From the letters of FS Ivo

To my dearest sister Emma, without whom I would have so little,

I thank you every day, Emma, for everything you have done for me. Not that I wish to dwell on the past, but I will never forget how you reached out to me when you should've shunned me like everyone else in our family after the disgrace I brought back home.

With the opportunities provided by university, I have done more than simply spend this time growing up, I daresay that I have stumbled onto what may be a passion of mine that I never knew I had. I have found the deepest satisfaction in investigating the histories of people and tracing from whence they came. There is a great wealth of information on the subject and I find it invigorating to stumble onto ancient people who felt the same! There were even ancient Romans who investigated their own history and wrote down their findings, on whose shoulders I investigate further. I find it difficult to express how I find myself entranced by the stories of real people and their real actions; it is something that I can envisage with the greatest clarity, a journey in which I can almost feel the rain against my hands and the grass against my feet in a time long ago. In particular, I find it curious to fill in, by way of reason and analysis, what goes unsaid. The secrets that are hidden between the lines, betrayed by contradiction and phrasing, are particularly satisfying to determine.

During my time attempting to delve into the history of northern Europe prior to its occupation by the Romans, I was exploring the contents of a library. It was the beginning of my investigation into this time, as I sought general information about the tongues spoken by those during this period, which is a topic which I had found much success with when beginning an investigation, when I stumbled onto a rather weathered book full of scribbling and loose leaves. It was jammed into the back of the shelf as if it had been carelessly thrown among the other books. It was certainly a notebook of some kind, and I believe it was simply misplaced by the owner during their own investigation.

I took the book to the librarian and enquired about it. He was confused and didn't recognise it, coming to the same conclusion that it must have been misplaced. In any case, I acquired permission from the librarian to study it and determine its owner and contents.

The book was difficult for me to unravel at first – I was able to
