Sandra Kelly

Before turning her pen to romance fiction with two novels for Harlequin, Sandra Kelly had a long and distinguished career as a writer of non-fiction, and as a teacher of writing at Mount Royal University, in Calgary. Echo Lane is Sandra’s first literary novel, her first novel for publication by Stonehouse Publishing, and the first novel ever to ask a burning question: Who the hell is Nora Stone? Part fictional memoir, part mystery, Echo Lane will keep you guessing until the end. Sandra says she “lives to write” but manages to squeeze in a little biking, hiking and kayaking with her husband, Bob, in beautiful Invermere, British Columbia.

Where do I start? Let us see….

It has been ten full moons since the Dragon Roar and life has gone on. There have been many changes on Decagon since we last spoke, seven of the ten valleys are now occupied with dragons.

Sabres’ family and sea dragons who are giving the land a try in what used to be the Dark side. Misty and her mate have gone to sea with those sea dragons who chose to go back along with a few land dragons on an adventure.

All the younglings have grown fast with the fresh air and exercise they get now. It is a wonderful sight to see a rainbow of dragons soaring in the skies, there are guardians watching over them, but all is quiet now.

Ice and Squib it turns out were Pearl and Rainbows’ eggs that Weld had ditched whilst in the dungeon. They took a while away from everyone to get to know them better. They all stayed in the Crystal Valley and visited the cave of Destiny whilst there. What was revealed to them there no one knows but them.

What I do know is that Rainbow and Pearl were given a warning that they and all the dragons should stay on their guard, and all the young dragons were to visit the cave as soon as they had matured into fire breathers.

There was a new clutch of eggs, but they were guarded in the castle that had been taken over from Weld. Some of the teacher dragons and guardians were looking into the history of the castle and the vast array of rooms and tunnels in the dungeon level. They were also mapping them and checking for other entrances and exits. No one would steal these eggs!

Before man walked the earth Dragons were the most powerful beings that lived. They had a civilization that could put any to shame. Defense, education, magic and harmony, but, sometimes trouble came their way.

They never caused it, but neither did they back down on what was right, and they defended their own and their friends fiercely.

And so it was, the call for help came from the Merpeople, they had a longstanding friendship, and often met up in Sea Valley to pool information and share a bountiful meal.

Since the battle of the Wolfcrabs was past and no one had been hurt, it had been a peaceful time for everyone.

    CHAPTER 1

It was an overcast day when the first hint of trouble started to develop.

One of the merpeople swam upstream to the nearest dragons and called for either Rainbow or Pearl. The message was sent by mind link and in a very short time the two leaders had flown in to see the messenger.

Two of our merkind have gone missing, one male, one female. We have Water called to them but got no answer. We can only hope they have wandered on land, but they have been out of the water for two tides at least and will not survive for longer than six. Please can you send your fliers to help search?.

Of course, said Pearl and immediately sent a mind call to all available warriors and guardians. In the meantime, perhaps Rainbow can find out more about where they were last seen, and how old and how sensible they are!

Pearl and Rainbow consulted for a minute in a mind link, they didn’t want to upset the messenger with any bad news.

They must have followed a water course inland. I know you are searching the sea coast areas, so we will take care of the land. We will send you one of our young dragons to use as a mind link, then there is no unnecessary time wasted. Oh good! here come the warriors now.

Sure enough, like butterflies landing on flowers, in came about twenty dragons of all colours. Led by Sabre and Coral, with Blaze and Topaz close behind, they were lovely to see.

Where do you want us to start looking? asked Sabre.

Can you position your sea dragons between the coast and the forest and the Farm Valley. We will check Volcano Valley first and then work round.

I will message the ice dragons to search the mountains, Pearl said, though I don’t think they will go there. Ice and Volcanoes are not your comfort places.

What are the merkind called, then we can shout for them? asked Topaz.

"Anemone and Kelp, who is my son. They are both old enough to know not to wander, that is why we are so worried. Anemone is the daughter of King Dane and Queen Mojie and the merkind know they are not to go beyond the castle reef.

So the search began. Dragons in groups of six flew to explore different valleys.

Meanwhile Ice had been asking the youngling dragons if they had seen anything strange when they were out roaming the ten sides of Decagon.

We haven’t seen anything different reported back one group, but Squib and some of the others said they had seen funny tracks and were going to go back today to find out what made them. They said it was over beyond the dragon castle where Peri used to live with the ogres.

Oh goodness me, said Blaze and sent an immediate message to Squib.

Return. All of you immediately. There is possible danger there, and watch out for two merkind who are missing. I am on my way.

Taking off at once she told Ice, Tell your father about this. I am going to investigate. That was a good idea as the urgent call went out to the adults only.

Whilst all the adults were starting the search, Squib and his friends were investigating the weird tracks they had seen the day before, quite oblivious to the concern of the adults. When the call from Blaze came in.

I wonder what that’s about? said one of the others.

I don’t know said Squib, but if Blaze is headed here it means trouble. Keep your eyes, ears and nose on full alert! Take off and we’ll fly round till she gets here, she may need some back up.

I’m glad we are out of there, said Bronze, it was creepy, as if we were being watched.

Why on earth didn’t you say something? Squib questioned.

Anything that doesn’t feel right, even the feeling of being watched must be shared. We won’t laugh at you. If you have enhanced awareness it could save lives. So please, all of you share what you feel

Very wise words young Squib said a magnificent red dragon, flying in at speed. Fall in behind me and we will scout this area for trouble. Two merkind are missing, so keep your eyes peeled. Bronze where did you feel this being watched, in the clearing or from the forest. And, you can all show me these strange tracks. Stay close to each other

Landing in the clearing, the younglings took no time at all to show Blaze the tracks. They came out of the forest, crossed the clearing and went back into the trees.

You stay here while I investigate. Keep your backs to each other, mind link and open your goblin senses, and don’t do anything till I come back. That is a direct order from me!

On a closed link Blaze informed Rainbow of what was happening and that they looked like goblin tracks.

Working along the tracks, Blaze was not surprised to find a group of about ten goblins in a clearing just in front of her, all gathered around a bundle in the middle of them.

Rainbow, I think we have found your merkind in the clutches of a gang of goblins. I will set Squib and the others onto them while I check on the Tiddlers.

Squib and Bronze, tell the others to mind link. Right, this is what I want you to do

Giving detailed instructions to the young dragons Blaze closed her link to receive only.

Watching the goblins as only an invisible dragon can, Blaze heard shouting and arguing going on in the clearing, and so did the goblins.

Let’s go and see what this noise is, it might be breakfast, you never know said Farty the leader. Grunge, you stay here and watch over dinner. Heh heh!.

Leaving their companion to guard the bundle the goblins set off back along the trail. It didn’t take long till they got to the clearing and saw half a dozen young dragons, wrestling and laughing without a care in the world.

We are in luck lads, said Farty, all tomorrow’s meals in one, and look, they can’t even blow smoke so they certainly can’t flame us.

Watching, the goblins could see the hilarity amongst the dragons at their feeble attempts to make smoke and flame.

Let’s surround them and threaten them into surrender with our knives, then we can tie them up for now. Just think a fishy supper and juicy dragon steaks tomorrow

They went to surround the supposed hapless dragons. Quietly circling the clearing, the goblins waited for the order to attack, but the antics of the dragons were too funny to miss, so they settled to watch them.

And that, I’m afraid, was their mistake, as one by one they were given a dragon bashing on top of their bonces and fell asleep.

Blaze appeared and said, "It’s ok young uns come and collect your would be devourers, put them in a pile over there and watch them. They are crafty devils. You can open your fire valves again, a gentle scorching will make sure they behave, hee,
