About this ebook

Suzonne of Twin Flames Volume 6 Introduction: A Hint of the Story to Come

"I was born on the French island of Martinique a lover of the wind where the air has the scent of sugar and vanilla.  I am Suzonne Isabella Catherine La Fontaine and it is my honor to share with you the continuing saga of my youth and times."

In this Volume 6 of 7 series, Suzonne of Twin Flames, we find Suzonne choosing to fight an enemy more sinister than the pirate, more calculating than Sir Essex, an enemy who deviously tempts her with regard to Andre and above all, an enemy who knows her with the depth that Rutah knows her.

This is a story of good versus evil, and proof that we are never alone.

Should Suzonne and Rutah fail evil will be released beyond Twin Flames and the Delisle plantations.  It will consume the entire island.

Drums and more drums.  Old Solomon mounts a bell on Rutah's hut.  "You are to ring it when you need help," says Suzonne.

After an unnerving event Suzonne asks Rutah how Ziya is able to trick her.  Rutah gives an earth shattering reply.

Meanwhile, Raphael is drinking more, sleeping less, and seeing phantoms.

Correspondence from Camille reaches Suzonne.  She writes that every woman in Paris covets Andre.  The entire city prayed for him when they learned he had been abducted by pirates.

Rutah reveals something too gruesome to be true but she is proven correct.

Suzonne is sleeping fitfully.  Nightmares consume her.  When Rutah's bell rings Suzonne believes it might be another nightmare until her feet touch the cold tile floor.

With only a small oil lantern to light her way she plunges into the inky black corridor to the slave quarters.  She sees a tall dark shadowy figure hiding ahead.  Is it a trap?  Why hadn't she brought a weapon?

I always believed that I would write a book.  Story-lines flashed through my mind even as a child walking home from grade school on a frigid winter afternoon.  I remembered the beauty of a newly fallen snow and it triggered my imagination to create stories about the neighborhoods I passed.  In no time, I’d be home having entertained myself all the way. My sister reminded me that instead of reading stories to her when I babysat, I would make up stories.  She never forgot the one about a young dancer who yearned for red ballet slippers but her family had no money. I rarely recorded my stories.  When I did jot down an intriguing few paragraphs, there was no follow through.  I saved my notes and moved on to a new interest. Suzonne of Twin Flames did not allow that.  Scenes and dialog filled my brain. When I didn’t write it down, it continued to repeat until I did.  However, there was a time limit.  If after many opportunities, I had to write it down or run the risk of loosing it.  It may or may not repeat weeks later. I could be driving down a highway with this unrelenting story having a field day in my thoughts. There were times when I pulled over to write as much as possible on a scrap of paper that happened to be in the console.  Eventually I kept a spiral notebook on the passenger seat.  I learned to take it everywhere: waiting rooms, shopping, the beach.  I never knew when I would be given a thought that had to be captured. Many times I wrote the chapters until the wee hours, 3 or 4 AM.  The next day after reading what I had written I said, “I wrote that?  It’s really good!”

    Chapter 46:

    War Drums

M am’selle, Ziya come back.  What we do? wailed Fancy.

Mama taught me that the most reliable arsenal I have against evil is my trust in the saints and faith-filled prayer, Suzonne said with her finger pointed to the heavens.

Fancy flailed her arms.  You fight mambo with Sunday words?  We die, we all die!  She ran to Lutesse and Rutah.  Mam’selle got no magic.  Ziya come back for certain!  What we do?

Suzonne got on her knees, Mercy, mercy, mercy.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for Thou art with me ...

A dark shadow fell over her.  So great was its size, the sun’s rays were blocked.  She heard the beating of immense wings.  The hair on her head and arms raised pulled up by the powerful wings’ up-draft.  The enormous bird landed with a loud thud.  Suzonne’s blood chilled to ice.

She dared to look up and face it.  Its predatory eyes were red and unspeakably sinister.  The obsidian black hue of its feathers was not of this world.  Suzonne felt very small.  She remembered the Bible story of David and Goliath only she had no weapon!

The hawk, strongly resembling Ziya, strutted toward Suzonne.  It did not sound like her.  It spoke with a deep graveled masculine voice as if emanating from a deep well.  So, you know to get on your knees before me.  We begin correctly.

    Suzonne quickly stood.

Fancy could be heard whimpering a few feet away.

The hawk cooed, I delight in hearing my foes panic.  It is a forecast that my win is guaranteed.

Suzonne opened her arms to the sky.  I call forth St. Michael to deal with you.

The hawk took a step back.  You attempt to be someone you are not.  Your vulnerability deems it necessary to call others from the realm?  It is evident that you are ill-prepared.  It stepped forward.

Suzonne raised one arm to the sky with the other outstretched, to block him.  I request the presence of St. Michael!

Again, the hawk stepped back.  I have sent one of my most capable representatives to take this plantation.  All that Rutah has to fight on her behalf is you ... a weak, privileged girl with no knowledge of the dark craft?  This is barely worthy of my time.  You both insult and disgust me.  It snarled the words laced with condescending overtones.  I will not be disrespected!  It flew up to slash Suzonne’s face but her reflexes dodged a greater attack.  The enormous bird connected only with her forehead, causing a trickle of blood to zigzag down her cheek.  Then, instantly shooting upward, the creature blended into the sky.

The hawk flew through a grey cloud formation.  Suzonne shaded her eyes to watch.  She hoped to see the evil spirit fragment and disappear in the same way the lizard beings vanished.  The hawk made a loop and returned.  She saw that his talons, tipped with her blood, glimmered in the sun.

Little sparrow, you expect to have a chance to defeat me?  How amusing and pitiful you are.  Give up.  I have already destroyed Rutah.  You must know that I have won.  However, I am not totally without mercy.  Death can be swift or lengthy and torturous.  I will allow you to choose.  It laughed with a menacing staccato.

Suzonne began praying The Rosary out loud.  Hail Mary full of grace; the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now at the hour of our death.

The hawk did not come closer to Suzonne.  It went to terrorize the three huddled slaves.  Rutah is near death.  How that pleases me.  Unless you choose to follow Ziya, you all will die.

Suzonne walked toward them while she continued to say her Hail Marys.  The hawk became air borne, flying in the distance, then returning to sweep in closer to Suzonne.

Come little sparrow soar with me.  I will take you places others dream of.  Its voice reminded of her sugar mixed with shards of glass, sweet but deadly.  Oh, you are not able to power your thin sickly wings to my level; so be it.  You have chosen your role.  You are small and insignificant.  Allow me, the Grand One, my place.  Step aside before I carve you to death with my claws and crush those brittle bones into oblivion.  You have one minute to turn your back on this nothing of a piece of land.  Why did you reject me as Sir Essex?  I thought myself quite handsome.  One last thing, we had high hopes for you when you murdered the pirate.  Now we have become enemies and enemies must be vanquished.

The hawk flew as it had before soaring into the distance, circling and gaining speed then turning
