    Earth Too - Kent Stinger

    Chapter 1

Kendra walked through her small garden, stopping by the pond to watch the fish as they swam around skimming the surface for bugs to eat. It was a nice warm spring day so she had decided to take the long way back up to the main entrance to the palace from the lake. Besides she knew she would be cooped up the rest of the day in council meetings, and the warm sun felt good. Leaving the garden she took the pathway up to the park, pausing only for a moment to watch the children laugh and play among the trees, turning she nodded to the guard as she pasted through the lower entrance to the palace.

As she entered the lower level she found Lady Ruth there to greet her. I saw you coming this way from my balcony. The council is starting to assemble, and I hear your Uncle is here.

"Is he here for a visit or business? Did he say?

I heard he brought some visitors, I don’t know who or why?

Well let’s not keep the council, or our visitors waiting. She said with a smile, knowing all the while Lady Ruth could sense her worry she headed for the stairs to the upper level.

Walking into the council room she saw her uncle and two men talking with her grandfather. One of them she recognized as one of Lord Moe’s councilors. The tall one she did not know, but she did recognize the sword he wore. As she reached her seat they turned her way, she sensed her grandfather was very upset.

The meeting went on like all the rest, they covered commerce, and aid for those families who lost providers in the battle on Torade. They reviewed how the battle there was progressing, thankfully they’d pushed it to the smaller islands were Zeus’s warriors were based. And they reviewed the training of the new recruits to her elite warriors.

Thankfully her Uncle said he had no business to come before the Council. So when the meeting adjourned everyone left but her uncle, grandfather, Lady Ruth, and the two gentlemen. Before she could speak her uncle spoke first.

It seems there’s a young woman on the North West border of the Middle Kingdom, who claims to be you sister. And not only does she make that claim, but she also claims to be a Master Sword Slinger. She has also fortified that claim in the killing of at least three other Sword Slingers and wounding at least one other.

Is it true? Her grandfather asked. Is MaKayla here? And is she breaking the law by not only carrying, but using her sword? Then holding up a banner he asked. Do you know what this is, and what it means?

Kendra looked at the banner with its golden sun and a sword a crossed it, the blood droplet of Able held by a bird’s claw below it. What intrigued her most was the ancient writing. One tribe. She said out loud. That’s very deep for MaKayla, sounds more like Armithist.

Frustrated her uncle and grandfather’s faces grew very red. How long have you known about this? They both asked, almost in unison.

I didn’t for sure until yesterday, I only suspected it. I believe I watched her kill her first attacker in one of my dream visions. But yesterday one of the sisters from up north brought us word of one who called herself my sister. And from the description it sounded like it could be her, the red hair and attitude she described would definitely fit her. This remark brought a chuckle from the Master Sword Slinger.

Why didn’t you tell me about your vision? Her grandfather said. I could have done something to protect her.

How would you do that grandfather? She calmly asked. By trying to send her home? You know her as well as I do. Do you think that would have worked? And why haven’t you told others, including me of your fears that she had special talents? She asked with a stern look.

At this some of the anger drained from him, and sitting down he sadly said. Because I feared something like this might happen. I know her, and I know she would not stay quietly by and not wish to help you. I also know how Armithist has trained her in the way of the sword, against my wishes I might add, and due to the laws here that training would make her a criminal. Looking up, he shook his head and added. I guess the one I should really blame is me. I should have forbid Armithist from sending her here.

I believe I have a solution to that. Councilor Serug interjected. "Master Elam and I have sworn to be her voice here, and in the Grand High Council if needed. Some months ago we received word that Lord Lotan, Lord Moe’s son, that he had fulfilled his mission. I went to Pinon hoping to find the fabled Sword of Light he was seeking. I expected it to be just that, just a sword, but your sister, Princess convinced me otherwise.

I’ll be the first to admit, due to my hard head it was very hard to convince me. At this comment the Master Sword Slinger chuckled even louder. The councilor gave him a dark look then continued. But your sister asked me a question, one I’ve asked others, I’ll ask you all that same question. If we truly hope to defeat Zeus and his dominion, and he whom they follow. Why should we not use all of our best fighters? No matter their gender? Before you answer though, I’d like Master Elam to speak to you concerning Mistress Hubbard."

Master Elam stepped forward, the jewels on his sword gleamed in the light. "First let me say in the entire kingdom I now hold the second highest ranking of all the Grand High Master Sword Slingers. Other than me there is none of the great ones who still live. Master Uz Nahor of the Northern Kingdom the last two years has killed all but one of the others in duels. But he now is dead, so it leaves only me and one other who defeated me.

Whom I, before Councilor Serug and other witnesses, knelt before and gladly took the students pledge from. I’ve never faced one who has bested me in such a fashion, and did so with no apparent strain. I stand before you this day as proof that my Mistress Sword Slinger is the best this land has ever known or will know for some time. If there is a Sword of Light, it is she, not a single sword of metal. For any sword she carries will be such a sword."

Upon saying this he stepped back and bowed to the Princess, then just before rising winked at her.

Councilor Serug then continued. I do not feel that all women should carry weapons of any kind. Looking at the Princess with a gleam in his eyes. "But I also know that we would be foolish not to except help from those who are efficient in their use.

I have a motion to take before the Grand High Council proposing a change to the law. Any woman can carry a sword if, and only if, they can prove they have been trained to do so. The council in every province shall make that choice and award them this ring. That said he laid on the table a golden ring with a jeweled sword on its face. Only ones who master the sword could enter into battle though and only if needed. The lesser students could still only use one in defense."

That’s crazy. Her Uncle exclaimed in a loud voice. No woman can pass a Master Sword Slinger test.

Laughing Master Elam said. Believe me when I say, Mistress Hubbard has, and no offence, but she is defiantly a woman. It was the first time I’ve ever enjoyed the kiss of the compass. Then blushing said. Sorry Princess.

I understand. She said with a smile. I think you all should hear what else was in the report I received. It would appear Councilor Serug and Master Elam have been back awhile.

Yes about two months. The councilor said. It was our duty to first report to Lord Moe and his council there. It took a while to convince them of my proposal and get the ring made.

That would coincide with the report I received. The report also said, in the last two months our border to the North West have been secured by the once rebel forces. They now have asked to join the alliance of the clans. She said

Yes our warriors there have been joined by many of the rebels. I’ve sent orders to except them whole heartedly; we need all the help we can get. Even if the Northern War Councilor is not as good as the last one was. Her Uncle Levi said.

That’s because their last War councilor was Grand High Master Nahor. Master Elam said.

Shocked by this news, her uncle paused for a moment’s thought, he then continued. It seems they will all now want to be a part of the battle against Zeus. They say a glowing warrior has devastated the enemy’s warriors, and they feel the three prophecies are coming to pass. — And it is our side that has the power of those prophecies.

Princess Kendra looked over to her grandfather as tears ran down her face. How long have you suspected she would come? He asked.

Smiling over at him she softly replied. From the first time I read the three prophecies in the Holy Worship house in Uncle Levi’s palace.

Then standing, she walked to the wall of maps and pulled out a small roll of paper. Unrolling it onto the table all saw the land of the Ebo. With all its villages and harbors marked, along with their Tear Stations.

How did you get this? Her Uncle asked.

I received it as a gift of trust from Chief High Elder Esau when he was here last. He also told me what I already knew of the three prophecies. Pausing she looked over to her grandfather and said. They’re not three, but one. That is, one of two told to the Ebo by the three immortals. That’s why I pulled out this map they’re written here at the bottom.

After they tried to read it her uncle said. It’s in Ebo call your security guards to translate for us.

Princess Kendra first read it in Ebo then wrote the translation under the words in Halviahan.

Looking up at her in amazement her uncle said. When you view them in this new light it would appear they’re talking of you and maybe you sister.

How can that be? Councilor Serug said.

Because of what Princess Kendra has done since returning to Earth Too. Then with an expression as if he’d just won the lottery Lord Kennan stared at his granddaughter and exclaimed. That’s why the Ebo joined the alliance of the clans after so many generations that the Ebo have refused.

I thought so at first. She said humbly. But then I asked Chief High Elder Esau that when he gave me this map. He said that it was only a part of why they did, but mostly it was because I showed them the honor of true friendship.

"We’ve been friendly with them for generations. I even consider some to be my friends, and we’ve always offered them a place in the council if they’d join.

What could you offer them that they felt was a higher honor than that?" Lord Levi asked.

She made friends with Corrie Noi back on earth; she also showed compassion for Corries’s father. And she showed true trust by having Corrie’s brothers become her personal security guards. Her grandfather stated, and then looking over to the Princess, added. Am I close?

Yes, that’s a large part of it. She said with a smile.

I’m afraid I still don’t understand. Councilor Serug said.

Who but those you trust the most would you put in charge of your life? Mater Elam informed him.

    Correct. Princess Kendra agreed.

But I still don’t understand how the three prophecies are one. Her uncle Levi said bewildered.

Smiling, her grandfather quietly answered. "I think I do now. Like MaKayla told Councilor Serug, and demonstrated in defeating Master Elam.

For some reason she possess a talent that has not been seen on Earth Too for generations. She is a child of the sun, and is the Sword of Light, because she’s of pure heart. But as far as the place of light I don’t quite understand that part yet."

You people still don’t get it, it’s like she told everyone in Pinon. Master Elam said. The sword of light is not her, but the word of the Creator from the Great Creator. Which will sever the bonds of the dark one like a sword and bring you to the light if you but listen to the Elders. And if you have his light in you, evil can not dwell there.

So you’re telling me that after all these years of searching we’ve had the sword of Light all along? Lord Levi asked as he paced the floor.

Yes, that’s right. The princess said.

So why MaKayla? I mean why is she like she is, and you? How come you’re to fulfill these prophecies? He asked agitated. If we indeed are all the answer to the Prophecies?

I don’t know. The Princess replied softly, Maybe because we were raised elsewhere with different teachings. Or maybe it’s because Zeus has brought back an evil so great the Creator wishes it to be stopped. Or maybe we are just not meant to know why. Just to have faith it will work out if we follow his plan.

But how can your sister, if she is the one, be still pure of heart if she’s out there killing people? Aren’t holy martyrs supposed to be against violence and only preach peace and stuff? Lord Levi stated.

Standing and stopping Lord Levi from pacing. Her grandfather softly said. Sit down please; your pacing is driving me crazy. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for your questions, but like you I don’t know how someone involved in a war can stay pure of heart.

Because gentlemen you’re not grasping the true nature of being pure of heart. To be pure of heart doesn’t mean you’re without fault. It can also mean you may be doing something for a just or noble cause. Mistress Hubbard is doing just that, she is doing want she is doing for one of the noblest of all causes. Master Elam informed them.

And what pray tell is MaKayla’s cause? Lord Levi asked sharply.

Master Elam moved to stand next to Princess Kendra and with a bow to her, he softly replied. Love, gentlemen, love. She’s risking her life, not for glory, not for money, and not for power. She’s doing it simply because of her love for her sister! And I hope, for us.

No one spoke and Princess Kendra fought to hold back her tears. She noticed her grandfather was having a hard time controlling his emotions as well.

Then let’s make sure that love does not go to waste. We need to go before the Grand High Council and present Councilor Serug’s plan. Her uncle, Lord Levi said firmly.

Before we do that we need to find out who will be our biggest opposition on the council and convince them before hand. Then others will follow their lead. Princess Kendra suggested.

Turning to master Elam, Lord Jeremiah asked. If the council demands her presence at a tribunal, what do you think her response will be?

He burst out laughing, startling them all. "You’re kidding right? — This is a woman who’s on a mission to rid this land of the evil madman who wishes to harm her sister and in salve it.

Then after regaining his composer, he continued. "Her words to me were thus: ‘I’ll be in the city of the High Council when I finish here, if they wish to speak to me before then. They can speak to me on the front lines of battle.’

She also told me that after stopping the dominion in the north, she plans on going to the Isle of Torade to help them push the dominion out of that region, after a brief stop on Eboron.

I believe she, unlike most of you diplomats, plans on taking the battle to our enemy. You see, we Sword Slingers are an impatient lot, we tend to take the battle to our opponent, and you will never win if you only defend."

You’re right on that count. Lord Levi said. But the Grand High Council will probably demand she make an appearance. They will not settle for Councilor Serug speaking for her.

"What will they do if she refuses to come because of the battle up north? From what I was told in my report if we try to bring her back by force we would probably have another uprising in the north along the borders. Only this time it would be the rebel forces that would lead it. Besides from this report it would appear they plan on being at the Shimmering Sea in less than a season.

I do know that if the rebels turn against us too, well if that happens and we revert to where we were when I arrived here, the Ebo would most likely withdraw from the alliance and with them I suspect the Torade Islanders would also." The princess said.

Then let’s call back our War Council first and make plans for her arrival on the Isle of Torade before we do anything more. Then we can meet with the rest of your council and convince them of our plan. Then we will meet with the others on each of the High Councils who will follow you and get them to support Lord Serug’s plan. After that we’ll hold the tribunal. Lord Levi suggested.

    Chapter 2

Back in her quarters Princess Kendra went to the room above her living area. Sitting in the large chair she tapped the top of the table, flipping it up and removing the top. She then placed her amulet and security key in position and dialed it to her sister’s location then activated it.

The table rose up to halfway between the domed ceiling and floor as the legs ascended from the floor. When it reached its stopping point around barrier encapsulated it. A control lever extended out of each of the arms of the chair and the chair tipped back.

Kendra used the control levers to bring up the maps showing Nod, and the tear stations there that were in use. She then brought up the Northern Kingdom, their tear stations there that were in use too. The number showed travel destinations and arrivals.

I see there’s a lot of activity between Nod and the Northern Kingdom. Her grandfather said from the stairway.

Yes more so in the last two months, but today most of the travel is outward to Nod. She informed him.

Have you been able to log in all the Tear Stations yet? He asked.

All but one, the first one, I’m beginning to think it might be destroyed completely. Has anyone gone to examine the one surrounded by the lake of glass?

Only the main island in the middle and without success, it’s not been safe there with the raiders and rebel fighting to do too much exploration. And remember the island you speak of is divided by the border

To bad we can’t do like they can back on Mother Earth and just dial in a satellite, and view it on a big screen. Or at least send a camera in a tear to send us pictures of the station. She quickly shut down the viewer and when the chair and table returned to the floor. That’s it. She exclaimed jumping up from the chair.

What’s it? Grandfather asked from the stairs.

I need to go down to the subterranean lake. She replied moving past him on the stairs.

Stopping in her bedroom just long enough to get a towel and change her clothes. She met her grandfather at the exit down to the lake. As they arrived they were greeted by some of the women from the women’s center, who were passing by to the main palace.

Kendra moved to the side of the lake and forming a standard flat horizontal barrier, walked out on the water to the center of the lake.

What are you doing? There’s no fish in this lake, beside you forgot you pole. Grandfather said with a smile.

Looking over to him she smiled all excited. Remember how they first started the space program? Who was sent up in to space?

    Animals. Why?

She said nothing but formed a barrier around herself in the shape of a bubble. She kept applying layers to the barrier compacting then until she started to sink. Alarmed and curious the other women stopped to watch as the princess disappeared under the surface of the lake.

The water was crystal clear so they all could watch as she tried to get the bubble to move, after many comical attempts she moved across the bottom of the lake. Finally she resurfaced holding out an old rusty piece of metal.

Smiling from ear to ear she formed another flat barrier and walked back to where her grandfather stood, the ladies on the walk way cheered. Hearing the commotion Lady Ruth had come to see what was so interesting about the lake.

What was the purpose of all that?

Blushing Princes Kendra went over to Lady Ruth. Let’s go to your office. She said in a low voice. With Lady Ruth leading the way, the Princess and Lord Kennan followed.

After forming a barrier of silence the princes turned to Lady Ruth and her grandfather. I was testing a theory of mine. One can stay dry under water in a series of barriers such as I formed; their combination separates oxygen from the water allowing one to breathe.

Not impressed Lady Ruth and her grandfather just stared back at her. Finally Lady Ruth asked. So?

Looking confused, the Princess realized that they did not understand the whole picture, she sat down in a chair and with a frown said. Using this we can transfer to Tear Stations under the water, like the one that maybe under the Lake of Glass.

And will the barrier stay intact during travel? Lady Ruth asked.

That I don’t know, I haven’t tested that part yet. She answered reluctantly.

Well you can test it tomorrow when we go to Etom. Lord Levi believes you need to start gathering supporters for Councilor Serug’s plan. Wounded warriors from the north have started to arrive there to visit their estranged families, and they bring with them stories about your sisters’ exploits up there. Lady Ruth informed her.

Has the Women’s Service Society been informed yet? The princess asked.

Smiling broadly. Yes, and Lady Timira and Lady Hanna have started forming a group of women to send out to the all the High Councilor’s home clans and tribes, to booster their support.

Good I figure we only have until MaKayla leaves for Eboron to complete this. By then everyone on Earth Too will know we have a Woman Grand High Master Sword Slinger, and that her performance in battle has started to become legend. Lord Kennan said. Feelings of pride mixed with concern and love. They’ll also know of her claim to be your sister.

Turning to her grandfather the princes asked. Do you have any idea why she’s going to Eboron?

No, I hoped you did. He said. It worries me that you don’t.

How so? Lady Ruth asked, feeling his worry and fear.

"I just can’t think of a good reason why she wishes to visit there before going on to Torade Island. We have more information on the battle there than they do, or at least firsthand knowledge.

True the Torade Islanders were sent there by the Ebo after living with them for several generations. But they are not with the alliance yet, and they are not Ebo.

I guess not knowing why she wants to go there has me worried she might cause a problem with the alliance. But they might not look at her wearing a sword the same way most except us do here."

Don’t forget about their own Prophecies, she is as much a part of them as I am. Princess Kendra said, and then dropping the barrier of silence she headed back to her rooms.

    Chapter 3

The next day she formed the same barrier as she did in the lake. Then gave a nod to her grandfather and he activated the Tear of Ice. When she opened her eyes in Edom, she reached forth her hand and felt the barrier still intact. But after releasing it she found herself extremely exhausted.

As she stepped from the tear Lady Ruth asked. Did it work?

Yes. She answered, not mentioning how exhausted she was.

Good I’ll have Lady Hanna start training someone to go.

Make sure they take a few Tear trips to safe stations for practice first. The Princess warned. Holding a barrier is not the same on arrival as it is on departure, you have to concentrate real hard.

I take it from the smile the test worked. Her grandfather said as he stepped down from the tear that had arrived just after hers. Upon seeing their affirmative nods he continued. Well let’s get about doing what else we came here for; Councilor Serug should be waiting for us at your guest suite.

Princess Kendra found it humorous that everyone referred to it now as her guest suite. Her Aunt had left it the way she’d decorated it for her when she first arrived here, and her Aunt allowed no one else to stay there. It had became like a second home for her, she no longer felt like a quest when she came to visit. In fact she no longer needed to bring extra clothing when she visited here either; she had a well stocked wardrobe in her rooms and thanks to her Aunt, one of the most up to date fashion wise.

And not to be out done Lady Tisnar in Etam provided her with the same, if not more extravagant accommodations there. Princess Kendra was lucky she figured out early not to mention any differences between the two suites in front of either Lady Tisnar or her Aunt Tamar. Else they would try to outdo the other, which could be very bothersome if you didn’t like all the fuse and attention.

It was bad enough that when she visited them, each found it an opportunity to have a party, and each party was bigger and grander than the last.

She found it best to keep her visits short and unannounced whenever possible, unfortunately this was not one of those times. As they exited the station area she saw her aunt headed toward them with her seamstress in tow. A good sign they already had a few new ball gowns for her to choose from for the party.

Seeing the look on her face and noticing her pace slow down, Lady Ruth and her grandfather chuckled. Looks like we’ll see you later Princess. Her grandfather said with a laugh. Then Lady Ruth and he hurried on down the hall to find Councilor Serug, waving a greeting to her aunt as they passed.

Later when she finally escaped her aunt and the seamstress, she found Lady Ruth, councilor Serug, and her grandfather with a group of the High Councilors. Also there, to her surprise was Lord Kenta and his second Martha.

Sorry I’m late. She said with some embarrassment. Did I miss the whole meeting?

Almost, Her grandfather said with a smile. But I’m sure your other meeting was much more enjoyable. He finished with a chuckle. Which brought looks of interest from the others, for it got him a dark look from the Princess. A look which caused Lady Ruth to giggle.

Before she could respond, Councilor Serug responded. Good day your Highness, it would appear we have gained the support from the majority of the High Councilors here. And from my other correspondences, I’m convinced my proposal will pass in tomorrow’s meeting.

We are however curious about your sisters visit to Eboron. Councilor Shuin, the councilor from Eboron asked with a look of concern.

Smiling at this the Princess replied. So am I, and as soon as she gets there I’d like to be informed please.

I take it then you haven’t been informed of her intentions on Torade either? Lord Kenta asked.

No, I haven’t spoken to my sister since I arrived here out of exile. But from the reports I’ve received about what she’s doing up North, and knowing my sister as I do. If I was to hazard a guess, I’d say she plans on simply doing what she’s said; — Drive the dominion out of that region. Then after a brief pause she continued. Her trip to Eboron is the only piece of the puzzle I don’t understand.

Why hasn’t she tried to contact you? Lord Kenta asked.

"I don’t know, I figured she didn’t at first because she didn’t want me to know she was here, and worry. I know she didn’t arrive here first because of the laws about women and swords.

We know this because of Councilor Serug’s report. But I don’t know why she hasn’t sent me word since Councilor Serug’s visit to her encampment."

She might not wish to implicate you in any way in what she is doing, or has done. Her Uncle Lord Levi stated.

His statement got him a surprised stare from everyone in the room. By not making any attempt to contact the princess or for that matter not even acknowledging that the princess even knows she is here. She may feel, and rightfully so, that the princess will not fall if she is taken into custody. For there will be no record of them corresponding. He finished saying.

    Chapter 4

MaKayla awoke to the sound of rain on her tent. She arose, dressed, and then went to the door and raising the flap, stepped out. The cool rain felt good, and the air smelt fresh. Looking over the valley and the tall pine trees covered with moss, she felt a twinge of home sickness.

At times like this she so longed for the simple life she had left back in Oregon. The terrain and weather here was so much like spring time back there, she believed that it really was ripped from the west coast by a meteor.

Though the rain didn’t bother her any as she walked towards the council tent, it did inhibit the other warriors in battle. The slick ground and deep mud, not to mention the poor visibility had increased their loss of warriors in battle. Those without the special talent of sense of presence were even more vulnerable to the enemy’s weapons due to the lack of mobility.

Morning Mistress Hubbard. A young warrior greeted her as she passed him on the path.

Morning to you too sir. She replied, hoping his smiling young face would not be one they carried from the field of battle today. It had been months since she started this campaign along the Northern Border of the Middle Kingdom. They’d waged battle after battle against the dominions key defensive positions along the border, dislodging the Northern Kingdoms Warriors and driving them back into the north lands.

She was told they could be to the eastern coast line in one more week if the weather would change. It would be all downhill from here once they secured this lake region, and then she would need to be leaving. As she approached the council tent she paused, there were new people inside, along with some she hadn’t felt for a while. She’d become use to new warriors joining up and even entire organized forces freed from the battle on the islands of Torade.

But they were not brought in by way of the War Council tent, as a precaution she intensified and placed her hand on her sword before entering the tent. She stopped just inside the doorway to check the locations of the new comers.

She spotted the new comers standing at the map table; they were dressed to fine to be plain warriors. And from the way Lord Lotan was acting around them led her to believe their position was fairly high up in the command ranks.

From their stature she knew they were not mere councilors either. These men had seen battle from the front lines. They had the scars to prove it both physically, and mentally she was sure.

Turning to face her the older of the two smiled a large smile. He looked familiar, but she knew she’d never meet him before.

You’re as beautiful as you sister. He said warmly. And I defiantly see the family resemblance.

Then when she neither spoke nor moved he continued. Yes you are a lot like your sister. Then after a pause stepped forward a step holding his hands free of his sword. "Oh, forgive my manners, I’m Lord Levi, Levi Able, your sister, the princess’s Uncle, and this is one of the Deputy Clan Head’s Councilor’s, Councilor Tarshish.

We’ve come with warriors to help fortify the boarders and help secure the sea port. Please come in, I also have a letter for you from Princess Kendra.

At this she moved cautiously forward. After giving her the letter he gave her a slight bow, the letter was sealed by wax with a strange imprint in it.

    It read:

"I’m sending you this letter to let you know that you can trust my uncle Levi. He is not only my family, but one of my trusted allies. I’m proud of you, and what you have accomplished for our people in the fight against evil.

I wish to see you and talk with you like we use to, although now our topics would be a little different I think. I wish I could have given you this information in person. But I have much to do and my uncle and our grandfather feel it best for me not to go in harm’s way.

Although unbeknownst to them I still go many places without their knowledge. I hope you’ll be able to come see me soon, but I know you too still have much to accomplish in this war.

Please don’t take any chances, and never take what you can do for granted, it’s a gift from the Creator from his father.

I think you know why Armithist sent you where he did; the laws here are very backward when it comes to women’s rights. I did some things when I first arrived that allowed me to change some of that. Now with what you’ve done we’ve changed the laws even more.

Uncle Levi has a ring that Councilor Serug had made for you, please wear it proudly yours is only the first in what I hope will become a long line of rings. Although I’m afraid others will be long in coming.

If ever you need me send word to Edom were my uncle lives, for none can get to my home in Bountiful except through him, our grandfather, or my cousin Lord Ammon, the War Councilor and Deputy Head of our clan, and of course myself. And you thought the president of the U.S. was hard to get to.

    Love eternally;

    Your sister Kendra.

Ps. Let no one know of your heritage through the Ebo, except the Ebo High Chief Elder, Omna Esau if he asks. Destroy this letter please.

MaKayla read the letter again then fighting back the tears tossed the letter in the fire bowl and watched it burn. Then she turned to face Lord Levi and Councilor Tarshish.

My sister writes me you can be trusted and that if I wish to see her I can do so through you. Does that mean I have to do so only from your city?

Smiling. Only if that’s where I am. Otherwise any Tear of Ice station will work if I’m there. He responded. Then reaching into his tunic he removed and held out a small package of silk cloth. This was made for you, I hope it fits, your sister gave us the size.

Taking the package, she unwrapped it to see the ring councilor Serug had fashioned. That ring was fashioned for the women’s side of sword slingers to wear. For now only those women who appear before their clan council and pass the Masters test can wear a sword. That ring is their proof they have accomplished that right. Lord Levi said.

So, by wearing this ring it shows I have the legal right to wear my sword in public?

Yes, precisely. Councilor Tarshish proudly replied.

She looked at the sword they both wore and asked. And where’s your rings?

Just like her sister. Lord Levi said under his breath softly enough that if she hadn’t been intensified, she wouldn’t have heard him.

Flustered, councilor Tarshish responded. But wearing a sword in public might get a woman challenged for a duel.

So outlaw duels. She said, enjoying herself.

Then how would a man show his worth? Someone said from the back of the tent.

Smiling she replied. Perhaps by his good works! Then before anyone could say any more. I’ll wear this ring for the same reason I came here, for the love I have for my sister. She slipped the ring on her right hand index finger. Nice fit, could use a couple of diamonds to make it more lady like though.

I’ll forward that suggestion to Councilor Serug, Mistress Hubbard. Lord Levi said with a hint of amusement in his voice. Now about your visit to Eboron, why go there next? There is no trouble there. At least none that we know of, do they communicate with you?

No, the trip there is to fulfill a favor for a friend to her family. She answered. Now Councilor Lotan what of the enemy today?

They started moving down the mountain during the night and it would appear they may intend on fortifying their outpost on the coast. He informed her.

What of the out posts here? Lord Levi asked realizing MaKayla was not going to give him any more information about her trip to Eboron.

They left only sentries and a few runners in the out posts here. War Councilor Lotan said pointing to the map. We too have erected some sentry towers but will keep a communication line going using carrier pigeons and leave a sizeable defense band of warriors here"

I’ll leave some extra men of mine here too in the nearby garrison incase of attack. Lord Levi said.

Good my men are weary from all the fighting and travel, they could use the help. War Councilor Lotan said in appreciation. We break camp tomorrow then, and move to the coast. Turning to MaKayla he added. It looks like you’ll see our ocean a few days earlier than we planned.

Smiling over the table at him she replied. I’ll take one of the scouts out with me. We’ll check out their new destination and existing encampment. Then pointing at a valley on the map. We’ll meet you at this new camp site, the night after tomorrow.

Without looking up War Councilor Lotan simply replied. Okay, why don’t you take one of Councilor Tarshish’s scouts with you too?

Turning to Councilor Tarshish she asked. Do you have anyone you wish to send ahead with me?

Councilor Tarshish turned to Lord Lotan. Do you think that’s wise?

Lifting his head War Councilor Lotan replied with a slight smile. I don’t know, are your scouts in good shape?

The best. He responded. But what I meant is it wise to send her out with just one or two men?

Looking over at Lord Levi, he said. Well that depends on if your men will slow her down or not. My men draw lots to see who gets the chance to go out with her. Besides she’s never lost one of them yet, no matter what stupid mistakes they make. Then giving Lord Levi a wink added. It’s usually good training for who ever goes out with her.

Training? The councilor said. Don’t you mean protection?

Well she usually protects them quit well; the only one who’s been wounded to bad stumbled into a group of the enemy’s scouts. But Mistress MaKayla got there in time to save him from getting killed. War councilor Lotan said matter of factly.

The next evening they slowly approached the enemies’ encampment. As they topped the ridge overlooking the camp MaKayla had been impressed by one of Lord Levi’s scouts. He had sensed and maneuvered them around several of the guards. She now directed them to stay on the ridge while she checked out the camp. One of Lord Levi’s men protested, claiming he was the more seasoned of the group, and that he had gotten them this far.

You’ll stay here, both of you, and if I am found out you’ll immediately leave, and meet Lord Lotan. Mistress MaKayla said.

No disrespect my Lady, but I do believe I’m more qualified for this job. I have infiltrated enemy camps before to gain information severely times, it is after all, my specialty.

Very well then, go. She said.

As soon as he left MaKayla turned to the other scout. Wait here for him, and then both of you head for the rendezvous point.

What about you? The other scout asked as she started t leave.

Just do as you were instructed please. Then she slipped into the trees. She could sense the other scout in front of her slow down and she stopped. Then intensified and faded, moving forward again she passed a baffled scout. She knew he had sensed her following him and then losing that connection was now confused.

Nearing the tents she stopped and waited as she sensed her scout now moving around the tents. She had to give him credit, he was good, she moved passed the tents to the parade ground, then across to the war council tents. She felt her scout skirt the parade ground and approach the warrior’s tents, where there was some sort of activity going on.

It was sun up when she reached the rendezvous point, and other than her, only the sentries were awake. Greeting her they told her the other scouts had arrived hours ago and were getting some rest. They were to give their report to the council first thing after breakfast.

How long before the council gets up? She asked.

We arrived late last night only a couple of hours before the scouts arrived. So I doubt they’ll be up soon.

Maybe I’ll get something to eat while I wait. Thanks. She said and headed for the cooks tent.

After getting something to eat, she stepped into the tall grass on a sandy hill, from here she could see the ocean far off in the distance. Then turning around with her palms up, she sat down and embraced the calming forces of nature.

The whole camp was up by the time she reentered it. She found that they now had the council tent up. Entering she found her companions from the night before, Lord Levi’s scout was just finishing his report.

I also over heard them talking about attacking the port of Fish Haven. The scout finished saying.

Good work. Lord Levi said proudly, patting the man on the back.

Yes, you did an excellent job. Mistress Hubbard added. You’re very skilled at you job, you should be proud.

What more do you need Lord Levi? Councilor Tarshish asked, giving MaKayla a sour glance. We need to make plans to protect the port city.

We haven’t heard Mistress Hubbard’s report yet. Lord Levi said. Do you have anything more to add?

I don’t know? She replied, making Councilor Tarshish smile. I wasn’t present when the others of my group reported. As they were instructed to not wait for me, to meet you here and report. — Did they report that the enemy plans on using a dragon in their attack on the port city?

Dragons? Councilor Tarshish exclaimed. What makes you think they’ll use dragons?

Reaching in her tunic she withdrew some papers. Then unfolded them onto the table. "I took the trouble to copy this last night while I was in their council tent. They show their planed route south after the attack on Fish Haven.

I also took the liberty to read a few of the massages they left in the tent. They’ve planned their attack for the day after tomorrow, that’s when the dragons and their wizard handler will arrive."

You were inside their council tent? Lord Levi asked.

Yes I went there after I made sure Ethan would be safe.

We’d better see if we can evacuate the city before the Dragon Wizard arrives. Councilor Tarshish said all excited, with a hint of fear in his voice.

We don’t have time for that. Lord Levi said. And there’s not any Tear Stations close enough to ask for help from the Torade Dragon fighters in time. Any ideas?

Attack their camp now, and push them back up north. The dragons will need food, let them feed on the dead of our enemy. Lord Lotan said.

Yes that could work to delay them long enough to evacuate most of the city. Lord Levi said. Let's get the men moving.

As they started to leave the tent Lord Lotan noticed MaKayla still sitting on a chair by the maps.

Is there something more we need to know? He asked.

No, that’s all the information I have, just that. She started to say then stood up.

Just what? Lord Levi asked a little upset with the delay.

Why should we run? Can’t these dragons fly? What makes you think we can out run them? From the map it would appear we’ll be in open country with women and children slowing us down.

All the men in the tent stopped in their tracks.

You’re absolutely right. Lord Levi said. We would be defenseless against them on the open plains if our plan to attack them now doesn’t deter them long enough to reach the nearest tear. In town some may survive. But in the open, none of us will!

Do you have any ideas how to save the port city? Or are you suggesting we just mark it off as un-defendable and let them all die? Councilor Tarshish asked red faced.

Just one. She calmly replied. Fight them.

What! He exclaimed in a loud agitated voice. Are you crazy? It’s obvious you’ve never even seen a dragon, let alone had to face one before.

True, but what would happen if you eliminated the one you call the Dragon Wizard?

They all paused for a moment, and then finally Lord Levi responded. The dragons would be uncontrolled and start attacking the country side at random, but they would eventually return to their lair after feeding.

Is there any way to force them to leave right after the wizard is eliminated? She asked them. Or could we form one of those barriers around them that would hold them?

Barriers deteriorate from their venom. Councilor Tarshish said.

Wait. Lord Lotan said. Dragons are basically just a flying snake, aren’t they?

    Yes. Why? Lord Levi asked.

So, snakes are cold blooded and the cold causes them discomfort and it slows down their reaction time?

Suddenly Lord Levi stepped to the door flap and yelled for someone. Then turning back to them, he said. We have a scholar here who works barriers with what the princess calls fire and ice. Something new she’s been teaching them. Not all who can form barriers can do this, but luckily we have one who has been able to form one.

    Chapter 5

The scouts eliminated the outward sentries of the northern warriors’ camp, and then their warriors moved to surround the enemy encampment. It was far the largest group of warriors MaKayla and her men had faced so far. But they too were larger in number now with Lord Levi’s men with them.

The spring rains helped hide the noise they made, but as soon as they got close enough to be sensed the alarm was sounded. When it was, it was their signal to launch their attack.

Lord Levi and Councilor Tarshish had asked Mistress Hubbard to stay on the ridge with them and over see the battle. She did so out of respect for their position, but she was not happy, and kept a close eye on the progress of the battle. As she watched the battle, it first appeared they were winning then losing and suddenly below them the battle line broke.

Stand back Mistress Hubbard. Lord Levi shouted as he stepped forward to meet the first attacker. He defeated him but three more closed in and Councilor Tarshish fell to the ground wounded. Then just as he was to be finished off, MaKayla leaped over him and cut down his attacker. Turning quickly she eliminated two of Lord Levi’s attackers. Leaving him the last one to finish off, which he did sufficiently, and with great agility MaKayla thought for a man his age.

Intensifying to her full strength she helped push the enemy back to the battle lines. Then with Lord Lotan and his men, they proceeded to carve a path directly into the northern encampment.

Upon reaching the enemies council tent she demanded a surrender, and when it was refused. Lord Lotan and his men defeated and disarmed them all. Upon seeing their leaders defeated some of the warriors tried to run, only to be stopped by Lord Levi’s men. Most however, did just what the others they encountered from the north have done when their leaders were taken. They threw down their weapons and surrendered.

How’s Councilor Tarshish? MaKayla asked when Lord Levi arrived at the captured council tent and its few remaining leaders.

The healers say his wounds will heal, but he may lose the use of his sword arm. He’ll be taken back to Edam as soon as he’s strong enough. He then looked over at the Northen leaders sitting or laying on the floor. Who treated and bound their wounds? I saw no healers here yet." He asked.

Mistress Hubbard tended to them. Lord Lotan informed him.

Looking down at her in surprise Lord Levi simply said. You are more like your sister than I first thought Mistress Hubbard. Oh, by the way councilor Tarshish and I would like to offer you our deepest gratitude for saving our lives out there today.

You're welcome, but I was only doing my duty. She said with a slight blush.

If ever there is anything we can do for you, just ask. Lord Levi said, giving her a deep bow.

It seems you’ve joined the rest of us on a long list Lord Levi. Lord Lotan said with a smile.

There is one thing you can do for me if you would. She said reaching into her tunic she pulled out a letter sealed with wax. Could you please have someone deliver this to the leader of the Ebo’s?

Taking the letter Lord Levi bowed and said. I will have it done post haste Mistress Hubbard. Then turning to Lord Lotan, he asked Have we started to clear the field?

Yes, by tomorrow there will be no sign of a battle here.

Good, I’ll have the spear men and the scholars ready and in place in the pits for the dragons’ arrival. Lord Levi informed them.

I sure hope this works. MaKayla said. If not, how hard is it to kill a dragon?

Killing it’s not too hard I have been told; it’s getting close enough to do so. But without the barriers formed by the Dragon Wizard himself, hopefully it will be a whole lot easier. Lord Levi said. But we will suffer terrible loses in doing so.

    Chapter 6

The next day they took shelter a top the ridge again, but this time under cover so as not to be seen from the air. MaKayla was excited, and nervous, at the same time. She’d never seen these dragons before and from their description she had some doubt if she even wanted to, after all back home she was not fond of snakes. She also could tell from the looks on Lords Levi and Lotan’s faces. Not to mention the other generals with them, they too were frightened for the dragons to arrive. The longer time went on she too started to find herself
