    Chapter One

    March—in like a lion dressed as a lamb.

    Kane had never been to heaven, but he just knew Claudia would fit right in up there. Such a pure, sweet voice belonged in an angel choir, and the soft, happy look she got whenever she strummed her guitar was itself angelic. He clasped his hands behind his head and kicked his feet up on the armrest of the sofa as he watched the girl who had unequivocally changed his life. It helped she never became self-conscious under his gaze.

    Having a blind girlfriend had its perks.

    Claudia brought the music to a close and smiled, her focus floating over the room as if gazing over a meadow of wildflowers.

    I like that song, he declared.

    She set her guitar to the side. You like every song I sing.

    You make every song likeable.

    That brought a laugh from her. She found her way to the couch and knelt next to Kane, touching his face. He kissed her fingers when they crossed his lips. I guess I should get back, he said. But he didn’t move. He lifted a hand and traced the little groove of concentration that always appeared in the middle of her brow whenever she explored something with her hands, which right now included his neck and shoulders.

    I have something for you before you go. Her fingers tracked one last line up his throat to his chin, then searched the coffee table until they found a brown paper bag. Kane opened it when she handed it to him and pulled out a denim blue cap with a downward pointing bill.

    You got me a welding cap?

    You said your baseball cap got in the way, but without it sparks got in your hair.

    Claude... He sat up and placed the hat on his head. You didn’t have to do this. I could’ve have gone to the store and gotten one myself. A task that would’ve been much easier for him than her.

    She waved a hand. I just happened upon this. It was an impulse buy.

    Kane chuckled and shook his head. Unlike the majority of the seeing world, who bought things simply because they could see them on the rack, Claudia rarely bought anything on impulse. If she brought home an item from the store, it was because she’d searched for it deliberately—and probably required the assistance of a sales
