    1: Losing What You Love

Freedom. That's what childhood is about. Before the concerns and responsibilities of the adult world, all a child knows is freedom. Swinging off the monkey bars, the child landed with a giggle. He played with the kids on the playground equipment, not a care in the world.

Not too far from the playground were the parents, sitting on park benches and chatting away. Even they felt a free release in the afternoon sun, their responsibilities for the day behind them.

They glanced from each other to their kids, laughing. The playground was closer to the road than the park benches, one could sprint and, if there were no cars coming, be out of sight behind and between houses in a minute.

There were houses all around, with families going about their business - they had grown used to the sound of children playing and paid it no special heed, but on one side side of the playground was the bad part of town. The kind you didn't want to walk through at night.

Not that the parents or children were worried - no-one would be stupid enough to do something in broad daylight. That's why none of them noticed the two figures standing off to the side. They stood under a tree, cloaked in the afternoon shade.

An obese woman and a slender man.

Even if anyone did notice them, they probably disregarded them as people enjoying the shade. Your average person wouldn't have picked up on the coldness of their stances and the hostility of the way they barely regarded each other.

The man motioned to the woman, his shoulder dropped and he leaned forward. It was an animalistic gesture; to lower yourself before the other person and give them the power. His eyes pleaded with her.

The woman muttered quietly to him. He muttered back, and shook his head, stepping towards her. Her face remained stony, and she did not move. She met his eyes for just an instant, and he stepped back. Still, her expression did not change.

Finally she offered a half-smile and beckoned him over. He smiled and walked toward her.

From the outside, it looked like she embraced him in a one-armed hug. Most wouldn't have noticed her hand grabbing his hair tightly. No-one would've seen the fire in her eyes or heard the brimstone in her husky voice.

No-one except the thin man. The woman's chubby hand rifled through her jacket pocket.

Whatever she said and showed him got her point across as, when she let go of him, the man turned and ran, sprinting across the road and disappearing. The parents on the bench didn't notice; they were too busy chatting. And the kids didn't notice they were too busy laughing.

A number of psychological tests have demonstrated how, given focus on one thing, people will disregard what's right in front of them. The obese woman waited for the conversation between the parents
