It had all happened so quickly that it felt like time had been sucked into another dimension. It was mid-morning when Zorana had decided to debate the dissenters, and it was before midday when she won … and they retaliated. The moment ran through Mazin's mind again.

She had a plan; it was their plan. He may have been sceptical, but Zorana showed that there was more to her than just what he knew. It was going to work out for them. They were a team.

But then it all went wrong. She tried to fight that fucking monster, but it destroyed her, and there was nothing he could do. His bullets bounced off it, but the beast that called itself Temel knocked away his sword, being careful not to touch the blade.

He glanced down at the sword by his side.

Maybe blunt force trauma isn't the way to kill that thing.

In the ensuing hour, guards fought with the beast while the other two slipped away. Mazin, on the other hand, carried off the corpse of his decapitated love. There was a quick, impromptu burial, on his demand. He shed tears, as did other former mercenaries, who were now guards.

When that was all over, Kalyani offered her shoulder. Mazin declined. Zorana had left him a letter in case anything went wrong. He made his way to the mayor's office, one that was now his, at least for the time being.

She promised him that he would understand, and now he did. He read and reread her words, closing his eyes and hearing her voice in his memories. That's all she was now. Memories.

They were supposed to be together. Two against the world. But that was all over now. Not that he was helpless.

He did as she asked; he looked into the little cabinet in the far corner and tried to relax.

The bright light inside was terrifying. And then the line between Mazin and the Agrising Comminate grew blurred. She said it would be quicker for him, because the Spire wouldn't be immediately destroyed after he looked.

Within minutes, he could feel Essi's presence. Within hours he was a Maledict, operating on the same level as Zorana.

He was calm and collected when a guard lieutenant made her way inside. A name entered his mind all on its own, written on the front of her school book when she was nine years in a memory buried inside.

    Eidel.
