Chapter 1: And the world keeps spinning

Dreamless sleep was the worst kind; a black, empty void without sensory input where you could only wait for the end. It just went on and on…

Raine figured she should've been used to it by now, but it still irritated her. She wanted an escape, a brilliant fantasy where she could be anywhere but her plodding existence.

She rose to her feet, the darkness blurring the line between being asleep and awake, and walked across her room, arms outstretched, to the window. Lucid dreaming was something she'd heard about: controlling what happens in the dream.

Her eyes closed, Raine imagined brilliant points of light. Infinitely many possibilities and destinations that would take her far away from the coming day, and the judgements and opinions of the people who populated it.

She threw open the curtain to her window and her eyes. The sun hadn't risen yet, and the night sky stared back, as black and formless as her dreams. There were no stars left; there hadn't been for a long time.

Nothing new there. Awake it is.

Raine trudged over to the bathroom, There was no point in trying to get back to sleep – it was too close to sunrise and if she tried, she'd probably just end up oversleeping. Today, of all days, was the wrong one to be late.

She had a quick shower and dried off. It was always the same routine. Every day had the potential to be different, but it never was. Everyone was always the same, dictating what to do and how to be.

She stared at herself in her bathroom and bared her teeth, gritting them together like she did in order
