Prologue
Distant bird calls echoed through the chilling air in these deep woods. A small group of First Nation hunters made their way through the dark pines as a wet thick fog floated through the black forest. They fanned out through the underbrush. Stepping over dead and broken branches. Twisted logs. Dew dripped from their down jackets. Soaking them. They tightly clutched their rifles. One loaded his double-barrel shotgun.
An old native chief, Yellow Dog put his red hand against his worn leather cheek. Making another call. Chirping like a bird. Calling out to all in the forest. Keeping his hunting party on track. He pointed. Ahead. To the deepest darkest part.
The natives responded. Answering in silent hand signals. They were on a most dangerous hunt. The element of surprise was essential.
It also ended. Here and now.
There came a terrible cry. Hideous. It echoed through the wind. Sent a violent gust through them. Sending shivers down their spines. Drenching them with fear. The hunters froze in their tracks.
What little remained of the sun. Disappeared.
It was too late. She knew they were coming.
They braced themselves against logs, others rock, some behind trees. The wind whipped up the forest debris. Howling through them. Taking aim.
The hideous cry repeated. So much closer now, almost on top of them.
A few of the hunters looked at one another's white knuckles, trying to keep their hands from shaking.
A low rumbling could be heard. Shaking the forest floor. The ground trembled.
Old Yellow chief yelled out.
They all aimed with their weapons.
Out of the brush, dozens of different woodland animals appeared frantically
