    The Diary

Macallan was clutching the diary, standing beside the car.

Back in Santa Ana. They had made it home. He pulled their suitcases out and they headed to the front porch. Past the mason brick mailbox.

All the while Davion ran around him his arms extended like an aeroplane. Circling. Playing. Macallan was unsure how to take all this. It had been longer than he cared to remember. Child-rearing? Davion jumped off the porch towards Macallan's prize rose bush.

    Careful! Macallan admonished.

But Davion paid him no mind as boys sometimes do and ran across the front lawn. Disappearing.

Macallan was struggling with the key in the door lock. He smiled weakly at Madalena. It seemed to become a habit. His trouble with keys.

When from the side of the house there came a scream.

    Davion's scream.

Madalena gasped. Macallan dropping the suitcases.

Brandy! I left her tied up. She must've gotten loose.

Macallan running after Madalena who followed the screams frantically to the other side.

Another scream from Davion. They turned the corner.

Davion screams of jubilation as the shepherd was jumping all over him, licking him, knocking him down, a boy and his dog playing.

Madalena was laughing. Macallan stood there stunned.

That dog hates everybody, He said.

    ***

The California sun was crossing an orange sky. Fire’s in the canyon had turned the city to a strange hellish hue more akin to Hades than a one-time city of angels.

Davion running through the backyard, through his garden, being chased by Brandy. He jumped over the roses much to Macallan's dismay. Brandy barking.

Macallan watched from the other side of a windowpane.

    Oh, Madalena? Madalena? Macallan worried.

Boy, and Brandy tearing through his garden. Macallan leant forward

pressing against the glass. Groaning. Watching petals falling.

    Madalena! He shouted.

    Madalena walked up yawning.

Macallan turned startled to see her standing so close.

Oh? You know I was thinking.
