The Dragon Realms - Kent Stinger

    Chapter 1

Billy was sitting out on the patio of the Dragon Palace, admiring the view of the forest, and thinking about walking up to the lake and doing some fishing. He enjoyed their visits here, because of all the greenery, true the Dragon Island had its share of green forests and fields. But their island was smaller, and the Jasper Mountains were mostly barren rock. Here things just seemed a little more peaceful, maybe it was because it was the first home Tai-yu and him shared, or maybe it was because of Queen Luanna. Either way, he felt more at peace here than on the island that they now called home.

Dad, dad! Mingmei called out, snapping him from his daydreams.

Yes dear what do you need? Billy asked his daughter and turned to see her and her small group of friends. He was surprised to see them all dressed in green pants out fits, with back packs, and walking sticks. That is the Humans, and Nubs, the feries however carried just their waist packs, since a back pack and wings didn’t quite go together.

Would you please tell Arrow that we don’t need a bunch of old guards just to go on a picnic?

    And what about your sister?

Lein wants to stay with Mom and the Queen in the kitchen. She thinks baking is more fun.

That didn’t surprise him, Lein was like her mother in that way, Mingmei how ever was more like him, and that was what worried him.

Seeing the look on her father’s face, she added. We wish to go up to the North shore behind the castle. There’s a beautiful grotto there with some interesting artifacts we want to explore.

Mingmei this is not Dragon Island and here only the city is protected by the Queen’s magic. Outside these walls one is not protected from the shadow and his spawn, and you know the rules.

Yea, Yea, I know. But I’m not going a lone, and Genji says I need to start taking some risks if I’m to find my weaknesses.

Doing foolish things is not what I meant by risky! Billy heard Genji respond, and he found it hard not to smile.

I’ll repeat, no one ventures into unprotected areas unguarded, and none of you young ones go hiking without a guardian. Even if one of them has the magic of a dragon. He told them, and then smiled as Ah Lam gave him a suggestion.

    Dad please! Mingmei pleaded.

Okay, maybe I can let you go without the guard.

All the Young ones began to cheer, that is all but his daughter. What’s wrong Mingmei? The young fairy standing next to her asked. You don’t seem too excited.

Mingmei looked up at her dad’s smiling face. That’s because I don’t trust him when he smiles like that. Then crossing her arms she looked up and him and cocking her head to one side, asked. Okay what’s the deal? I take it mom is involved with your decision somehow.

She’s up at the castle with the Queen. He said, trying to look put out.

I’m not dumb dad! You’re a Dragon Master for pete-sake. What do you three have in mind?

Well I was going to go fishing up at the lake, but I’m sure the Queen and your mother would like to try some of their new recipes for sea bass. By the way I take it Genji‘s the one who told you about the artifacts. Billy said with a large smile.

Dad! Mingmei exclaimed. This is a young ones outing, not one for the whole family!

Billy walked over and took his daughter by the hand. "You’re a bearer Mingmei. You’re never alone, and never out of touch with your family.

And yes, I will be going with you, but I promise as long as I can talk with Genji, I’ll stay out of your way while you and the rest of your friends search for the artifacts. Then with a big smile added. That is as long as the fishing is good."

This last comment got a few chuckles from the male members of the group, which in turn got them a punch in the arm.

    But DAD!!

Listen Mingmei, it’s either me, or Arrows men. You make the choice. Billy said.

Pick your dad! One of the young Nubs said, and then blushed when Billy smiled over at her.

Okay, Okay! You can go with us dad. But you must leave us alone.

Putting his arm around her, and kissing her atop the head. He headed for the palace. I’ll meet you up near Unicorn falls.

Ah Lam tell Tai-yu and Luanna to plan for a fish fry for the young ones. We’ll be back by dusk. I’ll have the fish delivered when we start back.

I take it then that Arrows guards will still be watching over our daughter?Ah Lam asked.

Yes, they’ll still be going, only they’ll fly over the wall to the grotto, and take up positions before we get there. After all those deadly vultures the spwan call Dragoons have begun to come out earlier, and are still as hard to spot, as they are to kill. Sooner or later, they will try to test the Queens defenses again.

Billy continued to gather his fishing, and fighting gear, while he waited for Ah lam to relay his message, and his wife’s response. Billy, Tai-yu’s okay with your plan, and says The Princesss Queen is all excited to try some of their new recipes. Then after another pause added. Please keep a sharp eye on our daughter.

The trip to the grotto took only a couple of hours by horse, and by noon Mingmei, and her friends, were climbing among the cliffs looking for the artifacts Genji had told her about.

Billy found a spot along the beach where he could see the kids as they climbed over the rocks. Even as serine as the grotto was, every time one of the kids found something and squealed, or cried out to the others. Billy jumped and searched the cliffs for his daughter.

It was getting dark by the time they returned and entered through the ornate metal gates to the city, and were told that on the marrow the queen had invited them all up to her castle for a fish fry. Billy did have some luck fishing, as did a few of the boys who after a couple of hours digging in the rocks, decided it was more fun to fish, than look for old relics.

The next afternoon as Billy finished off his second helping of the new recipes for the fish, he decided that all the hassle of the trip was worth it. Not just because the fish dishes were fantastic, but because he noticed a deeper bond between his daughter and her friends.

A penny for your thoughts. He heard the Queen Mother ask.

Turning he saw her smiling over at him, he was amazed at how much she had aged since she’d given up her throne to Luanna. Though still beautiful, her face showed more wrinkles and her hair was now snow white.

What can I do for you Queen Isabella?

I was just wondering if you’d had a chance to look at the items your daughter and her friends had brought back with them?

Some of it, though I don’t know why they carried it all back here? Bill replied and looked over to his daughter and her little sister and brother. Is any of it suitable for your museum?

Only a few pieces, but what I was referring to was the one your daughter brought back that was in the rusty iron box.

You mean the Jade puzzle box?

Yes, she told me you can see a lot of magic in it.

Yes, it’s surrounded by Blue and silver sparks. Billy informed her. And the magic is strong, much stronger than I believe a piece of jade could hold along.

So you think there’s something inside that holds greater magic? She asked, as they walked farther away from the activities to sit on a stone bench that over looked her beautiful private garden.

Bill nodded at one of the royal guards who moved into the shadows when they arrived. Yes I believe there is something inside the box that Genji wished Mingmei to have. But she will not relay that information to me, or Tai-yu. Has she said anything to you or Luanna?

Only that Mingmei must solve the puzzle of the box to reclaim its contents. That and that no one but her bearer can touch the box.

Yes one of the boys got curious when we stopped to rest on our way back; he was knocked back a few feet, and rendered incoherent for a few minutes. I was about to take it from Mingmei when Genji informed her to warn us all that only she could touch it.

The Young ones told me the same story. Luckily the spell that guards the box is similar it seems to the one we have over our city. It will react to whoever touches it in accordance to their purity. After saying this, she reached over and took Billy’s hand. Have you heard from the matriarch yet?

No, not a word, but we are going to the farm for a visit in a couple of weeks, maybe Mother has more information. She said she was going to visit her sister in the last message we received from her.

I hope this help she needs doesn’t involve the Shadow! Queen Isabella said, then stood up and looked up to the stars. It’s getting late; we should send the young ones home. That said she left Billy sitting in the garden.

Dad? Mingmei said from the walkway behind where he sat. I need to talk with you.

Billy stood and held out his hand for his daughter, then after grasping her hand, pulled her close. You know you can always talk with me. Then seeing her sad expression, sat back on the bench and pulled her down next to him. What’s the problem? Has one of your friends done something to upset you?

Shaking her head, Mingmei looked over to the fountain. No one has done anything; it’s something I feel I need to do. After saying this, she leaned her head on her father’s chest. I need to stay here in the castle, and not return with you and mom, when you go home.

Startled by this, Billy only hugged his daughter tighter; Tai-yu had warned him about this, only he figured it would be a while longer before it happened. Why?

I need to learn more about the magic of the stones, and how to use them.

Your mother and I have taught you all we know, and you must keep up with your other exercises. Billy replied in a soft voice.

Queen Isabella knows more about the magic of the stones than even Grandma does. Besides Aunt Luanna has access to even more about them in her private library. I need to know all I can about the magic in the box.

Is that what Genji has told you?

Mingmei leaned away from her father and looked him in the eyes. She will not tell me anything about the boxe’s contents, only that I must solve the puzzle box to obtain its contents. That and that once I do I’ll know what to do with whats inside.

So if that’s true, why stay here with the Queen?

Mingmei looked at her father for some time, then streached up and kissed him on the cheek. "You needn’t worry Dad, I’m not a puppet of Genji, I have my own thoughts you know. With all the knowledge that comes with being a bearer, I find it hard to study in school like the others.

In fact most of the time the history, and art class are the only classes I find a challenge. But I want to learn! I want to know why I was chosen to be a bearer so young and how was it even possible. I want to know about the other Realms, and where you and mom came from. There is so much Genji has memories of, but so much she hasn’t.

She’s been able to provide me with so much information but for some reason I crave more. Then leaning back against her father she sighed and added with a sad tone. Am I weird, or what?"

Billy pulled her tight, and fought to control his emotions, then when he figured he could control them answered. You’re not weird dear, no more than I am, for I’ve always wished to know more. As for staying here, well we will have to discuss it with your mother. If she agrees there will be much more we will have to arrange for you to stay here alone.

After snuggling up closer to her father, she smiled. I’m never alone, you know that. But I’m sure Arrow can find someone to help with my martial arts training. As for staying here, I’ll stay at our palace, not with the royals.

Billy thought for a moment about her statement then in a soft, but firm voice, replied. "If you’re to stay here, you will need another guardian besides Genji. One who will keep an eye on you and your friends?

As for Arrow assigning you a trainer, I have one in mind who can teach you all he knows, for she was one of my best students, and has the experience in battle you should know. Besides it’s time you had your own protective guard."

But Dad…. Mingmei started to say, but was interrupted by her mother, who stepped out from behind the fountain.

Mingmei listen to your father! Tai-yu said in a stern, but shaky voice. If you are to stay here and learn, you will need to concentrate on learning. You can do that better not having to worry about your safety, after all the shadow still has spies’ among us even if his spwan can’t enter the city.

Surprised by this Mingmei just stared at her mother.

Billy too was surprised, for Tai-yu spoke as though she’d heard their whole conversation.

Genji has kept in contact with Ah Lam, and me since they all left this morning. Tai-yu informed the two of them. Then with a smile walked over and sat down on the other side of her daughter, and took hold of her hand. "I believe our time to go help the matriarch is quickly coming to pass.

I tell you this, not to scare you, but to make you aware of what might be needed of you. You’ve been a bearer all your life, something no other bearer has experienced, nor may ever again. Most of us were called on our fifteenth birth day, and could only access the knowledge Genji has shared with you after we became one with our dragon for the first time. Some have never had a need to become one, so have never gained that full knowledge you’ve had all your life.

Why this has happened, not even Genji knows, for she cannot remember how she gained you for a bearer, only that she picked you before your birth, which is when we are all picked. But unlike you, we had to show our worthiness before we were given the opportunity to accept being a bearer.

While you are here, you must promise me one thing. You must not give in to the desire to become one with Genji."

I know about the addiction, you’ve drilled that into my head forever. Mingmei exclaimed. And unlike you and Grandmother, I haven’t yet felt that great desire you keep warning me about.

Yes, but you are almost to the age when most bearers are asked to except their destiny. That desire might become more prevalent as you age. Oh, and one more thing, listen to your aunt. She has a lot to teach you about magic too.

Leaning over to her mother, Mingmei placed one arm around her and pull her close. I promise, but may I ask you one question.

You know you can always ask me anything.

Mom, how do you control your desire to become one with Lah Lam and want to stay human?

Tai-yu didn’t answer for a moment, she just looked into her daughters eyes, and from the moon light she could see the red tint in them. I’ve told you before; it has to do with my desire to stay with your father and my children.

I know, you’ve told me that before, many times, but how does it work. I’m mean I’ve tried to become one with Genji many times when I was younger, but she told me it wasn’t possible because I was too young. But now I want to know how you stay you. Hau became one and stayed a dragon so long it caused her death when she wished to be human again.

Tai-yu leaned over and kissed her daughter as tears began to roll down her face, Mingmei‘s face was streaked with tears too. "I believe it has to do with love! You must find someone; something in this form you love more that staying a dragon. You must find those purposes that you will need to want to return. That is all I can tell you, for that is why I always wish to be me, as you put it.

But too I believe it has to do with your dragon, none wish for their bearer to stay one with them. They have the same addiction as you will have, they wish to be human. It’s something I thing the Gods implanted when they created the first dragon."

If that is true, how can some bearers stay one with their dragon?

Because it takes both the dragon, and the bearer to make the transition happen. Genji informed her.

Mingmei kissed both her parents, and then stood up from the bench and looked back at the party. I need to say goodbye to my friends, and help Aunt Luanna with a few questions she has. After all she’s been listening to our talks, well sort of.

Billy watched as she walked back to the party, and then looked at Tai-yu with a questioning look. Genji? He asked.

With a smile Tai-yu shook her head up and down, then slid over and gave him a deep long kiss. Wow! He exclaimed. Where did that come from? Not that I’m complaining!

Tai-yu giggled, and laid her head on his shoulder. What do you suppose we are wanted for, and how long will we have to wait to find out?

I wish I knew, you’ve known Deseray longer then I have, I just hope it’s not too dangerous, and our time away from here will be short.Billy replied and ran his hand through her hair. I just hope Mother Wong found something out from her visits with her sister. Do you think she explored the realms while she was there?

I doubt she would fly into the realms uninvited, that is all but the one Deseray was sent to.

Speaking of Deseray, I wonder why we haven’t heard from her since she began her quest with the elves?

That’s a question Grandmother was going to look into. But I haven’t heard anything from her yet. Maybe she can tell us more when we all meet at the cabin.

Speaking of the farm, do you think it’s wise for all of us to go there? After all the last time we were there Lein was quiet a hand full. Billy said with a smile.

Tai-yu smiled, then took hold of his hand and stood up. Speaking of our children, we should return to the palace, by now Lein and Danny should be driving the house staff crazy.

Yes, it’s getting late, besides we need time to wrap all the presents before we go.

Presents? Tai-yu asked. I know of no presents.

Billy laughed, and then standing helped his wife to her feet. Its Christmas back home, and I know your family doesn’t celebrate it. But we will not be back for the New Year celebration.

I take it then you’ve already acquired the presents?

Yes I have, I’m a carver after all. Billy replied, and then pulled her close for an other deep kiss.

The trip to the farm went smother than Billy figured it would, what with Lein and Danny seeing snow for the first time. He contributed the success to Mr. Weldon, and his helper Glen.

Glen had come a long way over the years, and Tom had even given him a few carving lessons. But the withdrawal of all the evil he’d possessed left him simple minded, and in need of someone to watch over him. So he was not surprised to hear the Wong’s had hired someone to take over Mr. Weldon’s place as field foreman, and put him in charge of ranch activities.

What did surprise him was the fact that his replacement was female, and that she was a member of the Wong’s family in china. She spoke perfect English, and was told she had an agricultural degree from some small college in the mid west. But she was shorter than most of the kids she was in charge of. He was also surprise to find out she was an excepted.

The next day at lunch, Billy and Tai-yu took their kids to the barn to go through their drills, even Danny had a few drills he participated in. When they had finished all the lower, and mid skill level drills, Tai-yu took the two smaller children to help feed the animals.

When Billy and Mingmei finished, they started out for the stable to find the rest of their family. Dad, do you suppose we could go into the city this time? I’ve always wanted to see how they differ from ours, and Mr. Weldon said they’re decorated for Christmas right now, and in his words, ‘They’re a sight to behold.

That’s a diction we’ll have to take up with your mother and great grandmother. I doubt they’ll allow it, but it doesn’t hurt to ask." Billy told her.

Later while the adults sat and watched the children make snowmen, and snow forts. Tai-yu leaned against Billy’s shoulder. Its times like this I miss this place.

It is nice, but remember, this farm is not the city. May be we should take them to moms for the calendar new year. They might not like all they see, and maybe they will appreciate their home.

I think that’s a good idea. Mother Wong said. Besides I miss my own bed, and garden.

Then it’s settled, we will leave in the morning. Billy said, and then ducked a snow ball. Okay you asked for it! He called out and scooping up a hand full of snow, and molding a ball, he ran towards his children. With a shrill scream, they ran to their fort and pelted their dad with snowballs as he tried to hide behind a snowman to everyone else’s delight.

The next morning as they drove into town, Billy watched the faces of his kids as they stared out their windows.

I think we should make a detour around by the docks. Billy whispered in father Wong’s ear.

But if we go that way we’ll travel trough a very despicable part of town. Father Wong said.

I know. Billy said. But they must see it.

    Why?

So they will know that this place also has evil in it, and that here, the battle against it is a slow one. Also they need to know that, like the spies back home, those of true evil are hard to spot.

Do you really feel that is necessary? Tai-yu asked.

Look at their faces. To them they see this place like we first saw the realm of the fairies. But unlike the shadow spawn sometimes one cannot distinguish between good and true evil, because here most of those who fallow the shadow, do so without the knowledge that they are. Billy told her.

Billy is right, they need to know evil is everywhere, and that this is not their battle ground. Mother Wong said, and then with a smile added. But tonight is not the time; let them enjoy the beauty first. Then to her husband said. Chan drive by the Chinese Theater.

When they arrived at the warehouse, they were surprised to find Deseray waiting for them in the sitting room. She ran first to Mother and Father Wong, then to Billy and Tai-yu, giving them all warm hugs and kisses.

She then turned to the children and knelt down and smiling, produced a small wooden box for each of them. These are puzzle boxes, and when you figure out how to open them, you will find a treat in them.

Seeing the look on Mingmei’s face, she leaned over and in a soft voice. This one’s a lot easier than your jade box, but maybe it will give you a clue as to how to open it.

Mingmei stared up at her with a look of shock and surprise, then Deseray turned before she could say anything more than thank you, Deseray had swiftly, moved to the others with a grace they’d never seen before. In fact it was almost like she didn’t walk, but glided across the floor.

You look wonderful! Tai-yu told her, then blushing added. I’m mean; you don’t seem to have aged at all the past ten years. She then turned to look at her grandmother, whose eyes were wide. Grandmother, what’s wrong?

Turning to face Tai-yu and Billy, she only smiled, and then embraced Deseray again. I see your quest has been beneficial to you. Was it all you hoped for?

Deseray giggled, and then moved towards the door. I will meet you all up in the garden after you get the young ones settled. Oh, and bring Mingmei with you please. Then with a wave of her hand, the door opened and she glided out.

How’d she do that? Lein asked. She knows magic, doesn’t she? I thought she was an excepted.

She’s now an accepted, dear. At least I think she still is. Tai-yu told her.

I think she’s more than that! Billy exclaimed, and looked over to Mother Wong. Her magic was dragon magic.

Mother Wong gasped, then turning to her husband, and the smaller children started to speak, when he held up his hand.

Go dear; I can handle the two little ones. He told her with a smile on his face, but his eyes showed his worry.

They found Deseray kneeling in front of the jade dragon, Billy could see blue and silver sparks leaping from her to the dragon. Even the others could see the dragon glowing as if it was illuminated by a light from the inside.

Mother Wong knelt down beside her and placed a hand on Deseray’s arm. You’re no longer an exccepted, are you?

No grandmother I’m not. Deseary replied, and then dropped the top of her kimono. Across her back was a dragon tattoo, only this one filled her whole back and the tail looked like it wrapped around her waist.

Jun! Lan exclaimed, as did Genji and Ah Lam in unison.

Who’s Jun? Billy asked, and then blushed as Tai-yu glared at him, as did the others on the roof, even his daughter’s eyes looked angry.

She’s the matriarch. Tai-yu told him in a firm tone.

Billy’s eyes went wide, and he was about to speak, when a voice burst in his head. All will be explained! It was the same voice he’d heard Ten years ago.

Pulling her kimono up, Deseray turned towards the others, motioning for them to sit.

I thought only the women of our leinage could be Bearers? Tai-yu said. Then looking at her husband, she blushed, and then added. But if Billy could be a Dragon Master, then I guess anyone could be a bearer if the Gods wished.

How come she called you grandmother? Mingmei asked her great grandmother.

Mother Wong looked at Desery with tears in her eyes. How long have you known?

Deseray moved over and took her grandmothers hands in hers. I figured it out just before I left on my quest. But science confirmed it; you see I left a vial of blood with a friend of mine before I left. She sent the results to Heng, who delivered them to me upon my return.

What in the world are you talking about? Billy asked. Or are we not suppose to know?

Deseray looked over at Billy, then Tai-yu. The real reason I was never adopted is because I’m already a member of the family, I’m Lee’s daughter.

Seeing the looks on Billy and Tai-yu’s faces, it was all she could do not to laugh. The story about being the child of one of Father Wong’s workers is correct. Only the part about whom the father was, well that part was never mentioned. Everyone assumed it was another of the workers, or someone outside of the warehouse.

Is that why the matriarch chose you? Because of your blood line? Billy asked, and then blushed. I mean is that why she had to wait so long.

Desery released her grandmother’s hands, and stood up. In part.

I choose her Billy, because she proved by her unselfish actions, and bravery, that she was who I’d hoped to join with. As for her family line, I had others of the family line on Elvonia who are bearers. I, myself, well ---. Jun informed them.

She was pickier! Deseray exclaimed, interrupting Jun.

For a good reason, my bearer needed to meet curtain prearranged requirements. Jun said in her defense.

No one spoke for some time, and then finally Billy walked over and kissed Deseray on the forehead. I take it since you asked us to bring Mingmei with us; you’re here because of the quest Jun mentioned years ago.

That, and to finally celebrate the holidays with my family and friends agin. It’s been over thirty years since I was among my own kind. Deseray said. Seeing the looks on all the faces, she began to giggle, and then burst into uncontrollable laughter.

Before you think me mad, Jun would like me to explain myself. She said amid her laughter, then after a pause, began. "You see there is a place only the matriarch Dragon can go, at least for now. But it was origanaly created for the training of the bearers and their dragons.

It’s her home you might say, built for her by the Gods. Like the realms, it is in a dimension of its own, sort of a different magical time zone, so to speak, far out in space past the Dragon Realms.

There I lived and studied for years, at times I thought I’d go mad, and maybe I’m a little. But the time I spent there was greater than the time you spent here.

What I mean to say is for every year here, I spent several more years there. So to some I have lived a life time, but to others, only a brief moment. As Jun told you, there is a mission she wants you to take on as a family, but it is a mission mostly for Mingmei and Genji. Like all of us we have had to undergo a quest to solidify our bond with our dragon, and find our streangths."

Seeing the looks of worry on Billy and Tai-yu’s faces, Deseray moved back over to the Jade dragon. If memeory serves me right, you two began to prepare for your quest about her age. The only thing is, unlike her, only one of you was aware of that fact. She, on the other hand has always been aware of her fate.

Her fate? Billy asked. You make it sound like a trip to the doctor, or worse.

Deseray hung her head, and stroked the top of the statue. I’m sorry if the way I speak my words causes you trouble. Remember it’s been a long time since I had the opportunity to talk with any but Jun.

You mean there were no people to talk to for the thirty years you were on Dragonveil? Mingmei asked.

No one! Deseray told her. "Dragonveil is a beautiful planet; everything there resembles all the good one would like to see everywhere. It is filled with plants, and trees of every kind, even some not seen anywhere else, bubbling brooks, lakes, and seas of clear water. The weather there is always temped, with occasional rain showers. In the mornings there is a cool mist that covers the ground, and the animals and birds there are magnificent.

One can find every fruit and vegetable one would like to eat, in fact there is not much there one is deprived of. That is except for companion ship. After saying this, Deseray looked over at her family with tears in her eyes. For a land of plenty, I found it a lonely place to live. At first I lost all track of time, what with all my studies, and the exploration of my new home. The first few years flew by quickly, and before I knew it, I’d been there almost ten years.

Then one day as we flew across the Emerald Sea, I realized I was home sick. I not only missed speaking with others, I missed my family, deeply."

As Deseray paused to wipe the tears from her eyes, Tai-yu moved over and placed her arms around her. Then why stay?

Deseray looked up into Tai-yu’s eyes and smiled. "I had an obligation to the realms. The shadow is smart, he has changed the way he wages his war against us. You have seen it in your realm, as well as here in this one, he is smart. As we win some of the battles, he too wins some.

Unfortunately the ones he has won are not as obvious as the ones we have won. However I believe the ones we have won are the most valuable ones, but he still wages the war against what we believe is right, the plan the Gods set down for us to follow.

He is a creature of change, and his changes are like his name, they hide in the shadows, unseen until we shine a light in them. Only to some the things in the shadows, have become common place, and they do not see them for what they really are, evil.

It is our duty to recognize that evil, and find a way to destroy it!"

But Mingmei is not of age to wage a war against the shadow. Billy said. Besides, the war in the realm of the fairies, as the one in the Elves realm, is over.

Is it? Deseray asked. "Or is it just at a lull? Do you not still have to defend against the evil created by the shadow, does not his spawn still cause turmoil, and does not his evil creations still maim and kill the innocent? What of the beasts you call Dragoons?

As for the realm of the Elves, the guardians I left there, still fight the Black Witch that escaped us, and her evil demons she casts against those who live there. Then turning to Mother Wong asked. And does he not still battle here to wage those who seek the good of man, against those who wish only to serve themselves, and the way of the shadow. Even if here they are blinded by their own beliefs and do not know the true fate of their actions? Does not the fear and hate of others seem to over ride that which is true and good in man? Every where the shadow has those who whisper hatered and fear, and is not money here whorshiped like a god? Some will do anything for money, and it’s power."

My parents do not speak for me. Mingmei said, as she walked forward and placed her hand on the statue, an act that caused sparks to leap from the statue to surround her whole body.

"They forget I have been a bearer since birth, I choose to be one with Genji before I was born. I have known this since I was a baby, but had not developed the ability to communicate it to them. And for reasons, only the Gods know, neither could Genji communicate with them at that time.

I have done what Jun has asked of me when she took you on as her bearer, I have kept quiet. Then turning to face her parents, and with tears rolling down her face, Mingmei tried to smile. I’ve known all along that I was not chosen to rule as a guardian of another realm, or even more than one. You see Genji was the second Ying-Lung dragon formed by the Gods, she is the fighter. True, she was told to help build the realm of the fairies, and become its guardian, but that was supposed to be for a short time. Another was to become the protector of that realm, that promise was fulfilled by you mom. Now I must be what Genji was really created for, a fighter. I must do what you and dad did; it was Genji’s position to defeat the foes of the realms. Jun builds, Lan teaches, Genji defends. As you all know, the roles up to now have been sort of mixed up.

This was the reason I have excelled in my studies of the arts of defense. It is also why I have diligently pushed my limits in what I can physically do. It is also why the queen agreed to teach me all that her family knows about the arts of magic. But mostly, it’s because of the love I have for you, my family.

You see the shadow works harder at breaking that bond, than any other, for in doing so, he wins the greatest war.

The family is the basis of all that is good, and the true purpose for which the Gods have created us. They wish for us to have happiness, true happiness. One cannot achieve that without someone to love, to cherish. That someone is our family, whether it be large or small, for our family breed’s joy, the true joy of love, and it destroys all that the shadow wishes to accomplish. For he wishes to destroy the Gods, and make us all his slaves, for he has not the wisdom to recognize that which he truly seeks, love. He is blind to true joy, and so believes that power over others will bring him that joy he seeks. Just like many in this world think, but do not find.

So I have agreed before I was born to act in behalf of my family to fight this battle, one that will last far past my time as Genji’s bearer I’m afraid. But who knows! Maybe the Gods will truly send one who will end all this. Some already think they already have, and wait his return."

Seeing the astonished looks on faces of her family, even Deseray’s face, Mingmei giggled. I see not even you, Aunt Deseray have been informed of all the history of a bearer.

After a brief moment, Deseray began to laugh, and wrapped her arms around Mingmei. You truly are a wise beyond your years. Then looking over in the direction of her cousin, added. Your mother and father too were thought of that way once.

Time grows short. Jun informed them all.

Holding the sides of his head, Billy took a step towards his daughter. I wish she would stop yelling, before she blows the top of my head off. Then seeing the look on his daughter face, asked. Does not her speaking to you cause you no pain?"

No father, but I know she does have that effect on others. I on the other hand have found the ability to control how much of my thoughts she can intrude on. His daughter told him.

Intrude! Jun bellowed, which cause even Deseray to wince. I do not intrude, I only strive to be heard over all the nonsense you humans have in your heads.

Giggling, Mingmei, shook her head, then moved to place her hands aside the head of each of her family. Now you know how to control her intru---, I mean the volume of her thoughts.

How’d you do that? They all asked, that is except Deseray who looked at her with an amused look.

It’s something you all know; only you choose not to use. She informed them.

Shaking her head, Deseray giggled. Now I see why Jun informed me I had to wait until now before I came to get you.

Get Her! Billy and Tai-yu said in unison. Where is she to go, and why?

Spoken like true loving parents. Deseray teased. But she is not the only one we’re here for. You all will leave with me, only not all will stay for the whole battle.

What do you mean? Mother Wong asked. If we are not all needed to engage in this battle, what is our purpose of going with you into its danger?

To teach, and learn! Jun informed them. The realm of the Dwarfs is a realm not unlike this planet in its early stages. Mingmei and Genji will be their Guardians, for a time.

So the shadow and his spawn are there, how much of their realm do they control? Billy asked.

And why not just let us reclaim it for them? Tai-yu asked.

Because their plight in their realm is different from that of the fairies, and the Elves. Their guardian still lives, and many still blindly follow her, to some she is even considered a god.

If she still lives, what is our purpose for entering their realm, and why is Mingmei, and Genji needed to become their new guardians? Mother Wong asked. Is there no bearers there?

Deseray moved from the statue and looked at the glow developing along the skyline. "It looks like we’ve been up here all night, the dawn is breaking.

We all need our rest, besides the young ones will be awakening soon, and grandfather will be at his wits end by the time we awaken. Then after starting down the path way back to the entrance to the warehouse, she paused and looked back at the others. Let me just say this, the realm of the Dwarfs is in grave danger, and most, like in this world, just don’t know it yet.

The bearer of their dragon has, like Hau, decided to stay one with her dragon. Only the shadow has now brought her to his side, and she rules with blood and horror over that realm. We will first need to convince the majority of the Dwarfs that this is so, and protect the few who have already recognized this fact."

And why does Mingmei need to participate in this? Billy asked, and he placed his arms around his daughter, and worried wife. Can’t she just take over after we convince the others that their guardian is evil?

Deseray started to speak, then stopped and let Jun speak. She is needed in this battle because she must prove to the Dwarfs that she is the stronger of the two dragons. Their idea of leader ship differs from that of the Fairies and the Elves; it is more primitive, more like the forefathers of you humans. She must destroy the present ruling dragon; for that is the only way they will accept her as their guardian.

Shocked by this statement, they all just stood and watched Deseray continue down the pathway alone. She was almost to the entrance back into the warehouse before Mother Wong stepped in front of the rest and turned to face them. I sure hope there is more to this than what I’ve heard so far. She told them.

We sure hope so. Tai-yu replied.

I just hope we can achieve what she wants us too. Mingmei said, mostly to herself.

I just don’t see why Mingmei needs to be involved from the beginning of this. Billy said, as they headed for the door. I mean, couldn’t she just wait until the final battle when all their forces are weakened, then help us defeat this evil dragon? And by the way I thought when a bearer and dragon crossed over to the other side. They lost all knowledge of their past?

They do if they are purely evil, but not if they are just following the wrong pathway. Mother Wong informed them.

Ah-lam says there is a fine line between being a spawn of the shadow, and just losing sight of the pure goal of the Gods. One does not have to be completely evil to become a practitioner of evil things.

If that is so. Billy said. Then this dragon and her bearer are more like the spies for the shadow we have at home.

In most ways. Jun informed them, and Billy was glad Mingmei had passed on how to control her volume. Only Ly still has the knowledge and ability to use magic, dragon magic. I also sense her power is growing, I just don’t know how.

    Chapter 2

It was cool on the beach when they all climbed out of the warehouse van. Luckily the cool winter weather had kept all the many tourist, and locals away. True, they only had a few hours before the sun would lure many to the beach. --- But for now they had the beach to themselves.

Why not just go to the farm? Billy asked. We would be a lot safer from intruders there.

True, but not all the family would willingly go there, and I think your wife is enjoying the opportunity to get reacquainted with her family she left behind, especially her father. Even if he still thinks of us all as a bit deranged. Deseray said with a coy smile.

That said she turned to face the waves and started to run towards them, much to the bewilderment of the others. Then, just as the first waves reached her feet, she became one with Jun. Deseray relished in the mist rising up from the waves, and then after swooping high up in the air, she plummeted down into the ocean, then when Mother Wong made her way to the edge of the water to look for Deseray’s kimono, and Billy had started to turn to face inland. Jun swiftly raced to the beach and started to change, but the transformation was so quick he’d only half turned his head. But all looked at her in wonder, for she was not naked, she was wrapped in the kimono she arrived in.

How’d you do that? Mingmei asked, as she ran eagerly to her Grandmothers side. The transformation takes more time.

Deseray looked over at her great niece and smiled. It is also when you and Genji are most vulnerable. That is why Dragon Masters were needed, to protect them. Then looking up at Billy, she continued. But I found that since there were none left to be my companion, a few of our Elvin relatives, found a way to shorten that time.

Mingmei reached out and touched her Kimono. It feels real.

That’s because it is. Deseray told her. Such is the ability of magic. But one must practice to make it possible, but the ability to do so has more than one advantage. Saying this she looked at Billy and smiled a smile that caused him to blush.

So is that why we are here? Mother Wong asked. To learn how to become one in the blink of an eye?

It is one of the things I will teach you, but first I must warn you, it does not come without some discomfort at first.

What kind of discomfort, and is it harmful? Tai-yu asked.

To this comment Deseray smiled. I’m told it doesn’t cause anymore discomfort than the birth of a child. Seeing the look on her Grandmothers face, and that of her cousin, she giggled.

Don’t worry, after a while you don’t even notice the pain.

Pain! Mingmei exclaimed, and then moved to stand next to her mother. I for one don’t look for ways to endure pain.

Deseray moved in front of Mingmei and knelt down. Your Mother will tell you that the pain you caused her in delivery was worth it. To know that you can change faster that your enemy can harm you, will make the pain endurable. In fact, after several transformations the pain will subside. You will hardly notice it.

What is our first step? Mother Wong asked.

Deseray smiled, and then turned to Billy. You should go back to the parking lot, if we happen to have visitors, try to persuade them to leave. If not, signal us.

    In what way?

You’re a Dragon Master Billy; call out to us in the manner of one. That said Deseray turned her attention to the women.

After a few moments of being egnored, Billy turned and headed up to the parking lot atop the rise. The first car that pulled into the parking lot was only looking for the rest room, the second and third cars were full of small fussy kids, and when he told them that the beach was closed, the mothers looked relieved.

It was it was some time before the next two cars arrived, and getting those people to leave he found more difficult. The first was an older man and his wife, they didn’t believe him when he said the beach was closed; they’d been coming to the beach for forty years. Finally after a long argument, mostly between the man and his wife, they left.

The next car though was full of college kids about the age that Billy appeared to be. They all climbed out of their car and tried to pass him, but when he blocked the stairs, the largest challenged him to a fight. Billy was about to warn the others, when he was grabbed from behind and the larger boy took a swing at him. Billy pushed himself sideways and the blow only grazed his shoulder, he then flipped the boy who had grabbed his arms over his head into the other. However his shirt was ripped off him in the process.

Standing there in front of the five boys, and one girl, Billy’s tattoos gleamed in the sunlight. Oooh! The girl cooed. Look at those muscles!

That said the large boy built like a foot ball player lunged for him, Billy grabbed him by one arm, and threw him over into a large sand dune. The others began to move towards him, when Billy leaped up onto one side of the railing on the stairs, of course he stayed balance with the aid of a little magic, but it had the effect on the others he had hoped for. They backed way, and returned to their car, but not before the girl raised her fingers to her ear and mouthed ‘call me’. Then dropped a small card from the window as they drove away, all the boys in the car though lifted their hands and waved at him with the traditional middle finger exstended.

Planning on going in for a dip? Deseray asked from the stairs.

Blushing, Billy turned to see them all looking at him. His daughter was giggling, and his wife looked like she was about to burst. Mother Wong on the other hand looked like she had been sucking on a lemon; such was the sour expression on her face.

Those markings are sacred, and should not be displayed for the whole world to see.

But… He started to say, but was cut off by a kiss from Tai-yu.

The removal of the shirt was not his idea. Tai-yu told her grandmother. It was ripped off in a confrontation, --- Besides I kind of like the look; I’ve never seen them in such bright sunlight before. Tai-yu then blushed as her grandmother gave her a scowl, and her daughter burst out laughing.

We should get back to the warehouse, since the weather has changed, more people will be coming to the beach. Mother Wong said.

No! I think we should stop by the restaurant and get some lunch, and then we could take the kids into town and see some of the Christmas decorations. Deseray said. Do they still have an ice skating ring down at the park?

Yes, but it will be very crowded. Mother Wong told her.

Good lets go. That said Deseray headed for the van.

    She’s defiantly changed. Tai-yu remarked.

Yea, a bid daffy if you ask me. Billy said.

I think she’s fun. Mingmei replied, and ran to the van.

She’s trying to make the most of being with people I think. Ah Lam said. After all she’s lived almost a life time in the way we count years here. And she did it all alone.

Billy stopped and looked at the van, Deseray was laughing as she talked with his daughter. Looking at his wife, he saw the expression on her face, and knew she too had the same thoughts he had, he was gland it hadn’t been Tai-yu who’d been chosen by the matriarch.

On the way back to town they decided to pick up the kids, and father Wong, before going to the restaurant. Tai-yu invited her sister’s children to go with them, but they declined, wanting instead to go with their grandfather to the monastery.

Later, after they all tried their hand at skating, a feat that caused them all to spend more time with their bottoms on the ice, than their skates. They all sat on one of the benches and watched the sun set over the ocean.

I miss the sunsets back home. Danny said, and leaned against his mother.

Me too. Tai-yu replied, and hugged him close.

When will we leave? Lein asked. I miss my friends, and Mr. Shamison has been teaching me how to fight with a stick.

Billy smiled at his family, he too missed their island.
