    Chapter 1

    Saif

This is a pretty impressive resume. Why do you want to relocate to Sunnyvale?

I looked at Sheriff Booker Marino, trying to gauge what tactic would work out best here.

He was a large, intimidating looking guy. Around six feet two inches, with shaggy, dirty blond hair and brown eyes, dimples that I'd only seen briefly as he spoke to one of his officers, and a muscled body packed into the tan uniform that he wore.

I was guessing the five o'clock shadow he was sporting was perpetual since it was only one in the afternoon.

There was no getting around the fact that the Sheriff was hot by any standard. Not a distraction I needed, but it wasn't as if I had a choice in the matter.

I just wanted a change of pace. I've lived in the city my whole life and it felt like it was time for something different.

He stared at me, his face so neutral that I could have projected any emotion I wanted onto it.

    Neat trick.

I see. Well, I'm just going to make some calls, check out your contacts here, and give you a call. Are you staying in town?

Yes. I'd already rented a small place that suited me just fine.

And after having to pay rent in the aforementioned city, the break in price was a nice surprise.

Great. I'll be in touch. He stood, signaling the end of the interview.

I followed suit, taking his large, callused hand in mine when he offered it.

His eyes didn't change as they met mine.

Maybe I was the only one who felt that tingle of attraction at the touch, even as platonic as it was.

    Thank you for the opportunity.

    He nodded.

As I walked out, I smiled at the officer working the phone and she smiled back at me, her face round and cheerful.

At least someone around here seemed to like me.

I doubted I'd be getting a call back from the boss though.

I could feel Booker's eyes on me as I stepped out.

    Booker

I watched Saif Basra walk out.

He looked just as good going as he did coming, the suit he'd worn to the interview cut to fit that hard body.

One of the reasons I felt hesitant hiring him on the spot.

The other being that my gut was saying there was more to him than there seemed.

And my gut wasn't usually wrong.

I like him. He's cute, Melissa remarked.

That is what I look for when I hire someone, I remarked dryly.

Maybe it should be, she said, grinning as she picked up the phone.

I grunted, walking back into my office and closing the door.

    I had a vacancy.

One of the problems with the policing of what amounted to a big small town was that there weren't a lot of qualified candidates when I needed to add people to the force.

I definitely needed another person, but we'd been making do for a while now, so it didn't feel like an emergency.

I sat down with a sigh.

We did need the extra body though. When someone called in sick or if there was some kind of emergency, we were spread much too thin for my liking.

I skimmed through Saif's resume again.

The others who'd applied weren't nearly as qualified.

But did I want to hire someone that made me feel like he might be a little shifty? Never mind the fact that he would most definitely be distracting around the office.

I scrubbed my face, knowing I was a jerk for even taking that second one into consideration.

    Sheriff?

I looked up as Melissa opened the door, her face worried, the perpetual smile gone.

    What is it?

I just got a call from Blake's wife. He was in a car accident.

When I walked into the hospital room that night, it was to see Blake propped up on a mountain of pillows with his leg in traction and an apologetic look on his face.

    Sorry, Sheriff.

I shook my head in exasperation.

What's there to be sorry about? Accidents happen all the time, I said, walking over to give his wife Tina a hug.

He should be sorry, she interjected, hugging me back. I told him not to speed on that road.

And you were right, Blake admitted, holding out his hand for his wife. She took it, even as she muttered something I was sure was uncomplimentary under her breath. I'm never going to live this down, am I? he asked wryly.

Nope, Tina said, her voice harsh, but the worry still clear in her eyes.

You take as much time off as you need, I reassured him as I sat down in a vacant visitor's chair.

I'm really sorry to leave you in the lurch like this. I'm never speeding again.

I grinned, knowing that probably wouldn't stick.

Honestly, I was also smiling out of relief. He was obviously going to be fine.

I stayed for a little while, but then left when his parents showed up from out of town, not wanting to intrude on their family time.

As I walked to the elevator, I realized my decision had basically been made for me.

    Well shit.

When I got back to the office, I pulled out Saif's contact and gave him a ring.

It was after business hours, but it wasn't too late.

    Hello?

    Saif Basra?

    Yes?

This is Sheriff Booker Marino. Are you available to start tomorrow?

    Saif

I hung up the phone, genuinely surprised that Booker had hired me.

    And so quickly.

My read of people was usually pretty accurate. And my impression of the Sheriff had been that there was something about me he didn't like.

I wondered what had changed his mind.

Or if he really did just need the extra body that much.

    It was possible.

Sunnyvale couldn't be called a city, but it didn't quite fit into the small town category either- it was stuck somewhere in the middle.

It still held onto its small town feel, though the fact that it was becoming a fun weekend getaway for city dwellers meant it would probably continue to grow at a steady rate.

But my best guess was despite its not so small size, the police department didn't have a lot of funding to go around.

Still, how much effort could a town this size take to police? I'd spent most of my working life in the big city, where there was something nefarious going on somewhere on every block.

This should be a piece of cake.

And in my down time, I would be able to work on what I was actually here for.

    Chapter 2

    Saif

Ma'am, I cannot fine someone for that, I repeated patiently.

But man, were my edges fraying.

He just sits and watches Pookie through the gap in the fence! He's a predator, just waiting for his chance to defile my poor puppy!

I looked over at the obviously senior dog, her fluffy white fur caught up in too many pink bows to count.

She had a look of long suffering on her resigned face.

I should fine Mabel Holt for torturing her own pet. It had to be a crime to make a dog look that ridiculous.

Has the dog ever attacked? I asked again.

Well...no. But I know he's just waiting for his chance!

    I sighed.

    "I'll tell you what, ma'am. I'll have a
