. We're the leaders of the resistance. She cast a confused gaze at R and asked her, Why is she asking what we know?

I told you, R began, knowledge is dangerous. Tempting. You must not risk being taken in like all the people you see living in a daze.

Eidel raised an open palm. Hold on. You're going to send all of the leaders with me? I don't think that's wise.

Vivian folded her arms and said with a grunt, We're more than capable of handling ourselves.

I meant if anything goes wrong we could all be executed. Wouldn't you have a hard time being replaced as the leaders of the rebellion?

Resources are in short supply and our options are limited, said R.
