I always believed that I would write a book. Story-lines flashed through my mind even as a child walking home from grade school on a frigid winter afternoon. I remembered the beauty of a newly fallen snow and it triggered my imagination to create stories about the neighborhoods I passed. In no time, I’d be home having entertained myself all the way. My sister reminded me that instead of reading stories to her when I babysat, I would make up stories. She never forgot the one about a young dancer who yearned for red ballet slippers but her family had no money. I rarely recorded my stories. When I did jot down an intriguing few paragraphs, there was no follow through. I saved my notes and moved on to a new interest. Suzonne of Twin Flames did not allow that. Scenes and dialog filled my brain. When I didn’t write it down, it continued to repeat until I did. However, there was a time limit. If after many opportunities, I had to write it down or run the risk of loosing it. It may or may not repeat weeks later. I could be driving down a highway with this unrelenting story having a field day in my thoughts. There were times when I pulled over to write as much as possible on a scrap of paper that happened to be in the console. Eventually I kept a spiral notebook on the passenger seat. I learned to take it everywhere: waiting rooms, shopping, the beach. I never knew when I would be given a thought that had to be captured. Many times I wrote the chapters until the wee hours, 3 or 4 AM. The next day after reading what I had written I said, “I wrote that? It’s really good!”

Chapter 54:
Reversals And Corrections
Terrified to see his controller murdered, Derk slowly retreated. No one noticed him slink toward the wagon that had brought he and Ziya to the hanging. Derk always believed that Ziya was immortal. He had planned to do her bidding forever in order to receive the great wealth she promised him. He never challenged those things she deemed necessary for that wealth; not even the killing of his own wife. Ziya praised him for any deviant thought he held and she rewarded him for every vile act he performed for her or for his own amusement.
Derk’s fear began to subside watching Ziya’s corpse being dragged away. He calculated that his position as overseer was secure until something better came along. After all, there were no charges against him; nothing could be proven. Derk relaxed. He would merely continue to promote himself as the hard-working, respectable father of children whose sickly mother was never seen.
When awed voices rose in front of the manor’s entrance, Derk craned his neck and moved with the hundreds of other onlookers to investigate. He strained to hear their hushed words. Suzonne? Had that bitch finally died? No, it couldn’t be!
he gasped. He saw her being held up, looking sympathetic and near death, but alive! She appeared poised to speak!
Derk panicked; what had Suzonne remembered? He turned toward the wagon walking fast, then running. No one paid any attention to him. Everyone watched Suzonne. He jumped into the wagon and uncoiled his whip. He thought to flee to Fort Royal. If they chased him, he had the best team. Ziya had seen to that. He could out run any team here. Once in Fort Royal, he would hire onto a ship and leave this island.
A shot rang out! The crowd began to roar! Derk nervously glanced to see the reason. Women stood with fingers pointed at him, shouting, and their men were moving fast; coming for him!
Derk’s whip cracked over his team. The horses lurched and reared before they careened down the drive hitting and scraping other wagon’s wheels, causing sparks to flash. He quickly out-distanced the other wagons, all of which had to turn around before beginning their pursuit.
Suzonne observed the chaos. Raphael yelled at Jacques and Phillip who were already mounted, Stop the bastard! I’m just behind you,
before running into the barn to saddle his swiftest horse. The other men raced for their wagons, scrambling to be a part of the mob chasing Derk. Their shouts filled the noon air as they left in a clatter of horse hooves and billowing dust. Frantic women gathered in groups, uncertain what to do with their men gone off so suddenly. They tightly grasped their toddlers’ hands while clutching crying infants to their breasts, leaving the older children to cower underfoot.
Suzonne refused to return to her room until she saw Tumba freed. With the help of Milo and Lutesse, she crossed the property to Tumba and his woman.
The spectators watched Suzonne warmly smile and nod to Tumba’s woman before greeting Tumba. I’m thankful to see you alive. Had it not been for your heroic efforts, Derk would have easily killed me. I’m so sorry you have suffered for it.
Tumba’s eyes softened. You bad hurt an speak bout me. Mam’selle, save me too.
Suzonne turned to face the throng. Why has no one released this innocent man from his chains?
She saw old Solomon, Can you unlock Tumba’s chains?
Only mastah Raphael has the key, mam’selle ... I got big hammer.
If it will free Tumba, get it. Rafe may not be back so soon.
Old Solomon smiled, Mam’selle. I kin git Tumba out.
Jacques’s wife Louise, along with some of the other ladies questioned Suzonne’s wisdom. Are you being rash, Suzonne? In your frail state of health, why don’t you wait until the men return? We don’t know if they were able to apprehend Derk or if they believe him guilty.
Louise’s sister Anna added, You almost lost your life, Suzonne, someone must pay with his. It’s too soon to let Tumba go. What If you’re mistaken about Derk? We would feel in less danger if Raphael made the decision. These people are savages. Don’t forget that Tumba was not born here. He’s not forgotten the jungles of primitive Africa.
Suzonne trembled with weakness. Your ignorance astounds me, Anna. What are you insinuating? If Tumba wanted to hurt me, he had one hundred other opportunities.
Louise answered, We’re all quite shaken, Suzonne. You may not have been informed, but we witnessed a most gruesome murder a short time ago.
Suzonne stammered, M’ murder? What do you mean?
Tumba’s woman put a dagger through the head of that voodoo slave from Delisle.
Anna’s eight year old son blurted, The head flew off and when my papa picked it up the eyes moved!
What! Ziya is dead?
Suzonne looked at Rutah. Did you know?
Rutah feel evil blow way an Rutah hear Ziya power break like glass.
Suzonne’s gaze swept the expanse of her land in all four directions. She made eye contact with Tumba’s woman, Thank you. Your bravery has accomplished even more than you know.
To the crowd she said, "Do you realize the magnitude of what has taken place here today? Ziya
