About this ebook

Jeff and Kenzie have had a perfect wedding reception, and the Dwyer family is now whole again. Jeff and his sons couldnt be happier. As the school year approaches, is Alecks biggest problem jitters at the prospect of being away from his new mother? Or is it dealing with the returning bully? These things are normal and could happen to anyone. But Alecks situation turns out to be far from normal. When Aleck is seriously injured in an accident during a class, forcing Jeff and Kenzie to come and investigate, the evidence that Kenzie discovers suggests that this apparent accident is actually part of a bigger plan concocted by none other than Cam Rowan and the real target is Jeff. When Rowan decides to take more direct action to get what he wants, Kenzie, despite having retired as an operative, must once again use her skills to find Rowan and protect those she loves. Kenzies adversaries discover that she will do whatever it takes to defend her family, like a mother panther protecting her cubs, including deadly force if necessary.

    The Reception

Macy St. Clair and Maya Tavares appointed themselves as hostesses and led the guests to their seats at the tables to everyone’s amusement. The two preteens had become fast friends during the week before the wedding, much to the delight of their parents.

Did we seat everyone? Maya wanted to know.

Macy looked around. I think… , she trailed off, spotting two people. Nope. We got two more.

    Who?

    Daddy and Mrs. McDermont.

Maya frowned. But all the tables are filled.

Not all. There’s the table where Aunt Kenzie, Uncle Jeff, Mommy, and Mr. McDermont are sitting. Let’s check it out.

The two girls hurried over to the head table, checking out the place cards.

I found Daddy’s place, Macy said.

And I found Mrs. McDermont’s place, Maya replied.

    Let’s go get them!

    The two girls dashed off.

Tanner St. Clair stood near Naomi McDermont; both a bit puzzled.

    What’s wrong? Tanner asked.

I couldn’t find my place, Naomi answered.

Same here. I know that Kenzie said that there was a seat for everyone, but I don’t see how, considering that all the tables are full.

Daddy! Macy called out, stopping in front of the two adults with Maya next to her.

Macy? Shouldn’t you and Maya be in your seats?

We’ve been showing everyone to their seats.

And we’re going to take you and Mrs. McDermont to your seats, Maya continued.

But there aren’t any more places, Tanner pointed out.

C’mon, Macy urged and took a hold of her father’s hand, leading him to the head table while Maya did the same with Naomi.

Both adults were surprised to find their names at the head table as was evident by their amazed looks. Each took a seat.

I see that everyone is seated, Tucker Peterson, the DJ, said over the microphone. Thanks to our two wonderful little hostesses: Macy and Maya!

Applause broke out as both girls blushed, hurrying to their seats.

Great job, girls, Tucker continued. Okay, I believe that it’s time for some introductions. He stepped around his setup and extended his hand. First off, the bride’s parents: Luke and Raquel St. Clair!

Luke escorted Raquel past Tucker across the dance floor to their seats amid the applause.

Next are the groom’s parents: Edmund and Rose Dwyer!

There was more applause as Edmund escorted Rose to their seats near Luke and Raquel. The two sets of parents hugged and shook hands with one another, all of them beaming with happiness.

Now the best man: Frank McDermont!

Frank came out and stood next to Tucker, pushing up his glasses as he flushed slightly at the applause.

And of course, the matron of honor: Carissa St. Clair!

Carissa walked out to loud clapping. As she walked over to Tucker, Frank held out his elbow, which she took, and the two walked to the head table where their respective spouses were seated.

Now, I know that this is the moment that you’ve all been waiting for. Everyone please stand. Tucker waited until everyone was up on their feet. It’s my honor and pleasure to introduce to you for the very first time in public the bride and groom, Jeff and Kenzie Dwyer!

The pavilion exploded with applause, whistles, squeals, and hoots as Jeff and Kenzie, holding hands, made their way to the dance floor near Tucker.

Let me offer both of you congratulations on your marriage, Tucker began. I hope that you have a very happy and long marriage together.

Thank you, Tucker, Jeff replied, then pulled Kenzie close for a soft kiss.

Now, don’t run away. It’s time for your first dance. Tucker went around to his setup. Jeff, why don’t you take your lovely bride to the center of the dance floor?

Jeff led Kenzie onto the dance floor.

I don’t know how to dance, Jeff, Kenzie said quietly.

He drew her against him as the music began. That’s okay. Just follow my lead, honey, he told her.

Kenzie slipped her arms around Jeff’s neck. They smiled into each other’s eyes as they moved slowly across the dance floor.

About halfway through the song, Tucker announced, Everyone, grab your guy or gal and join Jeff and Kenzie on the dance floor.

Several couples joined the bride and groom on the dance floor until the end of the song. Some of the couples seated themselves as another slow song came on.

Kenzie saw Tanner and Carissa start back toward the head table. She turned to her husband. Jeff, I need to… dance with Tanner. I was unable to stay for his and Carissa’s reception back when they got married, she told him.

Of course, honey, he replied. I’ll dance with Carissa.

Thank you. She kissed him softly. Tanner! she called.

Tanner stopped. Yeah, sis? he replied.

    May I have this dance?

Sure. He grinned, leading his sister back onto the dance floor.

Jeff looked at Carissa, motioning to the dance floor. Shall we? he asked.

Carissa grinned. Of course. I never pass up the chance to dance with the groom when I go to a wedding, she replied with a laugh.

Jeff chuckled as the two made their way back to the dance floor.

As they were dancing, Kenzie gave Tanner a small sad smile.

Hey, what’s wrong, sis? he asked.

I’m so sorry that I couldn’t dance with you at your wedding reception, Tanner, she told him.

You came to the wedding, though I’m surprised that they let you attend at all. But I understand why you couldn’t stay. He gave her a smile. Besides, we’re dancing now.

Yes, but still… , she trailed off.

Sis, Tanner interrupted. I never held any of that against you. Trust me when I tell you that we were all thrilled just to spend what little time we could with you back then. Okay? He grinned at her.

    Kenzie nodded, smiling softly.

Tanner gave Kenzie a kiss on the forehead as brother and sister danced to the end of the song. They headed back to the main table to join the rest of the wedding party.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages, Tucker began, getting everyone’s attention. Waiters and waitresses will be coming around with appetizers. He paused as one of the waiters stopped in front of him and offered a platter of finger foods to him. He took one, popping it into his mouth, chewing it. Mmmm… and they’re good too. Enjoy! Tucker took two more, nodding his thanks as the waiter moved on.

After sampling a few of the many hors d’oeuvres that were being offered, Xavier Caine made his way over to Jeff and Kenzie, walking around the table to talk to them. Ben Rycroft followed a pace or two behind. Tanner eyed both men warily as they approached.

Kenzie rose to her feet as Jeff stood next to her, slipping his arm around his new bride.

Kenzie. Jeff. I just want to tell you that this is a wonderful reception, Xavier said with a rare smile on his face.

It sure is, kid, Ben concurred.

The former female government operative rolled her eyes slightly in an amused fashion at Ben’s nickname for her.

Jeff smiled. You’re quite welcome, but I think that you should be thanking Mr. LeMack. He, after all, did this for us, he told them.

Don’t sell yourselves short, Xavier began. He may have paid the bills, but you two planned and implemented everything.

Thank you, then, Jeff answered, glancing around. It seems that everyone is having a good time.

Ben grinned. I know I am, he said.

Kenzie smiled softly. I’m glad that you are, Ben, she commented. A sad look suddenly crossed her delicate features.

Jeff caught her expression. Kenz, is something wrong? His voice sounded concerned.

Xavier also caught the expression but said nothing. He glanced aside at Ben, seeing a similar expression on the big bodyguard’s face.

I was just thinking that… , Kenzie trailed off, composing herself. I’m sorry. I just realized that this will be the last time that I will see any of you, especially… Ben.

Jeff hugged Kenzie gently. He realized that Kenzie was going to find retiring from what she used to do a great deal harder than she initially thought.

Xavier rubbed his chin thoughtfully. I’m not so sure of that, he stated.

What do you mean? I’m retired now, she pointed out.

Well, Mr. LeMack did tell you that you’ll always have the agency’s resources at your disposal. Even though he said that in an official way, I’m fairly sure he doesn’t want you to be a stranger. And as for the resources, well, there’s one resource of the agency that I think you’ll have an immediate use for. In fact, that’s the real reason I came over here.

Kenzie looked at Jeff, slightly puzzled, then back at Xavier. What reason, Xavier?

Xavier enjoyed the fact that for once, he had Kenzie at a disadvantage. Once you begin your new life away from the agency, you’re going to have your hands full. And you’ll have a family to worry about in addition to yourself. You still have all your skills, and you’re very good at what you do. In fact, there’s nobody better. But you still can’t be in more than one place at a time. And… certain adversaries… are still lurking out there. Sooner or later, you’re going to need this resource. That’s my wedding gift to you. He clamped a hand on one of Ben’s broad shoulders and smiled. A bodyguard.

Ben turned to stare at his boss. "What? Mr. Caine? You no longer… need me?" Ben wanted to know. Not only did he sound surprised, but a bit hurt as well.

Oh, I certainly do, Ben. But Kenzie and Jeff need you more.

The big bodyguard leaned toward his boss. What if they don’t want me? he questioned softly.

They are always at liberty to return this gift, just as they can anyone else’s gifts. Kenzie won’t hold back if that’s how she feels. But I’m fairly sure that won’t happen, he whispered back.

Hearing them, Kenzie spoke, I’ll only accept if both Jeff and Ben agree.

Jeff rubbed his chin with his free hand. Xavier is right about who’s lurking out there, he conceded. He’s already tried several times, and he won’t give up. We’re all targets. I agree.

Well, this was a surprise for me, but you need all the allies you can get with that lunatic out there. I agree as well, Ben said.

Kenzie smiled softly. In that case, Xavier, I… we accept, she stated.

Just don’t unwrap it, Ben cracked, a smile on his face.

Oh, there’s only one gift I want to unwrap. Kenzie smiled suggestively at Jeff.

Jeff caught Kenzie’s look and cleared his throat, blushing slightly. Yes, well, I’ve been having similar thoughts too, honey, he replied, smiling back.

And that’s our cue to head back to our table, Xavier cut in. We can work out the details later.

Absolutely. And… thank you, Jeff responded.

    Thank you, Xavier, Kenzie echoed.

Xavier’s hazel eyes softened briefly as he looked at the woman that he’d known since she was a little girl. He honestly never had considered that Kenzie’s emotions would resurface and she would fall in love with a man. Looking at her with Jeff Dwyer, he realized that she was now whole. You’re both very welcome, he said with a smile. He leaned over and gave Kenzie a kiss on the cheek, then headed over to the bar with Ben in tow.

Tanner stood up. Sis? he said in a worried tone.

    Yes? Kenzie said.

I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but what… lunatic was that man talking about? Concern laced his voice.

Kenzie laid a hand on her brother’s shoulder. I understand and appreciate your concern, but it’s best that you don’t know anything about whom we were speaking. It’s for everyone’s safety. She paused. This person was the main reason why I visited… rarely. I wanted… needed to keep everyone safe. And I still do… until that person is no longer a threat.

So, that person’s still… at large?

I’m afraid so, Tanner, and just as elusive. I’m sorry that I’m being… cryptic, but I just want to keep you, your family, and our parents safe.

    I understand, sis. Thanks.

Kenzie gently squeezed his shoulder and nodded. She reseated herself at the table.

Jeff looked at his brother-in-law. Tanner, she loves all of you very much. It would devastate her if anything happens to any of you. A flash of memory came to Jeff at that moment. He focused back on Tanner. If something does happen, I don’t believe that there would be a power on this Earth that could stop her from going after this person, Jeff explained. So let’s just hope that it doesn’t come to that.

    Tanner nodded. I understand, Jeff.

The two men smiled and returned to sit with their respective spouses.

As they were waiting their turn at the bar, Ben leaned over to Xavier.

You know, Mr. Caine, it would’ve been nice to ask me if I wanted to be the Dwyers’ bodyguard, Ben said.

Ben, how often does a gift have a chance to be as surprised as the recipient? Xavier wanted to know, a slight smile on his face.

    Little to none, I wager.

Just consider this a resource allocation, something I’m responsible for.

Are you doing this so that I can keep tabs on them for you? Ben frowned slightly.

    Absolutely not, Ben!

"I’m sorry, Mr. Caine. I’m just confused. If you still need me, then why give me to the Dwyers?" Ben looked at his boss, evidently confused.

Xavier leaned a bit closer to Ben, lowering his voice. Because the Global Relief technology is the one thing that Cam Rowan wants more than anything else. And because of that, it’s the one thing we cannot afford to let him have. Besides, you’re the one who is the best qualified to make sure of that. Look at it this way: you’re not leaving the agency; you’re going on an extended assignment.

The two men paused in their conversation upon giving their drink order to the bartender. After getting their drinks, they headed back to their table, continuing their conversation.

So once Rowan is taken care of, I’m back then. But it won’t be easy to get him. It’ll probably take years, Ben stated.

Xavier looked thoughtful. Possibly. But it’s also possible that Rowan will make a move that will expose him, he replied.

Ben nodded. True. I hope that Jeff’s boys won’t have a problem with me being with all of them. Hell, I don’t even know where they live!

Jeff and Kenzie accepted you, so you will find out where they live. If for some reason any member of the family has an issue with you being there, there’s no obligation to keep you on, Xavier explained.

Ben looked thoughtful. Good point. I guess it would be to my advantage to get to know his sons, starting tomorrow, since we’re all here for another week.

They arrived at their table but didn’t seat themselves yet.

Good idea. I imagine Jeff and Kenzie will inform them first since they would probably not believe it if it came from you first, Xavier pointed out.

Very true. Ben looked at his boss curiously. So, who are you going to get to replace me? he wanted to know.

I do have someone in mind to fill in while you’re on your extended assignment. Xavier looked at Ben. And I would like your input on my choice.

    Who?

    Logan Masters.

Ben grunted. Didn’t he retire after he was injured and unable to save his partner from being killed? His expression darkened slightly, remembering whom Logan and his partner had gone up against.

He did, but now he’s ready to do something. However, he doesn’t want to be an operative. So when I asked him, he accepted.

You’ll be in good hands. We started training together.

Xavier smiled. I know. So, why don’t we enjoy the rest of this incredible reception?

    Ben grinned broadly. Yes, sir.

The two men seated themselves at the table with the rest of their colleagues.

Vance looked over at Slade and shook his head. Unlike himself, Jonah, and the three young ladies at the table—Melanie Winters, Sierra Westbrook, and Bridget Willoughby—none of them had their little plates filled like Slade did.

Slade caught his brother’s movement and frowned. What? he wanted to know, then popped a chicken tender in his mouth, chewing it.

Mind leaving some for the rest of us? Vance requested.

Slade swallowed. There’s plenty for everyone. They just keep coming out with more.

Dinner will be out in a little while.

No worries. I’ve got room. He grinned at Vance.

Do you have room in your arteries for all those chicken tenders? Jonah piped up, slipping an arm around Melanie’s shoulders.

I’ll burn it all off. Besides, I’ve got it balanced with all those vegetables.

You mean all those stuffed mushroom caps? Jonah pointed out.

    Baby carrots!

Glazed with butter and brown sugar, Melanie informed him.

Slade frowned slightly. Well… cauliflower, then.

Melanie sighed, shaking her head slightly. It’s no use, Jonah. He’s got an answer for everything.

Slade gave everyone a huge, triumphant grin. Another waiter came by with a tray of little pizzas. Slade started to reach for a couple but stopped, seeing the expressions on his younger brothers’ faces.

Um, no more, thank you. I’ll wait for dinner, Slade told the waiter.

The waiter nodded and moved on to the next table.

So, does anyone want anything to drink?

Jonah looked at Melanie, who nodded. Melanie and I will have some white wine, he told his older brother.

Red wine for me, Sierra replied.

Fruit punch for me, Vance said sourly, looking disappointed.

Slade looked at the middle Dwyer brother. You’ll be legal in a month, bro, he assured Vance, then looked over at Bridget. You want anything, Bridget? he asked.

Um, just a seltzer with lime, please, she replied in a quiet voice.

You got it. Be back shortly. Slade headed over to the bar.

    *   *   *

Luke gazed over at the head table and absently wiped one of his eyes. His wife, Raquel, caught his movement. She laid a hand on his arm.

Luke dear. Are you okay? she wanted to know.

Oh, sure I am, honey bun, Luke replied. I just never thought that we’d see this day.

What? Jeff and Kenzie getting married? Edmund asked.

Luke cleared his throat. Well, neither of us ever thought that Kenzie would meet anyone as perfect for her as Jeff. He shook his head. "I meant I thought we’d never see the day that Kenzie would marry… well… anyone."

Well, surely Kenzie dated. I mean, she’s absolutely beautiful. She was probably never without a date, Rose stated.

Luke glanced at Raquel, who gave a little nod. I never knew exactly what they did to her, but from what I understand, they made her bury her emotions. She wasn’t supposed to be interested in any kind of romantic attachments, even the most casual. Dating would’ve gotten in the way of her work.

Edmund looked appalled. What kind of government job forces people to bury their emotions? he wanted to know.

Luke didn’t want to lie to Edmund, but he also couldn’t tell him the truth. No, that had to come from Kenzie when the time was right. We weren’t told specifics. But on the rare occasions when we were allowed to see her, she seemed to have some cuts, bruises, and other minor injuries, but she would never divulge anything to us. Kenzie was always extremely strong and intelligent, so I guess that wouldn’t happen, unless the work was somehow, well, dangerous.

Dangerous? Edmund shook his head. If she was that valuable, I’m surprised that they let her retire.

Kenzie and Jeff told me that they didn’t allow it right away. It took both of them to convince her superiors. I still don’t know how they did it, but I’m extremely grateful.

Rose looked concerned. Should we be worried about the influence that she has on our grandsons… especially Aleck? He’s so young and impressionable.

Edmund patted his wife’s hand. Now, dear, I don’t think we need to worry. Aleck is quite taken by her. And the others are grown, or practically grown, he assured her.

And from what I’ve seen, they all love her and she loves them, Luke put in.

And I don’t believe that Jeff would allow his sons to be influenced by anything bad, Edmund added.

Luke nodded. Kenzie has a good heart… now that she has it back. Thanks to Jeff and his sons.

And Jeff’s found real love, thanks to Kenzie, Rose stated.

A thoughtful look crossed Edmund’s face as they all nodded in agreement.

Bruce and Aylin Dwyer leaned against the railing that surrounded both pavilions, looking out over the ocean and the gentle waves that hit the shore. Bruce turned slightly to face his wife, when his gaze fell on the newlyweds at the head table. He shook his head a little.

    Bruce? Aylin said.

    Yes, sweetie? Bruce replied.

You know, I was thinking that it was awfully nice of Jeff and Kenzie to invite us to their wedding despite the disagreements that you and Jeff have had.

Bruce nodded. Yes, it was. In fact, I was surprised. I understand why he didn’t have me as best man this time around. I wonder what changed his mind to invite us.

So do I. There is one way you can get a better feel for it.

    Bruce looked puzzled. There is?

Well, it’s not a guaranteed way but a simple step in the right direction. You could thank him.

Well, I suppose I could, if I could get Jeff alone. He and Kenzie are rather inseparable right now. He let out a weak chuckle. But, maybe it doesn’t matter if I get Jeff alone or not. I may as well be upfront with both of them. Kenzie’s his wife now, and I should give her that respect as well.

Good idea. Actually, why don’t you and I go over together so we can thank them both?

Sounds good. He took a hold of her hand. Let’s go.

    *   *   *

Kenzie gently ran her fingertips through her husband’s hair. She mentally shook her head. This was something that she had never dared to dream of. Dating and relationships were strongly discouraged. And Kenzie had followed those rules without question. That is, until she accidentally met Jeff Dwyer and her whole ordered world was turned upside down.

Jeff turned and kissed her lips softly, then smiled lovingly at his wife.

Kenzie smiled back, then a curious expression crossed her face.

Jeff caught the look. What is it, honey? he asked, concerned.

Bruce and Aylin are coming over.

He turned around to see his older brother and sister-in-law heading over to them. He tensed a little as he stood up, feeling Kenzie next to him as she took his hand in hers. So they are, Jeff concurred. I wonder what they want.

Bruce and Aylin stopped in front of the couple. Nobody said anything for a few seconds.

Jeff, Bruce finally began after getting a nudge from Aylin. I know that we’ve had our differences over the years, especially this latest mess that I made, and I would’ve completely understood if you hadn’t invited us. But I’m glad that you did, and I just wanted to say thank you. He looked over at his brother’s new wife. Kenzie, you’ve married a great guy.

I know. I’m extremely lucky to have met him, Kenzie agreed.

I want to thank both of you too. We’re having a wonderful time, Aylin said.

You’re welcome, Jeff replied, then paused for a few moments. To be honest, I was hesitant about inviting you, but Kenzie reminded me that you are family and that it would please Mom and Pop if we invited you.

Bruce nodded. I understand, he replied, glancing over at their parents obviously enjoying the company of Kenzie’s parents, then looked back at Jeff. I think that you did please them. He paused again. Jeff, I’m hoping that someday I can make up for my mistakes to you—to both of you.

Kenzie looked at Bruce curiously. You’ve done nothing to me, Bruce, she told him.

No, not directly. But if I hurt Jeff even before the two of you ever met, it will have an effect, however small, on you.

Perhaps, but it’s not always wise to dwell on the past. Those things we cannot change. We can, however, learn from what we’ve done wrong and take steps to not make those same mistakes again, Kenzie explained.

Jeff smiled to himself. Kenzie sounded just like she did when she was explaining something to the boys, especially Aleck.

Bruce and I have both learned, Aylin admitted. I was also guilty of keeping secrets, and I too am sorry. I’m grateful that you are willing to put the past behind us. She held Bruce’s hand.

It’ll take time for me, but I know that Kenzie will talk sense into me if I lapse into old habits, Jeff stated.

Of course, Bruce replied. And Aylin will do the same with me.

    Fair enough.

After another moment or two, the brothers shook hands. Bruce led Aylin onto the dance floor while Jeff and Kenzie seated themselves.

    That was… unexpected, Jeff commented.

Yes, but hopefully good will come out it, Kenzie said.

Jeff merely nodded, then kissed his bride tenderly.

    *   *   *

The eldest child of Tanner and Carissa St. Clair, Natasha, sighed dreamily upon seeing her aunt and new uncle kiss tenderly.

Yuck! Maya said, her small nose scrunched up.

The auburn-haired sixteen-year-old looked over at Maya. What’s yuck? she wanted to know.

Maya motioned to Kenzie and Jeff kissing. Mushy stuff.

Natasha chuckled. Oh, you won’t think like that when you’re older.

    I’m in no hurry.

Me either, Zane agreed, adjusting his frameless glasses on his face.

It’ll happen before any of you will realize it. And then you’ll remember this day, Natasha told them.

We’ve got lots of other reasons to remember this day, Aleck chimed in.

Like what, Aleck? Macy asked curiously.

Well, I’ve never been to a wedding before and I didn’t know what to expect, but I’m having a great time! I mean, can you believe it? We’re in Hawaii! His bright blue eyes were wide with excitement.

Maui, more specifically, Aleck, Grant pointed out.

Aleck shot Grant a hard look, which Grant ignored.

Well, Aleck’s right. That’s pretty cool, Zane agreed.

Natasha took a sip of her soft drink. Didn’t Aunt Kenzie say that all of this was paid for by her former boss? she asked the others.

Yeah, and that’s even cooler! Zane agreed.

I wonder if he’s one of those men at that table over there, Aleck questioned, gesturing to the table that had all men at it.

Grant glanced over his shoulder, then looked back at the others. Probably. If you put out that much money for a wedding, reception, and everything that’s included for someone that used to work for you, you wouldn’t want to be left out, Grant explained.

Macy looked thoughtful. Should we thank him… even though we don’t know which one he is? she wanted to know.

Natasha looked at her sister. Now, why didn’t I think of that? I’m supposed to be the mature one here, she replied.

Grant cleared his throat. Ahem, he said.

Natasha blushed. Sorry, Grant. I meant among my siblings and me.

So… why don’t we? Aleck suggested.

The rest of the kids nodded in agreement and got up.

    *   *   *

Kenji Kashiro looked to see the group of kids head toward the table that he was at. He nudged Thomas Bentley, who looked at him curiously.

It appears that we’re going to be visited, Kenji said, nodding his head.

Thomas looked up to see that Kenji was indeed right. Yes. I wonder what’s on their minds, he mused.

Brady Thorpe also saw them. We won’t know until they talk to us, he commented.

The six young people arrived at the table.

Excuse us, Natasha began, feeling a bit nervous upon seeing six pairs of eyes fastened on her. But we were wondering… , she trailed off, unable to figure out how to tactfully state what she wanted to ask.

We just wanted to thank one of you for allowing all of us to come here for Aunt Kenzie’s wedding, Macy blurted out.

We just weren’t sure who to thank, Zane added.

Natasha sighed, wishing that she had Macy and Zane’s straightforwardness at times like these.

Mazen LeMack stood up, smiling at them. That would be me, and you’re all quite welcome, he replied.

Aunt Kenzie has the nicest boss! Macy gushed, hurrying around the table to hug Mazen. Thanks so much!

Mazen chuckled as he returned the hug. This action brought smiles to all the men’s faces at the table.

You’re welcome, but Kenzie no longer works for me. Her new job is to be a full-time wife and mother, Mazen replied.

Aleck tilted his head slightly to one side, considering Mazen’s words.

In any case, we just wanted to express our gratitude, Grant said.

I’m happy that you all are having a wonderful time, and enjoy this coming week as well, Mazen told them.

Thank you! all six young people said, then headed back to their table.

That was real nice, Ben commented.

    Indeed it was, Thomas agreed.

It shows how some kids are raised these days, Brady added.

The other men nodded. Mazen had seated himself by then, gazing after them, a thoughtful look on his face.

    *   *   *

Arnie Rogers and Wolfgang Walther both saw the looks that Mikos Grady was giving to Pippa Lamont. The husky Australian nudged Mikos to get his attention, then leaned close.

So, why don’t you ask her to dance, mate? Arnie whispered.

Mikos looked at Arnie, then shrugged. He looked over at Pippa. Um… excuse me, miss, he began, then continued when Pippa looked at him. Would you like to dance?

    Er… , Pippa began hesitantly.

Hey, go ahead, Lana said. Sounds like a great idea.

Pippa looked over the big Greek. No, thank you.

Some other time, maybe, Mikos replied, then to Arnie whispered, Well, that worked out really well, pal. His tone was sarcastic.

You usually don’t take no for an answer, Arnie whispered back.

"I don’t usually get no for an answer. But something tells me if I push, I’ll just piss her off."

Lana leaned over to Pippa and whispered, Are you crazy?

What do you mean? Pippa whispered back.

Why did you turn him down? He seems nice enough. Just one dance wouldn’t have hurt.

Look at him. He’s probably a bug clumsy oaf and will step all over my feet. Plus he seems the type that will let his hands roam where they shouldn’t roam.

Maybe so, but he could also be a gentleman. You’ll never know until you give him a chance. If he does do anything improper, you could always call him on it. But don’t assume the worse right off the bat, Lana explained, still whispering.

Pippa said nothing at first. Her violet eyes rested on Jeff and Kenzie. That should’ve been me. She gestured at the couple.

Lana rolled her eyes, leaning back in her chair. She looked at her boyfriend, Palmer Wagner, sitting on her other side. I give up.

She’s still holding a candle for Mr. Dwyer, eh? Palmer asked quietly.

    Yes. She’s hopeless.

Palmer leaned over Lana to speak to Pippa. C’mon, Pippa. Can you really see yourself as a stepmother?

    Well… , Pippa trailed off.

    Truthfully?

    Pippa sighed. No.

Because you know how much his sons mean to him, Lana added.

But four of them are grown and the youngest goes to an all-boys boarding school, she told them.

Where do his older sons live? Palmer wanted to know.

Pippa sighed. They live with him from what I understand. When I told him that they should live elsewhere so that he could date, he got quite angry and told me to mind my own business.

Well… he’s right, Pippa. They’re still a part of his life. You can’t change that, Lana pointed out.

Pippa sniffed. She’s just a gold digger. It won’t last. She stood up. I’ll be back. She made her way across the pavilion to side-by-side bungalows that were clearly marked as restrooms.

Mikos shook his head upon hearing the last comment from Pippa. He looked at Lana and Palmer. Kenzie doesn’t care about money. All I know is that she’s well-off, he told them.

Pippa doesn’t know what love really is, Lana stated as she looked over at Jeff and Kenzie. They’re so much in love. Why can’t she see that?

Mikos ran a hand over his neatly trimmed goatee. I think I can understand. It took me a while to get it myself.

Palmer leaned his forearms on the table. You mean that you were in love with Mrs. Dwyer? he wanted to know.

The big Greek cleared his throat. Well, ‘love’ isn’t exactly the word I’d use to describe it. But I was after her for years. She never gave me, or any other guy for that matter, a chance. Until she met him.

Lana scowled. Oh, you were after only one thing then, she surmised in a slightly hard tone.

    Never was one for commitments.

Then maybe Pippa was right when she turned you down. She was concerned that your intentions were less than honorable. I told her to give you a chance.

Mikos nodded. Well, not long ago, that might’ve been true. But I backed down when she said no rather than get pushy.

    Surprised me, Arnie put in.

    Me too, Wolfgang added.

So… one can change then, Palmer stated.

I believe that. It might take time, but one can.

I see, Lana said thoughtfully. But Pippa will live a very lonely life if she continues to carry a torch for a man who’s clearly not interested in her.

Wolfgang shrugged. Who knows? Maybe she’ll learn to get over him. Wolfgang looked meaningfully at Mikos.

I learned the hard way that the better man won Kenzie’s heart, Mikos stated.

‘Better’ is a term I’m not sure I agree with. He was better for her, certainly. But that doesn’t make him better than you or anyone else in general. We all have positive and negative points, Arnie explained.

Well, in any case, he won her heart. I learned the hard way that I should look at a woman with respect and not as a conquest.

Arnie looked at his best friend. So, no more shacking up with Shelias? he wanted to know.

Mikos shook his head. Nope. Learned my lesson with Ruby.

I won’t ask for the details on that. I apologize for doubting you. I hope Pippa reconsiders, Lana said.

It’s okay. I still have doubts myself. This is still new for me, Mikos told her.

Pippa returned to the table, seating herself.

Hey, everyone. I’m going to get a drink, Palmer told them. Anyone want anything?

The usual for me, honey, Lana replied.

    You got it, baby.

Club soda, please, Arnie told him.

A beer, please, Wolfgang replied. Want some help? He stood up.

Palmer grinned. Sure, that’ll be great, he answered.

Sangria with ice, please, Pippa told him.

    Mikos? Wolfgang asked.

    Bourbon, straight up, Mikos answered.

    Let’s go, then, Palmer said.

The two men headed to the bar.

Mikos suddenly stood up. I’ll be back, he told his friends.

Arnie looked puzzled. Where you headed, mate? he wanted to know.

Uh, something I have to do. I might not get the chance again.

    And what’s that?

Mikos gave Arnie a half grin. You’ll see. He walked away from the table.

    *   *   *

Kenzie seated herself next to her husband, letting out a little sigh of relief. Finally, I get to sit with you, Jeff, she commented, hugging him. Is all this dancing typical for a bride at her wedding?

Jeff chuckled. To a certain extent, honey, he replied. Of course, the more striking the bride is, the more she will be asked to dance.

    Hmm… maybe I should’ve chosen a plainer dress.

It’s not the dress. Jeff tapped her small nose. It’s the contents of the dress.

Oh… hmm. Not much I can do about that, is there?

    Not a thing.

Pardon me, a male voice said from behind them.

Jeff and Kenzie turned around to see Mikos standing there. With your permission, Mr. Dwyer, may I have this dance with Mrs. Dwyer? he asked politely.

The couple looked at each other in surprise, then back at Mikos.

I would understand, given my history, if you didn’t want to, Mikos went on. But I had to at least try.

It would be… impolite to turn you down, Mikos, Kenzie told him, then whispered in Jeff’s ear.

    Jeff nodded when Kenzie finished.

As long as you behave, Mikos, Jeff said with a slight smile on his face.

I always behave, Mikos replied. And even if I didn’t, your wife would make sure she let me know of her objection, this locale notwithstanding.

And as would I, Jeff added.

Mikos pointed to his jaw. I remember.

    Good.

Mikos walked Kenzie around to the dance floor while Jeff got up, heading across the pavilion.

    *   *   *

Lana looked aside at Pippa. So, are you going to sit there all night and be miserable? Lana wanted to know.

I am not miserable, Pippa answered.

Okay, you’re not. So, why did you turn that guy down?

Pippa brushed a few stray strands of her raven-colored hair out of her face. I know his type. They’re just after one thing.

Perhaps. But it was just for a dance. It didn’t mean anything else.

Oh, yes. That’s how it starts. Just a dance. But like I said earlier, their thoughts wander, then their hands wander.

And what if Mr. Dwyer asked you to dance?

Jeff Dwyer is a complete gentleman. And he’s married now, so I’d know he wouldn’t have any ulterior motives.

And how do you know that this guy isn’t a gentleman? He was trying to be polite. He looked a little hurt that you turned him down.

Pippa looked over to the dance floor to see Mikos and Kenzie dancing. Not so hurt that he couldn’t ask the bride to dance. See, they’re on the dance floor now.

Well, a lot of the men are going to ask Mrs. Dwyer to dance. She makes a gorgeous bride.

Pippa sighed heavily. And a lucky one too.

Did you ever consider that Mr. Dwyer may have preferred to do the chasing rather than being chased?

Oh, sure. But once that didn’t happen, I had a choice. I could give up, or I could try to take matters into my own hands. And I’ve never been one to give up, at least not easily.

Really? Never would’ve guessed, Lana said sarcastically. But you chased after him for almost five years. Didn’t you get the hint that he wasn’t interested?

I was hoping that he’d change his mind! It’s not like I had any better prospects. Pippa quickly blinked back the wetness that she felt forming.

Here we go! It was Palmer holding three drinks.

Wolfgang was behind him, also holding three drinks. He looked at Arnie curiously, not seeing Mikos. Arnie jerked his thumb in the direction of the dance floor. Wolfgang looked at the dance floor, seeing Mikos dancing with Kenzie. He nodded and seated himself next to Arnie.

Palmer also saw Mikos dancing with Kenzie. I thought I saw someone here asking the bride to dance while at the bar, he commented, sitting next to Lana.

    Yeah, whatever, Pippa said sourly.

And so Pippa sits miserable. Why? Because she’s not the new Mrs. Dwyer. Palmer was just starting to feel the effects of the two drinks that he already had.

Lana looked at Palmer, who grinned at her. She noticed that he now had a soft drink. She nodded, pleased.

Pippa looked around Lana at Palmer. Hey, like I said before, I’m not miserable. Why is everyone trying to get into my head? she wanted to know.

Palmer shrugged. Okay. Not miserable. How about pouty, then? he posed to her.

I’ll accept that if you both stop trying to analyze me.

Just calling them as I see ’em. Palmer slipped an arm around Lana’s shoulders.

Wolfgang and Arnie, although both were watching the couples on the floor, heard the exchange. Both allowed grins to cross their rugged faces.

Ms. Lamont, may I have this dance? a male voice asked.

Pippa jumped a little in her seat and turned to see that it was Jeff Dwyer standing there.

    Whaaa… ? Pippa squeaked out.

Palmer leaned close to Lana. Imagine that. All he had to do to make her speechless was to ask her to dance, he whispered.

Yeah. I wish that he had done that a couple of hours ago, Lana agreed. Palmer merely snickered.

Jeff sighed softly. Ms. Lamont, do you wish to dance or not? he repeated.

Lana nudged Pippa. Go ahead. You might not get another chance, she urged.

    Uh… sure, Pippa finally replied.

The couple watched Pippa and Jeff walk out to the dance floor and begin to dance.

I know that we just came back with the drinks, but do you want to dance? Palmer asked.

    Absolutely, handsome, Lana replied.

Then let’s show them all how it’s done!

As long as you don’t flip me into the air.

    I don’t flip. I dip.

    Good. Let’s go!

The couple got up and headed onto the dance floor.

Jeff glanced around to see where Kenzie and Mikos were on the dance floor and proceeded to gracefully dance Pippa and himself over next to them.

Switch! Jeff said to the other couple.

Jeff whirled Pippa over to Mikos. Surprised, Mikos released Kenzie to steady the spinning Pippa. Jeff swept Kenzie up in his arms and danced her across the floor, kissing her softly. Kenzie’s arms slipped around his neck, snuggling against him as they moved to the slow music.

Mikos immediately released Pippa. The two stood staring at each other.

I, uh, guess they couldn’t stay apart forever, huh? Mikos said with a nervous chuckle. Could I try again? Would you like to dance?

I suppose that one dance couldn’t hurt, Pippa conceded. But if you try anything… , she trailed off, seeing Mikos raise a hand up.

    I won’t. I promise.

    All right.

Mikos took Pippa in his arms, keeping a respectable amount of distance between them as they danced together. Pippa was surprised at how gracefully this big man danced.

Pippa Lamont, she said after several seconds ticked by.

Mikel Grady. Most people call me Mikos, he responded.

The two fell silent as they continued to dance.

From across the dance floor, Jeff looked over to see Mikos now dancing with Pippa. Hey, Kenz, they’re dancing, he observed. You planned it this way, didn’t you? He continued on when Kenzie didn’t respond. You didn’t just come up with the idea of getting them together when he asked you to dance and you whispered it to me on the spot. He gazed at his bride in realization. You wanted to get them together from the beginning. That’s the ‘experiment’ you mentioned when you said that I should invite Pippa to the wedding.

Kenzie smiled. Yes. Neither one got the one that they were pursuing, but perhaps they will find each other… with a little help, she told him.

And get both of them off our backs. Truly ingenious! Jeff chuckled, hugging her close.

At another section of the dance floor, Lana had a puzzled look on her face. What’s the temperature here? she asked.

Well, I’m warm all over dancing with you, Palmer replied. Why do you ask?

Because I think that hell just froze over. Look over there! Lana indicated to a couple dancing.

Palmer looked over and his jaw dropped open. Now, how the hell did that happen? I thought that he was dancing with Mrs. Dwyer and that Mr. Dwyer was dancing with Pippa.

I don’t know, but I’ll just bet it didn’t happen without some help.

Do you suppose that our newly wedded couple performed a miracle?

I would’ve sworn that it would take just that.

Palmer nodded. Yep. Whatever it was, let’s hope he keeps Pippa interested and her mind off Mr. Dwyer.

Tell you what. When we’re all back at the table, let’s not embarrass her. We won’t say anything more to her about this unless she says something first.

You take all the fun out of things, Palmer pouted.

    Palmer.

    Just kidding. All right.

    Good.

Hey, could you do me a favor? Can you reach into my right jacket pocket? Palmer asked.

Well, okay. But if anyone sees what I’m doing, Palmer… , she trailed off.

Palmer rolled his eyes. It’s my jacket, not my pants, Lana.

Oh, right. Lana chuckled weakly as she reached into Palmer’s jacket pocket to pull out an odd-shaped small box. What a funny-looking box.

    Open it.

Lana opened the box, then gasped, Oh my god!

    Palmer took the box and
