    Chapter 9

    Surgery

    Tobias had come to. To find himself in a dark room. A single light shone down on him. He could feel the warmth of it against the coolness of the darkness.

    Where am I?

    Knowing instinctively this wasn't the lab.

    Had Whitcomb locked me away? Deep somewhere ashamed of what had happened?

    The undoing of his science. Almost the undoing of his self. It made him shudder. He looked up into Whitcomb's eyes and did see something he hadn't seen before. Uncertainty.

    Good news Tobias, your new hand is almost ready.

    Tobias moaned. It had brought it all back to him. A look now at his stub. How he had hoped it was all just a bad dream? But it wasn't.

    We're ready to attempt to re-attach

    Attempt? Tobias was surprised. Concerned even. His head turned upright direct to Whitcomb.

    This was the first time he had ever used the word, attempt, in his vocabulary. Accomplish would have been more fitting. Definitely what I wanted to hear, especially when it came to surgery with me hand, mate. And—

    We?

    I'm not an expert. Whitcomb's eyes stared carefully back at him. In this surgery such as yours. I, however, know someone who is accomplished and you deserve the best. And you know him as well, thankfully.

    What? Whom? Tobias was doubly pained.

    Doctor Jean-Paul Gauthier, he's on his way from Paris as we speak. Whitcomb with a reassuring smile.

    No, Tobias couldn't believe he was hearing this. This was the worst possible outcome. He would be found
