Irregular mounds of cracked stone littered the clearing in the forest. Archways and segments of walls had survived, poking out of the sea of stones like panicked, drowning swimmers. At the edges of the rubble were the remains of wardrobes and beds, which had managed to avoid being completely crushed.

Hunched figures crawled out of the forest. The humanoids moved carefully with their oversized hands and feet. They collected in a circle around one mound of rubble, glancing at one another.

They opened their toothless mouths and raised their hands to the sky. They hissed and spat at the stars.

The ground shook as they slammed their forearms into the rubble. Blood seeped from the self-inflicted wounds. They tore at their bodies, ripping away black flesh, red blood cascading into the gaps beneath.

Each one let out one final hiss before collapsing onto the ground. The blood ran over the rocks, toward the centre of the circle they'd made. It seeped down into the darkness.

    All was quiet and still.

The rocks shifted. Bloody fingers poked out from the blackness. They curled up and spikes spiralled from its palm, shattering the rock.

Zorana pulled herself out from the rocks, caked in blood. She stumbled to her feet on the unstable ground.

In spite of the ruins and the stillness of the night, there was still an ineffable feeling of dread. Even with the castle destroyed, the Comminate was still out there, in some way, shape or form.

She could feel its twisted will in the shadows, but its power was weak. Bringing her back was a one-time deal. But it was a good deal, nonetheless. She knew what it wanted; she was now a Maledict, after all.

Zorana flicked blood from her arms and brushed it off her torn clothing. She certainly looked the part of someone who'd just crawled out of a collapsed castle.

She took a step and tripped, tumbling down the rubble and hitting grass. With a groan she got to her feet. Something was distracting her – throwing her off balance. It was a like she was both dreaming and awake.

She grabbed onto a tree and took a few steps. There was a part of her brain that was convinced the ground wasn't even there. The feeling was like she was in several places at once, each one giving
