    Dragons Emerge

Elhadar is a country that exists in a magical dimension that was accidently found when an apprentice magician was trying to open a portal to another city. He successfully opened a portal but not where he had planned and upon passing through, became stranded in this dimension because he could not reopen that portal. Here, dragons, ogres, trolls, goblins, elves, dwarves, wizards, and magic are very real and seen almost every day. The city he opened the portal into was a place called Dragons’ Keep, and this was the place this story is about.

I am Cryos Sivaud, and I am the grandson and apprentice magician to the man who originally traveled here by accident. I am also the historian of Dragons’ Keep and will be telling this story. All of the events I’m telling in this story are secondhand from the people who had partaken in them.

This city used to be filled with some of the greatest guardians and warriors that this world had ever seen. They were here to guard a sacred cavern but more so, to protect the town from whatever was sealed inside the cavern. This cavern would later be known as the Garble Mines, the most profitable mines known to mankind in this dimension.

This story takes us through the events that made Dragons Keep into the place it is today. Most of the guardians and warriors have moved on in search of fame and glory. This town is a quiet and beautiful place.

This all started about two hundred years ago when a group joined together to trap the soul of an evil dragon and lock it away forever in a magical crystal shaped like an egg and sealed inside a magical cage made of mithril. This cage and all of the followers of the evil dragon were sealed away in this cavern with only one dragon to watch over them for all eternity. But this wasn’t just any dragon; this was the dragon with the strongest mind of all of the dragons, so he could withstand the evil dragon’s powers. After the cavern was sealed, there was a single path left open so that this place could be checked upon from time to time.

About fifty years later, three young boys were playing near the entrance, and one dared the others to go inside despite what they had been told. After arguing for a bit as kids do, their curiosity got the best of them, and they all went into the cave to investigate. Once inside the cave and after a long time walking, the boys reached a dead end. Not finding anything, they turned to leave when one noticed something strange on one of the walls, so he drew the others’ attention to it. The wall almost seemed to be moving. Just then, a pair of eyes opened and stared straight at them. The children were so scared; they turned and ran for their lives to the entrance.

The sound of claws and wings coming from behind them made them run faster and faster until they reached the opening and dove off to one side just in time to see a river of blue dragons pour out of the cave, momentarily blotting out the sun. I know this story because my son was one of the boys involved.

A couple of years later, the wizards were going into the cave to check it as they did normally; they were accompanied by a group of miners as usual for safety. One of the miners noticed a vein of mithril on one of the walls and wanted to know if it would be safe or even allowed for them to mine it. The wizards studied it and decided that it was far enough from the chamber that it would be okay to go ahead and mine it. During the mining process, they found that this mine was not only mithril but gold, silver, and jewel of all types as well. About one hundred years ago, it happened. A mining team composed of dwarves and goblins were mining as they had for years when they broke through into a giant cavern.

Four were chosen to go inside and investigate. Two were dwarfs, one a huge man as dwarfs went. He stood nearly two ax handles tall and nearly an ax-length across the chest from shoulder to shoulder. He had long gnarled black hair with hints of silver-gray reaching to the middle of his back, and a silver-gray mustache and beard twisted and tangled down through his armor reaching all of the way to his belt. This dwarf was a guard hired to deter anyone from fighting. This was easy because everyone respected and somewhat feared him because with one swipe of his great ax, he toppled a cave troll that was killing people for no reason. This dwarf would not resort to violence unless he could find no other way to resolve the matter at hand. He was not willing to wear a helmet; he only wore a mithril circlet that was believed to be magical. His armor looked like finely carved gold inlaid with silver, inset with jewels, and covered with glass. His ax stood nearly as tall as him and had a finely carved sturdy oak handle. The handle had magical runes carved into it, and the head was nearly as wide as his chest, crafted by the elves of strong metal, and inset with bands of mithril and elfin incantations to strengthen it against even the strongest magical attacks, and yet it only weighed about as much as a dozen gold pieces. He also carried a large broadsword slung across his back that very few had ever seen him draw. The stories say that this sword was made so he could kill a god but never got the chance. He also carried a large dragon-scale shield slung across his back over his sword and ax. His face was wrinkled, kind, and full of knowledge. Just looking into his deep-blue eyes would give you a sense of peace and security. Everyone who knew him called him Gosple because of his peaceful ways.

The other is a comparatively smaller dwarf standing just over an ax-length tall and only about a short sword-length across the chest. He wore no armor to speak of, just some leather clothes, and carried two heavy daggers. He was not much to look at, his face was disfigured from scars and wrinkles, and he had no hair to speak of, which was not normal for a dwarf. He was skinny but very muscular. Not much is known of him except he was a very good fighter. He was always around Gosple, and his name was Gamble.

The other two were accomplished goblin miners that were very loyal to Gosple; they would follow him into the pits of hell if need be.

The first is Krill; he was a tall, slender, almost graceful-looking goblin that stood almost an ax-length taller than Gosple. He only had a small mithril vest for armor and carried a great ax. The other was Klunk, a shorter fat goblin with a full set of goblin armor and only a bow for a weapon. It is said that he could shoot faster than any two living archers and that his arrows could pierce even the toughest dragon’s hide with the greatest of ease.

Using ropes, they descended into the cavern with only torches to light their way. As soon as they passed through the opening, a gust of wind blew out their torches. Once at the bottom, Gosple reached into a pouch on his side, took out a piece of flint, and struck it against the blade of his ax to relight his torch. As the others reached the bottom, they each relit their torches off Gosple’s. Suddenly, the whole cave began to light up around them. The walls of the cavern were covered with mithril (raw mithril reacts when exposed to light and begins to glow).

As they looked around, they realized that they could not see the north end of the cavern for some reason. As they started to explore, Gamble noticed a flicker of light that came and went, but he thought he imagined it.

    Gosple! Gamble whispered.

    Yes, Gamble, what is it?

    Did you see that?

    See what, Gamble?

I thought I saw a flicker of light down there!

Gosple stopped the group. Did anyone else see it?

I thought I seen something but wasn’t sure if my eyes were just playing tricks on me or not, Krill spoke up.

I did too but thought it was just a flicker off a spot of mithril, Klunk replied.

I must have been concentrating on something else. Where did you see it? Gosple asked.

Gamble stepped up next to Gosple to point out where he’d seen it when it appeared again. Gosple smashed a huge arm back against him, stopping him where he stood. Don’t move another step anyone. Krill, where were we when the miners broke through?

What do you mean where were we? We were deep in the mountain.

How deep into the mountain have we dug, not down but toward the center?

    At least halfway. Why?

I’ll explain later. For now, just get back to the ropes and get out of here, and be quiet! Gosple hissed as he whirled around and moved swiftly toward the ropes.

Why do we need to be quiet? Klunk hollered.

    Just then, a red
