My father and mother emigrated from Poland to the United States in the late 1890s. They both worked in factories, saved their paychecks religiously, and then bought a small farm near Suffield, Conn. That was where I started my musical education.
Every spring my father got out his plow, hitched it up to an old horse named Nellie, and plowed the field to plant corn for the few cows that he had.
