About this ebook

WARNING: Contains high impact horror and mature themes. Discretion is advised.

With a spiked arm swinging by her side, and followed by the skittering, spidery Gelnora, Zorana charged toward the mountain where the bat-monster Temel and the mercenary Essi eyed each other cautiously. The monster and the mercenary would have no choice but to work together, especially with the vengeful Zorana moving ever closer.

Will they be able to strike a blow against the Agrising Comminate? Or have they underestimated the strength of ... the Spire?

A flash of light highlighted the dark clouds from within. It retreated as fast as it appeared, overwhelmed by the thick formless shadow that eclipsed the night sky. The storm growled, rumbling the twisted castle below.

Zorana paid it no mind. The small fence shook before the grumble of the coming storm. Zorana clenched her fist. Her arm was composed of tiny interlocking tubes. Spines erupted from the spaces between them, spiralling into sharp points.

She swept her arm in front of her, shattering the fence as if it were made of cheap glass.

The spines retreated. She looked up at the mountain in front of her. The face of the mountain inclined sharply upwards, peppered with sharp rocks.

Think you're safe, do you? Hidden in the breast of the mountain. I've faced tougher challenges.

Essi … if you think you're going to get away just because Gelnora wants you alive, then you've got another thing coming.

Zorana trudged toward the increasingly rocky ground.

There was a crunch behind her. Followed by another.

Zorana clenched her fist. Spines crept out as something hissed at her. What was that?

She turned to see large figures creeping closer. They were humanoid, with featureless faces and toothless maws, each with a muscular proboscis where the tongue ought to have been. Their weirdly large hands and feet balanced by a short, flat tail.

One of them whispered. Where am I? Who goes there?

Zorana glared as they slunk around her, gauging their prey. She glanced around as they circled her. You don't scare me.

One of them imitated a terrified gasp. What the hell is that?

Another let out a shriek. Save me, God!

Zorana tensed her arm. The spikes on her forearm grew. God can't save you now.

One of them made a warbling laugh and struggled to pick out the words from the catalogue it had recycled from its victims. No … it …. can't.

Zorana whipped about, her arm-spines slashing through the air. The beasts reeled back. An uppercut knocked one into the air. Her other hand moved on instinct; it slid around her revolver and aimed it another monster.

One of them snarled. You can't get me in here!

Another whispered. How do I get out?

Zorana blinked. They were already charging.

She scraped her hand along the ground, kicking up blinding dust in the dark. The monsters stomped as they moved – while they were peering through the dust, she heard exactly where they were. The large, loping monsters whipped more dust about with every ungainly swing.

She, however, danced through the dust, her body an instrument: her firearm sang, her gun percussed, her arm strummed.

Bloody and snarling, the monsters staggered away.

    Zorana leaped out
