Chapter One

Cold.

Ice dug in between my pads with every step. It slithered under my skin and embedded into my veins. Every sluggish beat of my frozen heart pushed it deeper into my body until the chill smothered my mind. There, behind the block of ice, was where I kept my emotions. And if a crack started to form, I put on the fur and ran.

While in wolf form, it was rare for the real cold to reach through my heavy fur. But as I leapt over a tree dusted with so much powdery snow it looked like a chocolate shop’s yule log, the wind struck me. I blinked, my human mind powering through the limited colors of the wolf to focus on the dark shadows creeping across the forest floor. The winter sun was fading fast and I shouldn’t be out here alone.

I raised my snout, taking a deep whiff. My claws clenched through the frozen dirt as my brain lit up with the smell of diesel and gun powder. The scents barely lingered, wiped away on the same thoughtless wind, but the buckshot lodged in the trees told me enough. The cult was venturing deeper into the forest. Who was leading them?

Light burst from the dark forest, cutting a swathe through the naked trees. A whimper rose from my throat, the wolf wanting to scamper back. But I stared longer, watching it catch against the reflective
