Chapter 1
Denver
I called them in to dinner, like I always do. But they weren't there. Salman knows not to go past hearing distance and Anum is always stuck to him like glue anyway.
Maryam shook her head, her eyes red and puffy from crying so much.
James wrapped his arm around his wife, squeezing the hand that he was holding.
Did you report it to the police?
Ali asked, coming to his sister's side, crouching down to take her other hand.
No, not yet,
James said, his voice shaky. I tracked their scents, but they disappeared at the road. Must have gotten into a car.
Did you smell anyone else with them?
I asked.
He shook his head, frowning.
No. And they know not to go as far as the road.
Something must have lured them away, to where they could be taken more easily.
OK, first thing you need to do is report this to the police. They'll put out an alert for the kids.
Ali stood up. We'll find them.
James nodded as he stood with his wife.
He was on the phone with the police as he ushered her out to their car.
Ali waited until they were out of earshot.
Denver, I need you to take point on investigation. I'm going to go see if I can find anything else out near their house. Maybe they missed something.
I could see the worry in his eyes as he picked up his phone and dialed Serena, the pack's Third. She'd make sure to gather together all available pack members to join the search.
I didn't know how much we'd uncover on foot, but we had to try. But if James was right, this wasn't a case of pups wandering off on their own.
It was a kidnapping.
And I didn't want to think of all the reasons why children could be taken.
This called for an in-person visit to the station. I doubted I'd be able to get anything otherwise.
Leaving Ali on the phone, I jogged to my car and drove into the heart of the city. Our pack land was just outside the city proper, but we were still in the department's jurisdiction.
I walked into the busy front office, not bothering to go to the front desk. As long as I moved with confidence, I found I could get into a surprising number of places without being stopped.
Moving through the busy hall, I skimmed name plates mounted near each door.
Convenient.
I was almost to the end of offices when I saw the name I wanted.
Kay Park.
Her door was open.
Knocking on the doorjamb, I stepped in and closed the door behind me.
Kay looked up from her desk and frowned at me.
She'd cut her hair since the last time I'd seen her. Her delicate round face was framed by a longer bob, the soft bangs drawing attention to her dark eyes. She was small at just a couple inches over five feet, but people who underestimated her would most definitely get a rude awakening.
She usually called me in if she needed help with tracking. I trained some of the best scent tracking dogs in the country. They almost never needed my nose to back them up.
Though it was easy enough to give them cues in the right direction if they got distracted or lost.
Yes, sorry, I'm going to have to call you back. Yeah, got it.
She hung up and leaned back in her chair, the battered leather of it matching the scarred top of her desk.
It's not exactly polite to barge in like this,
she said with a raised eyebrow.
I'm not exactly feeling polite at the moment. I have a couple of missing kids to track down.
Her face sharpened and shut down at the same time, into what I always thought of as her detective face.
Sit down. Tell me what you know. I'm assuming the parents reported it?
Yes,
I said, folding myself into one of the spindly chairs set in front of the desk. It was almost like they chose them specifically to discourage visitors.
Nah.
I gave her the rundown of the details, which admittedly, weren't much. But the way she reacted to them, or rather, the way she didn't
