Leaving Lightfoot and Slicko talking together in the woods, we will go back a little while and see what is happening in the shanty near the rocks, where Mike Malony lived with his widowed mother. Mike came in one day, after a long search through the park. Though it was several weeks since Lightfoot had run away the boy never gave up hope that, some day, he would find his pet.
“Well, Mike me lad, did you hear anything of your goat?” asked Mrs. Malony. “No, Mother,” was the answer, “and I don’t believe I ever shall. Lightfoot is gone forever.”
“Oh, don’t say that, Mike! He may come back. And if he doesn’t, can’t you take one of the other goats and train it to drag a cart?”
“No,” said Mike, with a shake of his head, “I couldn’t do that. The other goats are for giving milk, and the like of that, but they wouldn’t be like Lightfoot for drawing the children. No goat will be like Lightfoot to me. I’ll have to get work at something else, I guess, Mother.”
