    Chapter 9

Mary gathered up the plates. The ham half ate still left in the centre. Near an untouched place setting.

That's funny. Father Mackenzie smiled almost to himself.

    What? Murray asked interested.

‘Eleanor Rigby’ just popped into my head.

I used to love The Beatles. Murray reminisced. When I first was seeing Mary, they were ‘it.’

Mary smiled. Overhearing as she continued to clear the dining room table.

I used to loathe that song. Father Mackenzie confessed. Now I accept it for what it is, not an admonition of my failures, but one hell of a string arrangement.

    Murray laughed.

The two men stood at the giant picture window watching the sky.

Perhaps we get a gust? Murray noticed.

If it’s not to much trouble. Give me some dippy to go. Father Mackenzie shouted back.

Already done. She returned from the kitchen.

Bless you. Father Mackenzie said half-joking then with a confession of his own. I love dippy bread.

    Murray smiled.

I'm sorry about Brendan. He winced.

An eye on the empty table setting.

It's not your fault. Mackenzie offered.

He's usually quite good about these things. Never misses Sunday dinner and I know he's quite fond of you. Murray with a glance Mackenzie’s way.

And I him. Father Mackenzie stared straight on. Old iron horse himself. He turned with a knowing look back to Murray.

Did you? Murray began. Deny him the sacrament?

    Mackenzie exhaled.

Mary appeared from the kitchen wiping her hands with a dishtowel from her shoulder. Waiting for Father Mackenzie's answer.

That might explain his boycott, wouldn't it? Father Mackenzie suggested.
