I always believed that I would write a book. Story-lines flashed through my mind even as a child walking home from grade school on a frigid winter afternoon. I remembered the beauty of a newly fallen snow and it triggered my imagination to create stories about the neighborhoods I passed. In no time, I’d be home having entertained myself all the way. My sister reminded me that instead of reading stories to her when I babysat, I would make up stories. She never forgot the one about a young dancer who yearned for red ballet slippers but her family had no money. I rarely recorded my stories. When I did jot down an intriguing few paragraphs, there was no follow through. I saved my notes and moved on to a new interest. Suzonne of Twin Flames did not allow that. Scenes and dialog filled my brain. When I didn’t write it down, it continued to repeat until I did. However, there was a time limit. If after many opportunities, I had to write it down or run the risk of loosing it. It may or may not repeat weeks later. I could be driving down a highway with this unrelenting story having a field day in my thoughts. There were times when I pulled over to write as much as possible on a scrap of paper that happened to be in the console. Eventually I kept a spiral notebook on the passenger seat. I learned to take it everywhere: waiting rooms, shopping, the beach. I never knew when I would be given a thought that had to be captured. Many times I wrote the chapters until the wee hours, 3 or 4 AM. The next day after reading what I had written I said, “I wrote that? It’s really good!”

Chapter 23:
Progress
Milo chose Fancy to be his new apprentice. She had much to learn. Today, a ravenous infestation of mosquitoes had taken over the dining area as a result of Fancy’s negligence. She had left the great manor doors open. Open only a crack, but with breakfast an hour away, it was a big problem.
Fancy, see what happens when your thinking is elsewhere? The Yaw Yaw are always in large numbers after a storm. That is why we empty the fountains, their breeding places. You must remember to close the doors tightly.
I sorry Messur Milo,
Fancy said rushing past him to assist her mother in the kitchen.
Milo swatted and chased the elusive flying pests with little success. His frustration greatly upset him. He stopped to rest and as he dabbed his brow, his eyes twinkled with merriment. He decided to mimic Rutah. Perhaps what she did could be done by anyone if they believed it possible. In truth, he had long fantasized about attempting Rutah’s sleight of hand with regard to the insect world. He saw no harm in trying just to see what might occur. He could have done so before now, but he did not wish to appear undignified. He protected his pride. After all, he had been a friend of Etienne’s, not a slave. Suzonne needed him.
This morning, he felt adventurous. He had the room to himself. He would never be any younger. Yes, this was his moment. He walked in a circle about the room and repeated his personal prayer, for certainly, he did not possess Rutah’s ancient words. He copied her moves as nearly as memory served. When the time felt right, he assumed an exaggerated stance. Legs apart, he held a candle snuffer for a wand and yelled, Yaw Yaw be gone!
Nothing happened.
He waited. He watched with great anticipation.
Still, nothing happened.
He twirled and pointed his wand in all directions and repeated Be gone!
Was it his imagination or were the mosquitoes still, not moving, suspended in mid air? Milo stared transfixed, unable to escape as they came toward him, en masse! He crouched, dropping the snuffer, he covered his head with his arms. When the attack did not come, he dared to peek out with one eye. The insects were inches away ...
What you do old man? Fight Yaw Yaw with no Rutah?
She stood at the top of the stairs having come from attending Andre.
Well, I thought to try
You seventh child of seventh child born to magic, Milo?
Milo sheepishly shrank from her.
Rutah descended the stairs, crossed the room and she opened the heavy entrance door. She pointed her gnarled, charmed wand used only for this very thing. She paused, said a quick incantation. With a nonchalant sweep, a wide circular arch, she added, Got no business inside people’s walls,
she scolded, You got all outside, BE GONE!
Milo and Rutah watched the mosquitoes form a migratory vee formation before they sped through the door with the precision of an arrow.
Milo, you get Yaw Yaw thinkin to leave. Rutah come shoo Yaw Yaw out.
She had no need to cause him to feel foolish. Rutah go. Got boy comin soon, fix bad tear.
How bad is it, Rutah?
Not know. Boy not tear yet.
She handed him a rough cloth pouch tied with a string. It held her herbal preparation for his arthritis.
Thank you, Rutah.
Once again, he stood amazed.
Milo thought how does a person know things before they occur? Yet even with Rutah’s immense talent, she became a slave. She must have sensed the coming evil. Her own countrymen kidnapping entire villages and selling free people into slavery to the European ships docked offshore.
Milo too had experienced slavery as well but he did not have the benefit of Rutah’s knowingness.
He asked her, Rutah, is it too bold of me to ask how you came to be a slave?
Rutah stopped short. Milo saw that she gave his question deep consideration. With a pained expression, she answered. "Evil men take Lutesse. Rutah look for sister nen Rutah get sold. See Lutesse in slave boat.
Milo asks, Did you use your power against the bad men?
"Rutah a child, not
