    Black Dragon - Madison Keller

    Part 1

Sybil sat a bottle of ale in front of each member of Jasper’s mercenary crew. The last bottle went in front of the empty chair for the last member, who hadn't arrived yet. She turned to go when Jasper whistled at her.

Sybil turned back to him, crossing her arms and swinging out one hip. What.

Sit. He pointed to the empty chair.

But, when you said five, I assumed Pou—

Nope, I want you for this job.

Me? Sybil said, sliding down to sit in the fifth chair. Jasper's offer both surprised and frightened her. Jasper rubbed his hands together and leaned forward, eyes gleaming. I just heard the sweetest rumor. If we move fast before others jump on this opportunity, we'll never have to work again.

Sybil raised her eyebrows and sat back. Devron snorted and pulled a flask out of his vest, taking a long swig. Tutu scratched at his unkempt beard and shrugged. Only Xi, the half-elf mage and Jasper’s best friend, looked excited, eyes gleaming against his pale skin as he leaned towards Jasper, grinning and rubbing his hands together.

So, is it stupid, dangerous, or both? Sybil finally asked as the silence drew out.

Jasper glared at her and she knew she was going to pay for that comment later. Sybil dropped her eyes to her lap and folded her hands, which was enough to placate him for now. "I thought you all would be
