CHAPTER ONE
Michael
MICHAEL SAT ON THE edge of the drive, his body rocking and eyes scanning the street as he waited for his dad. His toes curled and pinched the short spiked blades. Waiting for his dad to pull in, he plucked away with both feet and fingers as he formed small BBs that he tossed into the road.
Michael, tired of sitting in this one area for almost an hour began to mumble to himself, When will he be here?
His agitation grew by the minute. I need to talk to him. Why is he so late?
The sun dropped below the tree line and stripes of pink and purple were stretched across the horizon.
With a loud sigh, Michael’s shoulders slumped and his backbone bowed almost in half. His little body drooped more and more by the minute. When he heard the crunch of tires on the drive, Michael stood up quickly. Finally! Dad’s home.
As he trotted along beside the car as it pulled into its usual spot next to the closed garage door, He smiled and his steps lightened. I can talk to Dad and he’ll fix this mess.
Hi, Dad! Gah, where have you been? I have been out here all day waiting on you.
He bounced up and down then hopped over to the car door, just as his dad stepped out of the car. Michael’s arms and legs, freckled from the sun, were peeking out from his tan shorts and his favorite sky blue T-shirt with the dragon eating a popsicle on the front.
Bob McKay reached out and tousled his son’s bright red hair and pulled him in for a side hug. Hey, Michael, What’s going on? I don’t usually get this welcome.
Without a breath, he added, Did I win the lottery? Wait, are you saying you didn’t go to school?
He continued to ask questions before Michael could answer. What about career day? What about the uniform your mom helped you make?
Laughing as he and Michael headed to the front door, his dad’s mind was abuzz, What’s going on? When I left this morning Michael was busily getting dressed in the outfit for Career Day. Something is definitely going on.
Michael looked up at his dad. Squinted his blue eyes and scrunched his nose and lips into an intense frown. I’ve got a problem dad. I don’t know what to do.
His voice was shaky as he stepped from one foot to the other. While he swayed as though on the deck of a ship, his dad watched him closely. His dad could still see the outline of his red lips and the white makeup caked near his left ear.
Go wash your face and give me a sec. I just got here, let me talk to your mom a minute then I am all yours, deal?
Michael nodded and stood to one side as his dad walked into the
